Game 3

Well they say game 3 is the dress rehearsal so I hope to see some competence on display tonight. Is it me or does it just seem like other teams do stuff so much better? Man we botched plays like crazy this preseason. I’ll turn off the TV if the bengals start 3 and out. Here’s hoping the rookie receivers do well.

Chances at WR

With four of our main receivers down, the Bengals will have to dip deep into their pool. I’m actually somewhat interested in seeing Mario Urrutia, Maurice Purify and Clyde Logan.

Me too.

I’m especially interested in seeing Simpson catching balls from Carson.

You know if 1530 is going to be able to have any of the game on tonight?

by A Pragmatic Bengals Fan on Aug 23, 2008 7:08 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

1530

No, I don’t. Pre-season games aren’t supposed to be under any league-wide contract (it’s why local channels can carry games)… but if they do black them out, it might be some contract with digital radio. In truth, I just don’t know. I would have said yes, they carry it via the net. But they blocked out the second half on 1530 and all the game on 700.

OTOH, 1530 may have just switched programming not expecting big ratings in the second half of a pre-season game. So they may have it.

I know that’s the long-winded version of an answer. But I’ve never been known to keep it short. HEH.

Hee. You and I share that trait.

Even my abbreviated look at tonight’s game in the interest of timeliness ran a bit longer than I expected. lol

I’m listening to 1530 now, I’m just hoping they’re not going to cut away.

Agree about Perry

On your site, I agree absolutely about Chris Perry on your site. It’s a bit odd that we’re banking a lot on Perry’s success (and health) in 2008, but he’s clearly our best all-around back… and right now, our most explosive player.

Oddly enough, last year, we’re practically SHOCKED that the Bengals still haven’t released him. Now, using my powers of foretelling, if he has success and I’ll say 14 healthy games, Perry could be in line for an extension.

Thanks, man.

He is absolutely paramount to our success this year. No Perry=FAIL.

I'm a Stewart fan myself

And I’m DVR’ing the race for either much later tonight, or tomorrow. Love Bristol, but since they’ve repaved the track, kind of boring. You know?

Agreed.

Glad to hear that Stewart is going back to Chevy this year also. lol Being a Gordon fan it’s hard for me to get excited about Tony b/c of their rivalry, but I respect the crap out of the man as a driver. One of the best ever.

RE:

Just wish Stewart would finish out with a win or two. I don’t think anyone has a chance, provided Kyle Busch keeps going the way he’s going. Maybe with Newman in better equipment, he can rebound his career.

Yeah.

Still can’t believe they let Busch go and kept Mears over at Hendrick. I said it was a bad move last year. Now they’re letting Mears go for Mark Martin next year.

sigh

Hendricks...

Hellva an organization. Johnson will get his wins, but you have to wonder about Gordan. I keep hearing that he’s just not adjusting to the tires like other competitors.

Oh, and if you’re watching the race… then, shuuuuush. :)

Second and ten

Brees hits Colston, from the left wide out spot, running a quick slant. Hall was ALL OVER the receiver, then RIPPED the ball out. They called it complete, but a challenge could be warranted.

I wish the NFL would adopt the college system of challenges. Another ref, in the booth, that reviews every play in between plays, and then stops the game when…

1) the play should be reviewed further
2) apply any changes

It was kind of the combination of Hall and White. Hall jarred the ball loose (that’s my bad) and White smoked the WR. Sorry about that.

Third and 11... and then 16

Shotgun, 3 WR on the right… false start on Stacy Andrews.

Third and 16. Shotgun, deep pass down the middle and the ball is incomplete. The pass was a bit too long to Jerome Simpson. The DB (McKenzie), had a step on Simpson and nearly picked off the pass, but trapped on the ground.

Zampese must really want to stay in Cincinnati, he’s been offered OC jobs the past two offseasons. I wouldn’t want them to drag their feet and lose him.

Palmer

No, not at all. Poor line play + wide receiver scarcity = human Palmer.

Exactly what I was going to say.

I’m still putting it on Brat. Any OC worth his salt would be adjusting to sluggish routes by new WR’s. Or WR’s that have been around for a while and suck.

by A Pragmatic Bengals Fan on Aug 23, 2008 8:15 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Agreed

But isn’t that the excuse we use for middle of the line quarterbacks… guys that need everything else to work great? Isn’t the point of Palmer to make everyone else around him better?

The Bengals throw the ball to where the WR is supposed to be.

Unless Carson audibles out, which hasn’t worked well the last couple of years, he can’t do much.

by IgnatiusJReilly on Aug 23, 2008 8:16 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

add to my previous equation

poor O-line play + no wideouts + predictable playcalling = Carson asking to be traded.
Now, if the O-Line can’t block, throw to the sidelines.

Quick pass

To Chatman, nine yards. Good play call, to get the ball to the receiver and let them go. Utecht does the same.

Back-to-back quick hit passes. Good gains.

Quick slants and outs

might be the Bengals’ only hopes until Caldwell and Simpson are (healthy and) up to speed, or until TJ and Chad come back.

That is, unless TJ’s taken so much time off that his timing is screwed up too.

First and 10

Kevin Kaesviharn sacks Palmer. KK came in unblocked, from Palmer’s left and no one blocked him. Levi was on the end and there just wasn’t anyone available to block KK.

some one

needs to tell Marvin, Bratkowski, and the O-Line, that the punt is not the thing. That just because 4 is bigger than 3, it doesn’t mean that the down is a good goal.

by IgnatiusJReilly on Aug 23, 2008 8:23 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

That drive

Was better — though still in the suckage category. The Bengals did somewhat better on the line picking up the blitz (not putting the KK sack on the line). The team decided to move the ball with quick hits to Utecht and Chatman, etc…

Basics, we need to get back to basics.

It isn’t Deltha’s fault. The Saints are just getting too good a field possesion and the punter is able to give it plenty of height every time.
