Eric Steinbach, club's "top priority"

In an article talking about the need to revamp the chaotic and riotous character issues in the Bengals locker-room, Chick Ludwig made a point to say about Eric Steinbach and renewed contract negotiations:

Look for contract talks between the Bengals and Eric Steinbach to heat up. Keeping the veteran left guard — who becomes a free agent in March — is the club's top priority. If Steinbach tests the open market, he's sure to visit Chicago and Cleveland.

Steinbach or Smith?

Suppose the Bengals only have enough money and cap space to sign one but not both, who should they take, Steinbach or Justin Smith? Are you worried more about the O-Line, or the D-Line?

I don't think bringing back Smith really adds to the better/worse argument on the defensive line. He comes back, and we're still stuck in a situation we were before the 2006 season... same crap, different season. If we're only allowed one big signing (per Hobson, I believe), then bringing Smith back in any form wouldn't improve a dang thing. It would be back to status quo.

Steinbach though? This guy, legitimately, could become a lineman legend in Cincinnati. Plus, it's harder to replace a guy that's an alternative to the pro bowl rather than a guy picked #4, yet never seen Hawaii before.

Just MHO.
