Slim's last season as a Bengal?

Yea its probably Chris Henry's last season as a Cincinnati Bengal,  I think that Jerome Simpson will replace Slim as the number 4 receiver after this season. I would rather keep Chris but from all the conversations I have had with John Thornton he seems to think that Slim will be gone as well. Jerome has talent but is he ready? I think we should Franchise Chris next year, who would you franchise? We all know how "fond" Mike Brown is of Chris Henry, but I think the only way he is around for another season is if he is franchised. Think about it, Chad and Coles are both in their thirties and nearing the end of their carreer and Slim could be a great replacement for them, But i just have that feeling that he will be gone and thrive in another franchise. He should be a Bengal for the rest of his career in my opinion, Do you think we should let a great receiver like slim get away? I would like to hear what you think, should we Franchise him? Give him a nice contract? or let him go?

I think he is a....

restricted free agent so we could keep him for pretty cheap next year as well. I would like to see him be at least the 3’rd wideout if he is here. Wish on 3’rd and longs that every once in awhile we would go more 4 wide and get Coats/Foschi out of the game. I hope he stays and develops to that 50 catch 850 yard 8 TD guy in the 2nd/3rd wide role….Simpson, ughhhhhhh. He has one catch for one yard and got hurt on that one catch last year if I remember correctly. I saw a Joe Reedy column that says that he is still struggling mightly and thinks he will be cut next year. That pick will always get me mad because we should’ve had Deshawn Jackson. Ridiculous.

I thought that too...

…but I’m pretty sure this is the end of his fifth year which makes him unrestricted if understand free agency correctly.

Not in an uncapped year

In a year with no salary cap, you’ve got to have six years in the league.

Release Coles if Simpson is developing well....

Here's what you do

Release Coles and promote Henry to #2- Keep Caldwell in the slot. We can’t really speculate on Simpson since we haven’t seen him play- the coaches will make the right decision with him. In my opinion, Simpson or Coles needs to go. We need to keep Slim badly. Him and Andre are the future at the WR position.

Two words for you people...

Dez Bryant, forget about Simpson and play it by ear regarding Slim Shady for the next couple of months.

Doubtful Bryant will fall to us considering we’ll be Super Bowl champs, but if he does, damn Mike Brown if we don’t pick him.

If you don't live like you wanna, you live like you shouldn't

Next year we have chad and henry starting. Caldwell is good in the slot so keep him at #3. Cut coles! I think he is getting paid to much and henry can do everything he is doing on the field right now. QC will be our returner again so he is the fourth. Finally, you have to make a decision on simpson. If he is not good enough to be the fourth then cut him. Why pay him 2 million a year to be inactive every game. Draft a WR in the 3rd or 4th round to be your #4 WR.

We cant let Henry go

If we do we will regret it

by WhoDeyDerek on Oct 30, 2009 2:23 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Chad only has 1 or 2 more years left.

This will be the whole “letting Steinbach go to keep Levi and Willie” deal all over again. If they let henry go in favor of 2 WR’s in their 30’s (Chad, Coles), we will set ourselves up for failure again. I’m sure they can sign him to a new deal for pretty cheap right now. Lock him up for the next 5 years and let Chad play out his contract.

by smoormandiddy on Oct 30, 2009 7:59 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think that Chad’s got more left in the tank than we think.
It looks to me like Chad is still in top form, and should give us 2-4 more good years, but Coles doesn’t seem like he’s the guy of the future for us. It would be better to bring up the young guys who have proven they have what it takes like Henry and Caldwell, and let Simpson go. If he’s not good enough now, why should he be in 2 more years?

This is our year!

No franchise

The Bengals cannot afford to franchise Henry. The franchise tag secures Henry a deal worth an average of the top five wr salaries in the league. The Bengals already have too much money spent on Chad and Coles to pay Henry a top wr salary. Plus, the Bengals would never release Chad and Coles makes too much money to release.

Henry would have to come back at a moderate price in order for him to stay. If he is a restricted free agent then that will help, but you never know if another team will offer him a contract out of their price range.

