Reminder, with Andrews out, Dennis Roland will make his debut NFL start at right tackle. He made his NFL debut (I think), last week against the Browns.

Since the eight game losing streak.

The Bengals are 3-3-1. Could they actually finish with a winning record after the losing streak? Could the Bengals have actually developed into a “team” (not individuals, but as a team), in the past two months? Are we closer than we thought?

Or are we (mostly my dumbass), falling pray to the end-of-the-year improving record that means limited (if any) change.

:)

The fact is that this team made the playoffs in 2005.

True, it was an easy schedule, but a healthy Palmer and an improving defense could give something to cheer about in ‘09. However, knowing Mike Brown, he’ll let TJ go to the Ravens and keep a digruntled Ocho Cinco around to cancer-up the locker room…

If they went spread offense, like the Chiefs first two plays.

Nice job

On the third play of the drive, Thigpen hands off to Larry Johnson. Johnson deciding to not follow the guard (he really should have, the hole was there), stretches out to the right. Chinedum Ndukwe and Crocker were in on the tackle. Lost two yards.

Third and 12

Bengals bring 5-6 guys, and Thigpen (who ended up on the ground), throws the ball deep down the left sidelines. Actually, deep well into the sidelines. Incomplete and the Chiefs punt.

LOL!!!

Punt rolls from the 15 yard line. I mean, rolls very slowly. Chiefs player gets ahold of the ball at the 2-3 yard line and it squirts away from him into the endzone. Touchback. LOL.

Bengals lined up in five WR formation, and James in the slot, drops back for the quick hit and picks up seven yards.

Just once.

When Eric G. snaps it, I would love it if Fitzpatrick, instead of taking a knee, chucked the ball deep. Though the WRs (who I would assume is looking at the ball rather than listening to the snap) actually go into a route.

Carson explained this phenomenon as not having a firm play called...

since the Bengals call so many adjustments at the line, sometimes they literally do not have a play call in that situation.. THough, they could always have a “hot read” to go deep in that situation. Oh well.

Third and Five

After back-to-back runs for 4-5 yards. Fitzpatrick in shotgun, looks down the middle and throws a missile to the right. Glenn Holt can’t keep the ball in his hands, gets blown up, and drops the pass. Incomplete. Decent throw. Bengals go for it on fourth.

Not a bad drive.

Bengals rushed the ball five times for 35 yards (including 17 yards by Caldwell and 12 yards by Benson). Fitzpatrick completed a pass on a quick, high percentage pass to James Johnson. His last two incomplete passes were the result of Holt making a tough reception and a pass behind Holt on the second while Fitz was rolling out and throwing a “for the love of god, get there” pass.

we need a play maker

we have a lot of solid players, but we need that one guy that can rush the passer.
If we had someone like Merrimen, everyone else would look better

by R.F. Mehl on Dec 28, 2008 1:22 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

It will all hinge on those returning from injuries...

1) If Rivers and JJ develop into the players they were developing into prior to injury…
2) If Geathers and Odom can actually generate some rush off teh edge…
3) which, of course hinges on Sims/Peko/Shirley generating some up the middle pressure…

I have been impressed by David Jones, considering his name has been rarely called by announcers since the beginning of teh season. Crocker and Johnson have shown some ability too.

In sum, I think there is a chance.

We have to sign him.

If terms can’t be agreed upon (and face it, we’ve had problems signing guys), do we use the franchise tag on Benson? Seems odd to franchise a guy that didn’t even play a full season with the team. Then again, we franchised 9.5-sacks-allowed-Stacy Andrews.

by R.F. Mehl on Dec 28, 2008 1:57 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Exactly.

Obviously most people wanted him cut because of his contract, which seemed over-reaching later during his six-year deal. Speaking of which, when was the last time a player played through a six-year deal without an extension, or being cut?

But a minimal one-year deal? I mean, obviously someone of his age will check the market for another pay day so he can get good money before retirement.

Third and 13

Thigpen in shotgun, is chased by two blitzing defensive players. Thigpen rolls out right, finds Tony G., who picks up teh first down by going over Fletcher.

Looks like Ndukwe was looking to call a time out, but wasn’t granted.

Three minutes left in the quarter.

If the Bengals kill the third quarter clock, then…

- seven straight quarters without giving up a point.
- nine straight quarters without giving up a touchdown.
- only allowing 13 points in the past 11 quarters.

This defense, while by no means perfect, is starting to come together nicely. That last drive had a lot of different playmakers doing their part. It’s pretty cool to see.

Shutout information

Bengals have never recorded shutouts in back-to-back games.

The last time they recorded two shutouts in one season was 1975.

They have recorded 9 shutouts in franchise history — five coming in the 70s.

Over six minutes to go.

Pitch the shutout!

Yes, I’m fairly geeking at the prospect of two shutouts to end the season. I mean, sure, we’ve faced two terrible teams that made Bengals fans realize it could always be worse. Still, in the NFL, back-to-back shutouts? That’s still a great accomplishment.

BTW, to hit on JohnnyK's point earlier.

The Bengals, in the first half, went downs, FG, TD, FG, EoH — not a single punt, and two drives that went 10 plays or more, and three scoring drives of 63 yards or more.

Then, in the second half, the Bengals went, punt, punt, punt, FG (without picking up a first down). The first drive went 11 plays, 43 yards and then punt.

After that, not a single drive going for more than nine yards.
