Bengals release Kenny Irons

In a somewhat unexpected move, the Bengals waived Kenny Irons after failing his physical on Friday in an effort to get the club's roster down to the maximum allowed 80 players. Irons hasn't taken a regular season snap this year and it's obvious that Irons' injury is so bad that the Bengals figured to let him go

Kenny Irons

Add this pick as another horrendous draft pick by the Marvin Administration. As soon as this pick was announced every Bengal fan belted out a loud “WTF?!” ...after a while though we all were led to believe how great of a pick it was. Wrong. It’s karma for making a dumb move if you ask me. Chris Perry was a horrible pick in ‘04 too. Same with him. Karma. Successful teams dont whiff on 1st and 2nd rounders over and over and over. I don’t want to hear about bad luck either. They were stupid moves to begin with.

Not How It Works

JCT, I dont think tha’ts how Karma works. In this case, Irons and Perry would have to be bad people and the injuries would be “pay back” for whatever misdeeds. I don’t think either are bad people. Now, if either of the Thug Twins, Thurman or Henry, had gotten hurt, that could be Karma. Personally, I don’t blame the Bengals for the Irons and Perry picks … in both cases the team was simply trying to fortify the runnung game, which next to having 5 great pass blocker is a QB’s best friend. And the last time the team was in a Super Bowl they had a Kenny Irons-type player named James Brooks.

Bad Luck

John, you don’t want to hear about bad luck but here it is. I don’t think a severe injury is the result of a bad choice. There’s no way to predict such a thing. Was David Pollack a bad choice? Of course not. Our defense and team as a whole would be better off with him. But he had a career ending injury. Whether or not Kenny Irons would have panned out to a successful career is debatable, since no one can predict the future (except for the Psychic Hotline). But what is not debatable is bad luck does not translate into bad draft picks, unless the player has a history of injury problems.

You’re right that many Bengals fans were scratching their heads when Irons was drafted. He was drafted after another typical awesome Rudi season. It appeared at the time that a RB was not what we needed. But the debate as to whether we needed Irons or not at that time, again misses the point. Bad luck has played its part with Irons and that is nothing Marvin could have foreseen.

On another note, the article linked mentions that the Bengals have resigned players later on, once they have cleared waivers. This may happen with Irons as well.

see ya, wouldn't want to be ya

It kind of makes NFL players bellyaching about contracts they signed and demanding buckets of upfront ducats understandable when they can bring you in, use you up, and send you packing. With Chris Perry’s inability to stay healthy, they speedy, shifty Irons was a natural selection to augment Rudi in the backfield.

As to the Karma thing, I’m pretty sure Mike Brown has a shitload of the bad kind on back order. Sorry to see Kenny go. He seemed like a really good guy in interviews and it seemed like he was working his ass off to come back from that knee.

Karma Clarification

Just so you know where I’m coming from:

I’m not suggesting that Irons or Perry are bad guys. Nor that they deserve the injuries, etc. I DO know what karma means. Maybe perhaps I incorrectly used the term. What I did mean was that I believe that both the Perry and Irons picks were bad picks (back when they were selected …and then obviously now). Aside from a decent ‘05, neither player has produced a lick for this team—so I feel it’s not really contestable to say either player was a good pick. (For the record, we can all count on ZERO from Perry this year, by the way.)

Anyways, in my mind what makes them both bad draft choices was the glaring need for help on the defensive side of the ball. You can’t tell me that the potential for a “James Brooks” type player was more of a pressing need than a linebacker or a D-Tackle last year. In the 2nd Round!! (And yes, I remember how great the Ickey-Jimmy Brooks combo was—and how it is en-vogue in the NFL to have a 1-2 punch at RB) In 2004, I remember Chris Gamble being on the board when the Bengals selected Perry. Anyone remember how great Rudi looked at that time coming off a solid 2nd half of ‘03?? ...and how pathetic the Cornerback situation was at that time?? (I’m not even arguing Gamble is that great of a player …just that he’d have been a better pick at that time if you ask me. And no, I’m not a Buckeye fan either)

You also cannot argue that fact that Benglas have 60%+ of their payroll tied up on the offensive side of the ball. I understand the “potential” either Perry and Irons could have brought to the table. My argument was that the offensive side of the ball was in relatively good shape at the time both players were picked—while the defense was (and still is) in shambles.

That’s what I meant. Maybe karma was a wrong choice in words. I think my point is well argues though.

Actually

I think an interesting point here is that with Irons waived (he’ll be back guys… seriously), that the Bengals weren’t hurt at all at the position. Which suggests his draft position was seriously over-estimated.

But I’m with you guys about Karma. That crap has been in Cincinnati sports, politics and social confrontations for a while now.

Mystifying

I actually found the Irons pick to be completely mystifying at the time, but then thought about how fragile Chris Perry seemed to be turning out, and the pick made some sense. That said, I agree, I’d have taken him, or a lesser back, later and gone defense there. I think they’re still trying to find that second guy who is lightning in a bottle that can get outside or turn the little dump off into a 45 yard play. Unfortunately every back that has that skill set has been and/or still is injured.
