Bengals refused 2010 1st round pick for Rey Rey????
Hey Kirk? Here's a research project for ya. I just read an intriguing passage on the Houston Chronicle.
Let me be clear, I would rather have Rey Maualuga than ....well, anything/anybody. He was far and away my favorite player 1-nano-second after I heard these famous words: "with the 38th selection, the Cincinnati Bengals select, Rey Maualuga, linebacker from Southern California."
In other words, I'm verrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrry happy the Bengals drafted the almighty StingRey and refused the 1st round pick offers. Despite my excessive research of everything Rey Rey for the past half-year, I never knew the Bengals were made such an offer. While this could be bogus, I found it interesting.
Thanks for the non-stop info cincyjungle, couldn't make it through the day without ya.

Good Call
Rey was basically 1st round talent in the 2nd round. We also know he fits in well enough so less chance for a bust. The only reason to take the pick would be if it was a high pick with some type of rookie salary cap that year.
It would have been silly to trade him
We would have taken him mid first round if we traded down and got him at a second round price.

yep, we definitely won on that pick. of course, i said that about odell thurman in 2005. okay, if rey makes it through two seasons without incident, i’ll celebrate. right now, i’m just enjoying it while the bengals fan in me waits for the other shoe to drop.
i'm going to go america all over your ass!
speaking of Thurman
I’m just waiting for him to get some time in before he comes back into the NFL. Wouldn’t that be something if ole Mikey Boy decides to bring him back! Rey Rey, Rivers, and Thurman assuming that he’s on the right path and can play the way he did in the past. Just a wild and crazy long shot thought. We would be beast-in at the LB position.
Regardless of whether or not this turned out well...
The 2010 class is stacked all around, and not taking the pick was silly depending on who was offering it (ie we wouldnt take it from Pitt obviously). If you don’t believe me look at some scouting reports on players projected to go in the first round. Almost all of them are defensive players or quarterbacks. Worst case scenario we trade down next year and take multiple picks for our first round picks a la New England Patriots.
We did it for money reasons if I had to guess.
Rey Maualuga is a STUD.