There is enough veteran talent (Chad and Coles) and young talent (Andre and Jerome) to keep the wr position productive without Henry, but I would love to see Henry stay. If he goes, the Bengals love to draft wrs in the second and third rounds.

What about trading Coles?

How big of a hit on the cap salary would that take?

I really think we need to get him off the team if it means keeping Henry on.

first, i’m surprised that anyone voted to franchise slim; that basically means you think his talents are worth over $10 million dollars for a year. what’s that, 2 million per touchdown?

frankly, i see no reason to assume that simpson makes the team next year. they gave up on kenny irons after only two seasons, so i see no reason that simpson will automatically make it to his third, especially since he has yet to make it to the field in any capacity that involves wearing a uniform and wasn’t practice.

slim will get his if he stays straight and produces when given the chance. i’ve been glad to see his improved attitude and i think he’s the most polished receiver that he’s ever been.

i'm going to go america all over your ass!

i think he stays

i don’t know that he’s put up the numbers for anyone to offer him a killer contract. and we should get him for pretty cheap if we choose to resign him.. which would be a travesty not to.

by brandone on Oct 30, 2009 7:46 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

If they sign him now, they can get him cheap.

If they wait until the end of the season, it will get more expensive. Coles, while great as a run blocker, is past his prime and Chad probably only has about 2 good years left which will run right up to the end of his conference. Like Caldwell, Henry has many good years ahead of him. Sign him up now while he’s young and cheap.

by smoormandiddy on Oct 30, 2009 7:52 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I think, there I go thinking again,

but Coles is going to catch on. Wait and see!! I think you guys are to impatient, give him a little more time to find his role. Yea I know he’s a professional, but he needs to adapt to a damn good QB throwing to him. He never had that and never had any other WR along side him. He was always considered a #1 WR and getting accustomed to this O is going to take awhile. It’s taken awhile for the O to get rolling, didn’t it? Let’s wait and see at the end of the year. He always been a damn good WR. I’m going to give him a chance!

by WHYUS!! on Oct 30, 2009 11:45 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Never had a good QB throwing to him?

What about that Brett Favre guy? He adapted pretty well to him. Despite his plays he HAS made, there are so many drops left on his resume that he needs to make up for if he wants my support to have a starting job.

by WhoDeyDerek on Nov 1, 2009 10:56 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I will agree to disagree about Favre.

While Favre has been good throughout his career, I have thought since his last couple seasons in GB that he was washed up. With the Jets, he was way overrated as a QB. Now he’s only significant again because he has an All Pro RB named Adrian Peterson who takes a sh*tload of pressure off of him. Basically the point I’m making is that Brett Favre doesn’t have the accuracy of Palmer. Coles still had to make adjustments on poorly thrown balls even with Favre as his QB. Favre, though considered a HOF QB, does have a tendency to try to squeeze balls in triple coverage, and his pinpoint accuracy from past years has dropped .

I just hate the fact that everyone rides Brett Favre’s jock(ESPN, Madden, PK, others). They treat him like a god and truly believe he is incapable of wrongdoing. I also believe with how Favre has handled his wishy-washy retirement situation that he makes himself look like a selfish tool.

by Danimal, Destroyer of Worlds on Nov 1, 2009 11:12 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I have to disagree

I don’t like Favre… but he’s a damn good QB and he’s definitely still got it in him. That being said, I definitely can understand GB fans booing him. That is more than a slap in a face to go to the Vikings.

by WhoDeyDerek on Nov 2, 2009 5:34 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, but look at how much better the Vikings are with him. It’s not like AP made Tavaris Jackson a better player. Favre’s a living legend who deserves the respect and attention of defenses.

This is our year!

I would think Slim is going to be here for a couple more years.

C’mon. The guy owes Mike Brown a LOT. There’s no reason to suspect him of going all prima donna on us, or oppositely the Bengals saying he’s not right for the team.

