Top ranked running backs for 2009 NFL draft
If Cedric Benson finishes the season with quality performances, then there's a chance that the Bengals could figure Benson in their future plans. On the other hand, I made the point that a weak free agency market could strengthen Benson's position for an inflated contract that may take the Bengals out of the running for his services in 2009. If that's the case, then the Bengals will be left with only Chris Perry and Kenny Watson under contract (aka, status quo).
That would mean the Bengals have to consider grabbing a running back at some point in the 2009 NFL Draft. I believe, easily, that the Bengals should go after offensive linemen in the first two rounds -- preferably a tackle and a center. However, for the sake of information, the National Football Post released their top-ten rankings for the NFL draft -- many underclassmen.

Depending on where we draft in the first round...
…the temptation to take a back is going to be very powerful. I hope they resist it. I would much rather see an offensive lineman, middle linebacker and center be our first three picks. We can grab a running back 4th round and possibly sign a journeyman for depth.

Benson
Despite a weak free agent market, Benson- should he prove himself the rest of the way this year, would probably still be cheaper than a first round back with signing bonus. That list that you put up yesterday of the backs available in free agency isn’t going to inspire any bidding wars and a first rounder is an unknown commodity. Much as I’d like to see Beanie Wells in stripes- though I don’t know if I’d really wish that on anyone while Mikey sits enthroned, someone like Oher or Eugene Monroe, maybe Terrence Cody if he comes out and is available- with a second first rounder obtained hopefully for either Chad or T.J. Half of those college backs would probably be available later.

addendum
not to be confused with pudendum, assuming we pick top three, it might be best to trade down if a good deal presents itself, and go with stud center, Alex Mack in the mid-first.
