Open Thread: Pick five free agents to re-sign

The following players are free agents. Your job is to pick five players that you would sign. Obviously, Houshmandzadeh would be a popular one, so really, we don't need to list him do we? My list goes Cedric Benson, Chris Crocker, Brandon Johnson, Rashad Jeanty and Houshmandzadeh. Stacy Andrews is a curious one, considering that he might sign a one-year deal to prove that his knee is repaired/healthy. Ryan Fitzpatrick is another, a backup quarterback that's played games in the same system.

Unrestricted Free Agent

  • Stacey Andrews
  • Cedric Benson
  • Darryl Blackstock
  • Chris Crocker
  • Ryan Fitzpatrick
  • Jamar Fletcher
  • Eric Ghiaciuc
  • Shayne Graham
  • T.J. Houshmandzadeh
  • John Thornton

Restricted Free Agent

  • John Busing
  • DeDe Dorsey
  • Glenn Holt
  • Rashad Jeanty
  • Brandon Johnson
  • Corey Mays

Exclusive Rights Free Agents

  • Daniel Coats
  • Orien Harris

What are your guy's five selections?

Irony

That two players weren’t even on the team when last season started. Does that mean we do better at accidentally finding talent as opposed to doing so purposefully?

RE:

What about a blind squirrel that had his business “handed” to him?

Yes, he left office two weeks ago.

1) T.J. Houshmandzadeh (obvious choice, cap him if needed)
2) Shayne Graham
3) Cedric Benson (need to draft a speed back to pair with him)
4) Brandon Johnson
5) Chris Crocker

4 and 5 are important young building blocks to our defense. Graham could be very important if our defense really does improve and our supposedly softer schedule puts us on bubble for a playoff spot (mmm that kool-aid tastes good). I would also like to see Jeanty back, I really like him against the run. I don’t want to resign Fitzpatrick or Stacy Andrews unless they agree to cheap 1 year contracts, if not then put them on a bus out of town along with Ghiaciuc and Perry.

Well I'll start with Ghiaciuc....

….just kidding!

My five aren’t too different than the others: Housh, Benson, Crocker, Graham, Brandon Johnson.

Some alternates if any of those don’t pan out would be:

Andrews – I agree with CincyMike that we could sign him to a cheap deal, due to his injury. Plus, I’m not entirely convinced that his departure would be addition by subtraction. After all, if he signs cheap, it would be great depth to the O-line.

Holt – I think he brings some excitement to special teams that we need. Last season he gave us great field position for the offense and could do the same in 2009. If he works on his ball security issues, I think he could be a cheap signing that would be an asset to the team.

Holt

I like him. But I think Caldwell replaces him both on depth, and as a returner. I think he’ll be the Tab Perry of this off-season. Just MHO.

Dorsey

Not a bad selection, IMHO. We’ll have Watson and Chris Perry (cry loudly friends!!!) while Cedric and DeDe are free agents (UFA and RFA respectively).

John Thornton

Now that his contract is over, and his cap hit would be much friendlier if the Bengals re-signed him to a 1-2 years deal, do you sign him?

Depends on the price.

One thing the bengals need to be worried about is depth at each position. As last season shows, the great teams are solid at both the starters and backups.

Without Thorton the Bengals have Peko, Sims, and Shirley. As far as starters go, maybe the bengals are ok with those three competing for a starting position. However, Thorton is a great lockerroom influence and team leader. We saw what happened when Willy Anderson was cut (granted we don’t know how much of the O-line’s failure was due to a lack of a leader like Anderson).

So, depending on how much we can sign him for, he could still be an asset to Cincinnati.

Plus he's refiring his BengalsCentral blog up.

Maybe he knows something we don’t.

Plus he gave me a shout out!

Brandon Johnson
Darryl Blackstock
Chris Crocker
Cedric Benson
Eric Ghiaciuc*

  • assuming we make the glaringly obvious move and draft a center- Mack, Unger, Luigs, Caldwell, the kid from Louisville who’s name I forget- we’ll still need Ghiaciuc as a transition and, hopefully, as a backup. Pardon my French but fuck Shane Graham. Kickers are a dime a dozen and, if we can’t stick the ball in the end zone regularly enough to win, we’ve got bigger problems anyway.

Franchise TJ for this year- hope that doesn’t count as one of my five. I’d rather stick with Jordan Palmer as back-up. I think the arm is genetic- if not the accuracy. Dorsey has become a Chris Perry on a lesser scale- flashes of greatness followed by one injury after another. I’d trade Andrews if we could get anything for him. Otherwise, let him go for whatever compensatory pick we might get(hell, the same goes for Chad). Thornton would be alright at a discount for his locker room calm. I would like to keep Jeanty, so maybe I would switch his name for Blackstock’s on my list. Fletcher, I had mixed up with Quentin Jammer when we picked him up. Reality set in. Bye-bye to him and Busing. Holt fumbles and Caldwell has probably already supplanted him anyway.

RE:

For the past ten minutes, I’ve been wiping away the screen on my laptop. For some reason “Eric Ghiaciuc” is covering up your fifth player. Won’t. Come. Off… Must. Use. C. 4. Titanium alloy casing will be tested.

I agree with franchising TJ, but kickers like shane graham are nothing near a dime a dozen. He is one one of the most accurate kickers in the game and I’m not sold on the “not clutch” tag just yet. If our defense continues to develop it would be huge to have him to grind out games if we have too. It would fit with Marvin’s hinting that we will be more rush oriented next year.

Other than Ghiaciuc (wtf?) I like your list, especially when you switch jeanty with blackstock like you noted

Zero

How about not a single one? We have not won with them so why resign them? How about we try to sign one of those Raven linebackers and some players from good nfl teams???? But if I had to only choose one it would be crocker. That guy plays with a fire in his ass.

I'll do it

if they need someone to show them the door I’ll be more then happy to do it

by Diesel2405 on Jan 27, 2009 10:14 PM EST reply actions

1. TJ
2. Benson
3. Crocker
4. B. Johnson
5. Jeanty

+whomever else we sign to with the money we get from cutting Levi Jones, Chris Perry, and Dexter Jackson.
S. Graham missed the kick to beat the Steelers 2 years ago, and this year to be the Eagles. We need better.
