Around SBN: Hugh Douglas Admits To Stealing From Jaguars

Ask Arrowhead Pride!

Dear Bengals fans,

Our community at Arrowhead Pride understands what a time tough the holidays can be, with our five combined wins and such. Losing is tough and we're not really used to it like you guys are so it's taking its toll. We hope Cincinnati and Kansas City can both get excited about this final game of the season. We'll be missing watching our teams lose come next week, even if we don't think so right now.

So, we're here to commiserate and answer any questions you may have about the Kansas City Chiefs and the upcoming game.

Fire away!

P.S. Kirkendall has already thrown up at post at Arrowhead Pride asking for questions. Head there to help if you get a minute. Thanks!

The first obvious question.

Is Herm Edwards sticking around?

Depends who you ask

One side says new GMs want their guy and Herm represents a liability to their overall plan for the team unless they’re positive he’s “the guy”. They’ll say he’s gone because of the awful defense, 2-23 record, etc. And they all have valid points.

The other side thinks he’ll stick around. Clark Hunt, our owner, apparently loves Herm. I could see him holding onto a bit of the loyalty his father possessed and keeping Herm around another year.

But, yeah, basically without a GM it’s all up in the air. I would say a good chunk of the fanbase wants him gone.

Herm is a better player friend than coach..There is no way the Chiefs (with their tradition/fans) should stink like this. All on Herm.

Offense

I haven’t seen a Chiefs game this year. But sometimes I hear it’s more spread oriented. How would you classify the offense? Is it pass dominated?

Blogger at CincyJungle.com -- SB Nation Cincinnati Bengals blog.

Absolutely

In the last game, which was -12 F windchill on the field, Thigpen threw 41 times, while rushing attempts only totaled 21, that includes Thigpens QB scrambles. The previous game against the Chargers was 29 PA, 31 RA. The game against the Broncos at Mile High was 32 PA, 18 RA. The Oakland game from week 13 saw 22 PA, 37 RA (11 of those coming from Thigpen).

Our offense is definitely more designed to throw. However, with Thigpen being a mobile QB ( some say he was recruited to be a TE at Coastal Carolina), he will run if he sees a lane. That pads the rushing attempts s little.

"In the NFL, coaching has to make a difference when the games are close. The talent level across the league from team to team is too similar. Great head coaches do their best work in the fourth quarter when the game is on the line. Instead, we’ve seen Herm blow timeouts, put the game in the hands of the league’s worst defense, and most recently, run Larry Johnson behind Wade Smith and Adrian Jones as if they were Tim Grunhard and Will Shields in their prime.
Dr. Frankenstein is gone, but his monster is still roaming the sideline at Arrowhead Stadium." -C.E. Wendler, Warpaint Illustrated

Draft

So does Thigpen negate any necessity of looking at a QB early in the 2009 draft? Or is that still a big possibility?

Still a big possibility

Thigpen hasn’t demonstrated that he’s an elite QB. Maybe he’ll turn into one, maybe he won’t. But that doesn’t mean we won’t continue to try to find our franchise guy.

Defense

The Bengals are second to worst in terms of rushing the quarterback, with the Chiefs being the worst. Is it a matter of talent or schemes that’s limited the Chiefs’ pass rush?

Well

Talent…maybe. In the last 3 drafts we’ve spent 1st round (DE Tamba Hali), 2nd round (DE Turk McBride), 3rd round (DT Tank Tyler) and 1st round (DT Glenn Dorsey). We WERE hoping those were our guys. But as of now, Dorsey is the only for sure keeper. Tyler will likely be back. Turk will be back because he was injured this year, but how long will he be here? It’s a combination of underachieving and the scheme.

Gunther Cunningham, our DC, likes to blitz and our HC Herm Edwards likes to sit back in the cover 2. 2 different philosophies that will ultimately land us in the NFL record books for fewest sacks in a season.

any chance

if we suit up fellow Chanticleer, Jerome Simpson, and put him out there on defense, that Thigpen involuntarily throws to him? Can this season be over soon enough? Any Chiefs fans want to donate their tix to the Lighthouse Youth Shelter and save the airfare- assuming any of them are actually planning such a fool’s errand?

by IgnatiusJReilly on Dec 25, 2008 8:09 PM EST reply actions

Good One

I forgot there were other Chanticleers out there. Our Thigpen is turning out pretty well given the expectations.

Draft

What position are the chiefs likely to target with there 1st round pick? Do you see them going after a OT, QB, or pass rusher?

by CincyMike56 on Dec 26, 2008 12:32 AM EST reply actions

DE

But this is a hotly debated topic at AP. Plenty of people are pushing for QB, RT, DE. And they all make excellent points. I think any of those 3 positions will address a major area of concern for the Chiefs.

Taking a RT that early seems like a reach to me, but on the other hand it would be nice to shore up our bookend tackles in 2 straight drafts.