Slim stays. He may sign sooner rather than later, but he’s not going anywhere anytime soon.

by UpStateMike on Oct 31, 2009 4:29 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Cut Coles ? Why ? Wasn’t Coles in the play when Slim scored his TD ? Coles has dropped a few passes, hasn’t 85 ? Do you think TJ would be happy only getting 3-4 passes thrown his way per game? Do think TJ’s productivity wouldn’t be down this year with a healthy 85 ? Coles has come in,kept his mouth shut, accepted his role and has asked what can he do to help the team win instead of complaining because he doesn’t get enough balls thrown to him. Who is a better blocker Coles or Slim ? Carson has four options and he’s spreading it around.Jackson was a better pick than Simpson, but Witten was an even better pick than Kelly Washington.

by redberkey on Oct 31, 2009 8:20 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I believe Henry is a restricted free agent so I’m sure we will have him back next year for a reasonable price. Beyond that it is unclear.

Henry is talented quick and sure handed but I haven’t been impressed with his develoment as a route runner or running timing patterns-which I believe is why he hasn’t seen the action this year many of us expected

Henry’s fate will largely depend on his ability to become a more multifaceted receiver and what he’s willing to accept as a contract. But I don’t advise the bengals to open their pockets on a one trick pony.

Caldwell on the other hand seems more like a complete package and given his skill set is more of a natural #1-chads replacement

Simpson was drafted to be the possession reciever of the future -TJs replacement-but it seems like he is on his last chance.

If Simpson truly is a bust don’t be surprised if the bengals draft a possession receiver next year.

by goffchile on Oct 31, 2009 6:30 PM EDT via mobile reply actions   0 recs

henry will only be a restricted free agent if there’s no salary cap next year. also, you have caldwell and simpson reversed. simpson was drafted to be the deep threat to replace chad and caldwell was drafted to be the possession receiver to replace tj. bubba’s living up to his end.

i'm going to go america all over your ass!

by Raging Clue on Nov 1, 2009 8:45 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

not to belabor it

…because it isn’t that significant, but I’m pretty sure I’m right on the Simpson/Caldwell thing. Caldwell was one of the quickest receivers to come out of that draft was the kind of receiver that forced you to defend the entire field (a definite characteristic of a #1) and the knock on him was that he wasn’t a complete package—inconsistent hands. Simpson on the other hand was drafted because of his ability to catch in traffic, good hands, good jumper—but the knock on him is that he’s slow.

by goffchile on Nov 1, 2009 12:25 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

i’m pretty sure simpson ran one of the fastest forties at the combine, on top of having a ridiculous vertical. he’s inactive for every game because he’s incapable of playing any spot except for chad’s position.

i'm going to go america all over your ass!

by Raging Clue on Nov 1, 2009 12:59 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

yes but slower

…than a lot of guys at the Combine who were drafted behind him—including Caldwell. And I’m not disputing his vertical. just pointing out how he would be most likely used in the NFL. I am sure he was the fastest guy in the Big south Conference but that doesn’t make you a deep threat in the NFL.

by goffchile on Nov 2, 2009 11:24 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Ive always hated combine numbers..

I guess they document some things well, but if they ran ten 40’s in a row I bet you would see a whole different set of numbers pop up. There is more to speed than just flat out running down a track for 5 seconds, he has enough speed to get open in the NFL.

Agree w/ u Tennbengalfan...

but who knows. If we had Jackson maybe we win one more game last year and can’t draft Maualuga (Although Fitzpatrick was our Quarterback. We may not have won that extra game with him in there). I am a half-glass full guy! If I remember correctly the bengals and their huge scouting department loved his hand size and his verticle leap was incredible as well. What a joke!!! Back to Henry though, the guys like Chad (excerpt in his new book saying that Chris is the real deal….he also said that Levi was a guy they needed to keep…LOLOL….glass door Levi) but Fanene and John Thornton believe in that guy. Thornton is a good writer and thinks that he should be the number 2. He doesn’t have to kiss Mikey’s butt anymore so I’ll go with his opinion on this one.

Marvin

I don’t suppose it really matters much what we do with Slim, so long as Marvin- or Brat, refuses to get him involved in the offensive game plan.

franchise?

you have to be kidding. he’ll be available for cheap to us next season.

as for simpson, he needs to do something to merit a move into the 4th slot. “i think” isn’t evidence of anything he’s done on the field.

you want speculation? i think, simpson is closer to being an ex bengal than henry is in 2010.
