The 2008 NFL Draft is Here (Open Thread)
The draft is here and already Mark Curnutte suggests that the Bengals may overlook Rivers if Sedrick Ellis is gone. The Bengals could go in any direction if Ellis is gone. Let's talk draft.

Trade Down to #5
With media reports stating that the order of the draft will go, Long, Long, Ryan, McFadden and the Chiefs burning the phones with trade offers, do the Bengals move up to get Glen Dorsey?

#5
Glen Dorsey going to KC leaves Ellis left. Most of the players mocked are still available to the Bengals. Dorsey was an interesting fall to #5. But the likelihood of Dorsey falling to the Bengals was next to nil.

Who's next?
Rivers isn’t that high on the Bengals boards, as per Curnutte. Do we go RB Mendenhall? Perhaps G Brandon Albert? Do we go with CB McKelvin or DE Harvey?

Curnutte said...
The Bengals aren’t as high as others regarding Rivers.
And that the team may go McKelvin or Mendenhall.

Well...
Rivers is on the phone and the family is pumped. Looks like Keith Rivers.
I have to say this. I was TOTALLY right on the SB Nation Mock Draft.

Rivers it is
Its a good pick. It sucks that Ellis was gone, but we can still pick up a DT later. I like Rivers.

I think this is a safe pick more than anything.
Decent character guy, solid player, going to contribute right away.

Getting Rivers was like getting Hall last year. A safe pick to make the defense less bad. It’s a solid pick but I think they should have traded their 3rd to the Patriots to get Ellis.

Solid, Safe, but Good Pick
I’ve gotten over my initial disappointment that we didn’t go get Ellis. A potential Rivers, Thurman, Brooks LB corps has loads of potential. Still can’t believe that Jags gave up the farm for Derrick fricking Harvey- two thirds and a fourth. Now, if we can pick up a Sims or a Laws in two, I’ll feel better.
Looking at Kiper’s board, with like four or five OL guys ranked in a row behind the top six, I was getting worried about a Clady or an Albert first round….

Ravens go all Flacco
Please god, let the Eagles or the Redskins announce that wonderful trade for Chad and see what the Bengals can come up with at that spot. Hardy, Jackson, ...

Dallas is soon
Dallas will be on the clock soon again. They are the last team with a first round pick that’s publicly showed interested in Chad. Err. “a veteran wide receiver”.

Dallas traded up to 24 and took Mike Jenkins from S. Fla. Seattle took Lawrence Jackson at 28. Giants on the clock.

Now...
We’re in the second round. Any chance at a Chad Johnson trade is essentially gone—unless it includes next year’s draft.

WRs + RB
It’s presumed that the Bengals will go either DT, WR or RB in the second.
Donnie Avery and Devin Thomas. Gone. That leaves Limas Sneed, Desean Jackson, James Hardy, Malcolm Kelly, Jordy Nelson and Mario Manningham at WR.
RBs include Matt Forte, Ray Rice, Jamaal Charles and Kevin Smith.
Only three DTs are gone (Dorsey, Ellis, Balmer). That leaves Trevor Laws, Pat Sims and Marcus Harrison.

Hardy and Nelson gone- as is Eddie Royal. Sweed or Jackson but, please god, no Manningham. We’ve already rid ourselves of one Henry. A slightly different direction might be the highly ranked but undrafted Quentin Groves. That or Laws or Sims. I’ve actually heard that Laws isn’t that far off Ellis. So…

Hmm. Kelly, DeSean- as a return man as well, Groves or probably the biggest need, Laws.

Dizon down
We’re up. My head says “Trevor Laws” but my heart wants DeSean Jackson.

Jerome Simpson?
6-2, 200lbs. Coastal Carolina. Seems a bit of a stretch with both DeSean and Malcolm still available.

I second that.
He may be raw, but he looks like he has potential.

It’s freaking crazy. Nelson, Royal, and Simpson going before Sweed, Kelly, and Jackson. I could have seen skipping DT here if it were for one of the top wideouts on the board. And, nothing against Simpson, but he’d been projected more late third, early fourth. Potential, sure, but over the 6-5, 4.5 Sweed?

Me-Shawn is an idiot.
So the Chad soap opera is purely financial? Me-Shawn continues to be a lockerroom cancer even though he’s retired. I wish Steve Young had asked him how his mentorship of Duane Jarrett was going. Carolina cut his unproductive and over-paid ass last year – now that was about money!

RE:
I’m not sure if I like it, but I’m also not sure if any of the more known WRs brought a significant advantage over this guy. Just reading a little bit, it would seem that he’s just as talented as any WR in the entire draft, though he lacked exposure to make him well known. Not a bad pick. We expected WR early. So why not a good character guy (hate that term) that the team can really mold themselves.
In other words, I don’t have a problem with this pick—though I was really expecting DT.

This was our yearly first day offensive pick. I think Simpson is fine if you want a WR. He appears to be the most suited to replace Henry. Kelly has injury issues, and Jackson looks to much like Chatman.
I would have liked to see them go with Laws or Sims though.

But what about the giant Sweed?

Oh, and ye gods, man, now Pittsburgh has the tall Sweed and Mendenhall.

The Bengals need a good draft tomorrow
Baltimore and Pittsburgh got some good players on day 1; the Bengals better make sure they get what they need tomorrow. For the love of God, draft a DT that can actually play!!!!!!!!!!!!!

DT
I actually don’t see a problem not drafting one. Only one went in the second round and four in the draft as a whole. There’s two picks in the third round a decent pool of DTs. It took me some time, but I’m seeing optimism here.
