Thursday morning links and notes
With the sixth selection of the 2009 NFL Draft, the Cincinnati Bengals select, Andre Smith, offensive tackle from Alabama.
Hue Jackson is getting some interest from the San Francisco 49ers to run their offense.
Chick is frustrated because the Bengals haven't made any moves yet.
Defensive tackles B.J. Raji and Ron Brace are impressing Senior Bowl coaches.
WDR made the possible connection that Andrew Whitworth working is with offensive tackles during the North's practice before the Senior Bowl, because the Bengals don't have scouts, relying on players to become the new scouts. Not that it matters, they're already predicting that the Bengals will blow the first pick in the draft.
Ethan Kilmer's contract details with the Miami Dolphins (for those remotely interested), is for two years worth $460,000 in 2009, and $545,000 in 2010.
The Baltimore Examiner suggests that the Ravens need a top-tier wide receiver. After T.J. Houshmandzadeh, the free agency market thins out.
Even after finishing 12th in the league on defense, apparently Bleacher Report suggests that the Bengals need to find a defense. Having the league's worth offense is apparently just fine.
What happens after injury.

I think Andre Smith would be a great pick. Other mocks have him going top 3 though.
Kiper has us taking Jason Smith an OT from Baylor who sounds like a slightly more talented version of Anthony Collins.
Other than Andre Smith, none of the top prospects have me excited.
Also, I have found the last series of posts interesting…

To sum up...
IF it’s possible for the Bengals to get Andre Smith, they’ll botch it.
IF it’s possible for the Bengals to get Hue Jackson, they’ll botch it.
IF it’s possible for the Bengals to re-sign Housh without crippliing themselves…IF it’s possible for them to get anything at all in return for Housh if he happens to leave, they’ll botch it.
IF the perfect player is staring the entire Queen City in the face from his perch atop the Draft Board, and all Mikey has to do is write his name on a piece of paper and hand it to The Chancellor in time…they’ll botch it.
…that about cover things? Good…see y’all tomorrow.

Kiper
I’m less and less impressed by Mel Jr.‘s wisdom as it pertains to drafts. First, he’s got Sanchez going 3 to KC. Not happening with Peoli at the helm- see Brady, Tom, Kassel, Matt. KC goes defense, which leads me to my second gripe: there’s not a chance in hell that Maybin goes over Orakpo- dude’s Jevon Kearse in the making. Next up; we take either Oher or Monroe before even considering Smith. He’s a talented kid but injury prone and a little light. Oher is already a pro and Monroe comes from a OL factory as the next D’Brickashaw Ferguson or Branden Albert. Maclin at 9? Moreno over Beanie? Harvin over both Haywood-Bey and Hakeem Nicks? Alex Mack ahead of the more versatile Max Unger? Though the last could prove beneficial for us in the second. Kiper Schmiper.

I've held for YEARS that Mel Kiper ought to be washing our CARS...
…instead of collecting paychecks for his blowhard pseudo-intellectualism masquerading as actual football knowledge.

RE:
Ever notice that a majority of his analysis is using key one-word descriptions? Player A is Fast, agile and strong. Well, who wouldn’t want that?!

rahi impresses everywhere
I like what he did at BC, but he’s not what the Bengals need.

Raji’s fellow BC DT- Ron Brace, isn’t it?- might be worth a later pick.
