Hit Me: Questions About The Houston Texans?
Howdy, Cincy Jungle. I'm Tim from Battle Red Blog, the SB Nation blog for all things Houston Texans. As our respective squads are set to tangle on Sunday, I figured I'd head on over to these parts to see if you had any questions I could answer. Kirkendall's been kind enough to do the same over at BRB.
So hit me, CJ. Wondering what I think about the Texans' inconsistent performance thus far? I'll wax poetic. Want to know what's up with Steve Slaton? I'll babble incoherently. Dying to read what I think about Houston's run defense? I'll laugh, then cry, then laugh, then cry some more, and then maybe answer.
Best of luck on Sunday as the Bengals continue their resurgent 2009 campaign. Well, I'm actually hoping you guys hit a speed bump, but you get the idea.

I guess I'll ask a question
So far this year it looks like the Texans are getting blown off the ball in both trenches, and now with an injury to the O-line, the Texans might find their pass protection and run blocking taking a further hit. What do you think the Texans will do to cover these weaknesses or smooth them out?

Re: OL
Gonna be VERY interesting to see how Antoine Caldwell and/or Chris White do at RG (White also got snaps at LG in a rotation with Kasey Studdard last week as well). Overall, the pass-blocking, even with the infusion of new players on the line, has been tremendous. The offensive line was struggling with run-blocking before the injuries to Pitts and Brisiel, so it figures to be even worse now.
Depending on what kind of pressure your boys bring, I’m guessing you’ll see a lot of quick routes by Owen Daniels, Kevin Walter, and David Anderson to keep Schaub upright. The running game…well, I’m not holding my breath. It hasn’t looked good all season. At this point, I’m hoping Kubes has been watching tapes of Brian Westbrook all week and figuring out a way to make Slaton a bigger part of the passing game.

How do you stay sober...
when the Texans play like they have after having such high pre-season expectations?
I suppose if all of the stars, moons and planets align it could be possible, but what are the chances of that?

Will Andre Johnson break the Bengals' streak of shutting down #1s?
Why?

Re: 'Dre
I’m betting yes, but that’s more a testament to Andre Johnson’s awesomeness and perhaps my own bias. Darrelle Revis shut ‘Dre down, but he’s really been the only CB to have done it this year. I don’t count the win over Oakland because the Texans went into a prevent offense in the second half.

Not knocking Revis at all
but i really think his success has come from Quarterback pressure. Passes are being delivered his way hastily and without ideal accuracy. He’s an exceptional player, but is NOT another Asomugha. Speaking of which, Kubiak simply refused to chance throwing it at the BEST WR in the NFL when Andre’s biggest games have come when Schaub throws it his way with trust as the decision maker. Kubiak simply didn’t give andre a chance out of caution.
Looking forward to not having an 8-8 year!

how is your d line playing?
i know you have mario, but it seems like he’s been nonexistent this year.

Re: D-line
Mario has been a disruptive force, as expected. He’s usually at, around, or on the quarterback by the time the play is up. For some reason though the sack numbers just haven’t been there. It’ll come. As for the others…
Amobi Okoye, who had a non-existent (when I say that, I mean it, there was maybe one play the entire year where we can say he played up to his level, though to his credit he was playing through injury) year last year, showed up in the Raiders game (though maybe that was more a product of the Raiders showing up in Houston) and has found his way to the backfield a few times here and there, but for the most part he’s still far too inconsistent.
Antonio Smith, our “marquee” free agent signing, has been playing eerily similar to Anthony Weaver, the man who he was supposed to play. That is to say, not at all. He, like others, was a force against the Raiders, but again, that means little to nothing. Wasn’t able to catch the Arizona game so I can’t say anything past that.
Our tackles opposite Okoye.. well, I can’t say anything about them. It would be saying too much about them.
As a group, they’ve been about as good as the entire defense. For the most part, shitty. There have been tiny stretches in a few games where they’ve looked capable, but needless to say, your offense has nothing to fear when they stare down at Mario and… “the other guys”.

Mario can’t do it alone. Under-performing D-line – trust me, Bengals fans feel your pain. It was our pain until this year (and maybe the end of last).

