While the hit was not late, Ward clearly lines him up, dips his head before impact, and then rises into Rivers’ chin, using the hardest part of his uniform, his helmet, to slam into one of the most vulnerable areas of a football player, under the face mask.

The manner of impact may look like a coincidence, but look at the links below.  In each case, Hines Ward lowers his head, and then rises into the chin of an unsuspecting man.  .

Football is a violent game, but it is a game.  The repeated manner in which Ward blindsides players leads one to believe that he understands what will happen when he commits such an act, and if this is so, it is cowardly, unconscionable, and not in the spirit of the game.

A broken jaw and a concussion can have lifelong side effects.  Football is dangerous enough when played ethically, and Ward’s behavior can not stand.

Ward crossed a line – a line he has crossed many times before.

“The repeated manner in which Ward blindsides players leads one to believe that he understands what will happen when he commits such an act, and if this is so, it is cowardly, unconscionable, and not in the spirit of the game.”

I don’t recall any of those other hits linked being injuries. So I think that ward understands that “what will happen”historically is that defensive backs get laid out, not that their jaws get broken and are out for a year. It’s not like he is a perennial bone-breaker or anything.

He does like to hit viciously though. And I’d be wearing some pretty serious blinders if I didn’t think they were cheap and even sometimes dirty. As a steelers fan though they are fun to watch. Watching players get hurt is not though, and we’ve been watching ours go down one by one.

Maybe our two 1st rounders can get together and hang out. Mendenhall will have to carry the conversation though.

Ward needs a beatdown

Looks like there’s a bounty on Ward’s head. Can’t wait til’ someone cashes in. I’d like to see him be the first NFL player to have his entire head knocked off….literally.

>>>SUGGS SAYS THE RAVENS HAVE A BOUNTY ON WARD
Posted by Mike Florio (pft.com) on October 21, 2008, 5:45 p.m.

We alluded the other day to recent comments from Ravens linebacker/defensive end Terrell Suggs regarding the existence of a bounty on Steelers receiver Hines Ward.

Shaggy from 2 Live Stews has sent us the audio from Suggs’ appearance on the show and, indeed, Suggs declares that there’s a still-pending bounty on the MVP of Super Bowl XL.

Suggs said that the Ravens wanted to get Ward during the September 29 game between Baltimore and Pittsburgh, but that they couldn’t line him up during a live play.

The problem is Ward’s reputation for knocking the blocks off of unsuspecting defenders. "He does a little cheap shot," Suggs said. "It’s legal but it be cheap."

So what happens when the Steelers go to Baltimore?

"We’ve got something in store for him," Suggs said.

Suggs also admitted during the radio segment that the Ravens had a bounty on rookie running back Rashard Mendenhall, whose season was ended via a broken shoulder sustained against Baltimore.

But bounties are against the rules. So look for Suggs and the Ravens to hear from the league office about this one. At a minimum, stern warnings will be issued before these teams get together for a little Christmas cheer on December 16. <<<

I’m sure Mendenhall’s dance card is full. I’ve heard Kimo doesn’t have anything else going on…

Kevin from Orange Park, FL
What’s your reaction to Hines Ward breaking rookie LB Keith Rivers’ jaw? I, for one, think Hines Ward is a dirty player. Seems to me most games he purposely stirs up trouble and takes cheap hits.

Vic: I’ve watched the hit up close and in slow motion several times. I’ve even stopped the action at the point of impact. The block is clearly made with his right shoulder and there are no signs of using the helmet as a weapon. Ward’s feet are on the ground and he is in no way guilty of launching. At first I thought the block might be unnecessary but, on further review, it clearly springs the ball-carrier around the corner and denies Rivers the ability to make the tackle. Dirty? What’s dirty about it? There was no flag thrown. Fine him? They should pin a medal on him. In my time covering this game, I have seen head-hunting defensive backs try to cripple defenseless receivers. I saw Jack Tatum and George Atkinson target Lynn Swann; head-shot him repeatedly and even attack him from behind and karate chop him in the back of the neck. I saw Tatum cripple Daryl Stingley for life in a preseason game. I saw Thom Darden hit a receiver over the middle so hard I thought the guy was dead. I remember seeing Jaguars cornerback Dave Thomas crush Jerry Rice in a preseason game and celebrate as though it was the play that won the Super Bowl. In the preseason? How about the launch job on Anquan Boldin a few weeks ago? Well, finally, a wide receiver has come along who has decided to hit back. Ward is striking a blow for all the defenseless receivers over the years who’ve been targeted by defensive players with an intent to punish. All of a sudden, the hunters have become the hunted. I think everyone in the league is waiting to see what the league does about the Rivers hit. It’s going to define what the game has become and where it’s going.

Rivers should be embarrassed to have been blocked that way by a receiver.

I disagree. As can be seen on youtube, Ward clearly lowers his helmet during his approach, and rises into Rivers chin.

The consistent use of an upper-cutting helmet to the chin is what I have a problem with.
Ward could have leveled Rivers just as dramatically using the famous ‘arm shiver’ technique. This would have prevented Rivers from making the play, and probably put him out for a few series, but it wouldn’t have ended his season. I don’t think Ward was specifically trying to break Rivers’ jaw, but he knew that type of collision would cause a concussion, as was the case with Reed, and Holly.

Football is violent game, but it is a game. As we saw last year with Kevin Everett, collisions can get serous quickly when you have two athletes running into a helmet-to-helmet collision.

In a less violent collision, Polamalu received his 7th concussion. He’s expected to play this Sunday, but more than anyone, Steeler fans should appreciated the gravity of head injuries. A Pittsburgh neuropathogist, Bennet Omalu, has attributed deaths of former Steelers’ , like the great Mike Webster, and Terry Long and Justin Strzelczyk to brain trauma obtained during football.

With that knowledge, repeated head hunting on unsuspecting players, is not something that can be tolerated much less celebrated. I hope Polamalu doesn’t receive his 8th concussion in such a violent manner as did Rivers when some player is trying to even the score with the Steelers. That might push him over the edge.

Your analysis is just plain wrong. If the NFL saw what you think you saw, Ward would have been fined or suspended. No question. If you think Ward could block a linebacker with his arms you aren’t even worth arguing with

My analysis is sound.

Ward’s helmet is what broke Rivers’ chin, just as his helmet concussed Ed Reed, and Daven Holly. The technique is identical.

That type of hit can have life long repercussions.

Hines Ward is a good blocker, a ‘forearm shiver’ de-cleats Rivers, but doesn’t knock him out for the year.

Intentionally trying to injury a fellow player is not right.

This is useless

R.F., you are using too many big words for the idiot Steelers fan to understand. Just put it this way: Hines Ward = No Class.

HA ha

The bung-holes cant even win at smack talk. It must suck to be you! Crappy team, crappy uniforms, crappy ownership, crappy coaching, and a crappy fan ban. Just face it, Pittsburgh owns you on the field and your stadium off it. I know it hurts when u show up at a Steeler/Bengal game and theres more Steeler fan in the house than Bengal, u must feel sick. Hehe! When our wide receiver knocks out your best defender, that is just embarrassing! U suck. Lol! It must suck as well to know that you arent even the best football team in Cincinnati. You gotta take a backseat to the BEARCATS! You guys are a big joke!

Would ...

you please just go back to your Man-Boy Love web sites and stay away from here. You’re obviously not very smart and can’t discuss football without childish 4-letter words or some other ignorant rant. We’ll all match your welfare check if you’ll just go away. No one here wants to talk with you.
