Shaun Alexander leaves without contract
What's interesting about the Shaun Alexander sweepstakes is that the two teams that have publicly expressed interest (Bengals and Saints), have two running backs coming off injury in Rudi Johnson and Deuce McAllister. The Bengals let Alexander on the plane without offering a deal while he concluded the visit was "a good visit". If Alexander were to sign with his home town team, then the Bengals would use him as a backup to Rudi Johnson and an "insurance policy" if (or should we say 'when') Chris Perry goes down for the season.
In related running backs news, Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis expects Chris Perry "to be on the field when the voluntary camps start May 13"

Back up?
It doesn’t really make sense for Alexander to be a back up for a couple of reasons:
1) I doubt he would be happy to ride the bench most of the season and would sign with a team if that were the case.
2) I don’t see the Bengals signing a guy like Alexander without having some role for him on the offense.
3) Both Johnson and Alexander are getting older and would benefit from having keeping the work load off of one back.
4) I would love a dual RB system of Johnson and Alexander!! I think they would both feed off the competition with each other and have more productive seasons than last year.

flashbacks
Every time I think of Alexander coming here, I flashback to another former Seattle athlete coming back to his hometown for too much money and sputtering through an injury-plagued, relatively nonproductive return. And Junior wasn’t even considered to be past his prime. If we sent him on his way, I think we dodged a bullet.
In other news, we picked up Travis Jones, a wideout from New Mexico, who’d been dropped already by the Seahawks.

The more I think about it...
the less likely I see a signing of Alexander. The Bengals have a lot of question marks at RB. Alexander would bring just another question mark. He is a short yardage back that can catch. Granted, I don’t think we can depend on Chris Perry, he’s made of glass and hasn’t played in two years. The odds of him making a significant contribution are minimal. If it turns out he’s up to speed, BONUS!, but I am not counting on it. I have higher hopes for Rudi Johnson and I think a Rudi/Kenny platoon might work out quite well. Throw some 3D in the mix, and I think we will be okay at RB.