After Steve Slaton... who?
He doesn’t really seem like an everydown back, but neither your O-Line or your RB depth strike much fear in me. For that matter, neither does the pass rush. Can your running game step up against the resurgent bengal D-line, and can they protect the passer from the league’s SACK LEADER!?
by Yaccub Fleishcman on Oct 15, 2009 1:37 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Re: Slaton
After Steve Slaton, it’s Ryan Moats, who has looked good in limited action this year. For reasons unbeknownst to me, he didn’t sniff the field last week. Chris Brown is miscast as a goal line back and doesn’t really figure into the game plan.
The OL has been very good protecting Schaub and not nearly as good run-blocking. That said, we’ve lost our two starting guards for the season, and our center has historically been abused by big DTs, so it’s not like they’re invulnerable.
The pass rush has not been good. Our new DC has tried to be more aggressive and blitzes far more than his predecessor; watch for Cushing and Ryans to come after Palmer. Super Mario has been Super Mario, and Okoye has looked better, but Antonio Smith and the rest of the DL have been underwhelming. One guy to watch when he’s in—Tim Bulman. Dude’s got a motor.
If I was a betting man, I would not bet on the HOU running game getting well this week. I do, however, believe the OL will do a decent job protecting Schaub.

re:beatdown
i would think w/your recent history, trash talking would be a little premature/immature. If we were in your shoes, I think we would ever be so greatful to have things going right for us, that it would be beneath us to talk smack to an obviously talented, but somewhat underperforming team…just saying.

I'll apologize
You need to understand that some of our fans are having trouble knowing how to adjust to this winning thing. Especially winning streaks. And especially when people start talking about games we’re SUPPOSED to win. That’s just nuts. The bengals as favorites?
But I think the texans are talente and have every chance at putting together a monster game. Just hope it’s not this week.

The Bengals are playing well this year. This will be a good game. If the Texans show up for two halves, we will win, hands down. If they do the one half of football thing we will lose.
I am glad to see the Bengals playing so well though. I have friends up there and after 239874328979579 years of being downtrodden, it’s nice to here them talking smack and meaning it finally.
In my opinion, the better EVERY team plays in the NFL, the better the league and the more fun to watch.

Texans fans
a: I followed the Titans for a couple of years, and felt like a man w/a conscience cheating on his spouse. It was hard going cold turkey, I had been a fan since before Luv YA Blue.
b. I read LA papers online praying that they would spit the bit, and we would get the team instead of them. Funny, not many of my prayers work out, but this one did. Hey, they acquitted OJ, so it should have been a given that they would screw this up.
c. Why Houston has fans…you might not know this, but Houston is somewhat of a large town. Maybe even bigger than Cincy. Seriously, Texans are rabid about football, this town treated the Oilers awesomely until Bud stabbed us in the back. This without even one Super Bowl appearance.
d. I don’t hate the Cowboys, but I hate Jerry Jones, and Cowboy fans….so obnoxious. A perfect weekend is a Cowboys loss and a Texans win.

I really like your QB
But it seems like he gets injured a lot, or gets out of the groove often. Is it his fault or just heat from the defense. Sometimes it looks like he gets happy feet, but that might have just been the game I saw, I don’t get to see Texans much.
I would trade you Ocho and Coles for Johnson….he is an amazing athelete.

His biggest injuries have come on illegal shots...
Both of which resulted in the league fining the players who delivered the cheap hits.
Matt is actually not injury prone when Jared Allen isn’t trying to kneecap him.

Re: Trade
Thanks for the offer, but I imagine we’d pass on a Chad Johnson/Laverneous Coles for Andre Johnson trade.
Schaub’s a good, sometimes very good, QB. Although you can count on a TO from him almost every game, he’s also becoming awfully automatic at 2-3 TDs per game in this offense. We’ll take that ratio.

Thanks for saying that..
…he gets injured a lot instead of saying injury prone because there is a big difference and i’d rather not get into that conversation. P.S. Fuck Jared Allen.
Anyways…
Teh Schaub is a good QB. Although it takes him a quarter or two to get going. But when he gets going, you do not want to be playing against him (Especially in FF) He’s definitely our QB for the next 3-4 years.

Mario Williams vs. Andrew Whitworth/Anthony Colins?
I can see the Texans moving Mario around the D-line looking for favorable matchups. Do you think he has a chance to get penetration going up against our tackles?

He usually flips sides of the line depending on whether its a passing or rushing situation. Remember, the guy is like 6’7 290.

I expect Mario will have a big second half...
His quickness really becomes an issue later in the game when those big tackles start to tire.
