Justin Smith and San Francisco working on a deal

Bengals.com writer, Geoff Hobson, got word that the San Francisco 49ers and Justin Smith "were working on the deal last night". That's far more along than what the Bengals have been able to accomplish even though we keep hearing that the door isn't shut. It is. It was closed the moment the franchise tag was placed on Stacy Andrews. Heck, it could have been closed well before that.

You're not reading Hobson are you.  Man, Hobson's articles are really hard to take. He write surupy little winnie the pooh type sports snipets too.

Sure Smith is gone but he's gone for a couple of reasons.  One question I have is why didn't they sign him over the past two seasons or why didn't he himself sign within the last 2 years?  I'm lost on that one.

Seems to me that if the guy wanted more money and was worth it then they would have likely inked a contract for the franchise amount that he got last year.  I also figure that unless he really wanted to be out of Cincy and knew a team that wanted him he probably should have signed for something somewhere near the franchise money that he got last year.  Go figure, huh!

My thought is that Smith is gone because he doesn't want to be in Cincy and also because, how do you earnestly try to sign a guy that fell off the 7 1/2 sacks per year average to only get two sacks plus also showing signs on the field that he's playing a little bit soft on some plays.

Is there a possibility that Smith was just putting in his time in Cincy.

Of course there's the down side where Smith sees that Cincy can't sign veterans like Steinback of the other group of people that signed elsewhere last year but they can sign an relative green tackle like Andrews for 7+ mil and sign a highly untested DE in Fanane to 4+ mil.  Sure you want an insurance policy in case the veterans are gone but how do you sign some of these people.

Nevertheless, Smith is gone.
