The Bengals are shutting down "#1" receivers.
In five games this season the Bengals are not allowing an opponents' best receiver to beat them. In fact in three instances they shutout a couple of the biggest names in the league. Of course they have been helped by a couple dropped passes, at least one each by Jennings and Edwards, and several by Marshall but this is still impressive.
Week 1 Brandon Marshall 4 receptions 27 yards
Week 2 Greg Jennings SHUTOUT
Week 3 Santonio Holmes 1 reception 18 yards
Week 4 Braylon Edwards SHUTOUT
Week 5 Derrick Mason SHUTOUT
What are the main reasons for this current trend? (And yes, I think five games is enough to call it a trend) First might be the pressure we are applying to the quarterback. After only 17 sacks last year its apparent this team can make the signal caller a little uneasy in the pocket as displayed by the Bengals 14 sacks through 5 five games. Leon Hall, Johnathan Joseph and even Chris Crocker have all been tight in coverage and are making plays when the ball is in the air. Finally with all the attention paid to the number 1, the number two, slot or TE has been left virtually uncovered at times.
Now the biggest test of the year approaches, and logic tells us this week against Houston Andre Johnson will catch some passes right? Well with this defense you never know. Let me know how you think he'll fair in my poll.

andre will kill us
He plays alot of the slot, so he should have a solid day against us. He will line up against Crocker or M.Trent

Very True But..
Good post! I’ve noticed too that we’ve shut down the number 1 guy literally every game this year as well. But…
Keep in mind that Donald Driver (99yds 1 td), Mike Wallace (102yds), and Mohammed Massaquai (148 yds) all had big games. Meaning that Leon Hall has been beast (assuming he’s primarily responsible)! and the rest of the secondary has, at times, been boom or bust.
But overall, our secondary has been playing… great, especially against Baltimore!

joseph has played well too
Driver plays the slot, so that was Crocker’s fault
and i think the lack of tape on Wallace and Massaquai contributed to their big days. I doubt it happens again

He’ll be the guy we have to focus on against Houston. Obviously Andre Johnson will get his, but if we can get to Schaub and keep the Walters from touching the ball, then we’ll have a good shot at winning this game
This is our year!

Andre Johnson is not simply a number 1 receiver....

Voideo aside, the key is pressure on Schaub. You can’t “cover” a guy like AJ. He is strong to rip the ball away from double teams. The key is pressure Schaub, thats how you take Aj out of the game.

What about Revis he shut Johnson down
So he can be beaten, or was it the pressure during that game?

Our O-Line shut down AJ against the Jets.
Schaub makes poor choices under pressure and Rex Ryan had people in his face every play. Revis is good. Very good in fact. but not good enough to cover AJ for longer than a short time. but the ball had to be thrown within a couple seconds most of the time due to the insane blitzes and our lackluster o-line play. You guys can win this game if you get CONSISTENT pressure. if you get 10 sacks but dont get in his face other than those times, Schaub will torch anyone. so just keep the gas down and you win.
Looking forward to not having an 8-8 year!
