Ask Baltimore Beatdown: Ravens Blogger

Hey Kirkendall, JungleJohn and the rest of Cincy Jungle! It's Bruce from Baltimore Beatdown, the Ravens blogger from SB Nation. Time to get a little "dialogue" together for this week's matchup. Who would have thought this game would be for the AFC North lead? Both of us were actually really close to being undefeated this season except for some last second disappointments. The rivalry here has been pretty contentious at times, both on the field and on these pages as well.

Leave your questions and comments here and I'll stop back all week to respond. At the same time, hop on over to The Beatdown to look around, join and post your thoughts on Sundays game. Thanks!

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Cincy Jungle's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Cincy Jungle's writers or editors.

Hey Bruce. It seems like your running back situation over there has been pretty dominant so far this year. The real surprise has been McGahee, but Rice has been a big contributor as well. Who do you expect to have the bigger game here? Which guy should we be most concerned about stopping?

This is our year!

by Paul Cannon on Oct 7, 2009 3:01 PM EDT reply actions

The game breaker is still Ray Rice

as he is a three down back in the middle of the field. He has great moves and is surprisingly tough to bring down. McGahee is a threat near the goal line or inside the Red Zone, as he leads the NFL with seven TD’s so far. While LeRon McClain has been more of a blocking FB this year, he is still money inside the one or two yard line.

The feature back

is Ray Rice. He is the main cog in te 3 headed monster. He is a game breaker every time he touches the ball and surprisingly difficult to bring down at 5;8" at best (in heels. What?). However, Willis McGahee already has 7 TD’s this season, and has been getting touches inside the Red Zone. A lot of Ravens fans are wondering where LeRonMccClain has gone as he didn’t factor in last weekend’s game at all, but should not be overlooked.

Hey Bruce...

The Ravens D has been great against the run (1st), but pretty poor against the pass (23rd). What’s your take on the Ravens D in the post Rex Ryan era?

by The Dealio on Oct 7, 2009 5:58 PM EDT reply actions

The defense is still strong

But still trying to get used to a new system. We have a few players stepping in that were not in there last year such as SS Dawan Landry (who was our starting SS for 3 straight season before getting injured last year), Dominique Foxworth and Fabian Washington. We have a totally revamped secondary that is still trying to mesh with each other. However, they have done a fairly good job excluding the San Diego melt down. Brady and Rivers are great, great QB’s that basically no defenses are going to shut down on a consistent basis.

How well our secondary plays is going to be based on how well our pass rush is. If you can make a QB throw the ball when and where he does not want to, the secondary will be able to shut down WR and possibly even make a few picks. We have one of the top defensive lines in the league this year and they have done an average job of getting to the QB. Holding Brady to 250 yards passing is a pretty good deal. We were able to limit Moss to 3 catches for only 50 yards and an easy TD, so that is a good sign.

Rex Ryan just brought the most insane Blitz packages you could ever imagine, and he is doing it in NY now. Mattison is old school, he sticks to traditional schemes, but they still work. If DT Haloti Ngata and Kelley Gregg are getting into the back field rather quickly, expect our secondary to have a field day against you guys.

The Run defense has been stellar, as you can see by our number 1 ranking. That is credit to our D-Line and LB making big time stops. Whenever you can shut down the run as good as we are, you have a chance of winning every time. It is very hard (still possible) to win in this league when you do not have a running game at all in all 4 quarters. If you want to have a chance to beat us, it would be smart to have Carson come out slinging it and hope to get an early lead.

You have to hate losing more than you love winning.

Marvin Lewis said during his press conference that the Ravens offense this year may not be too much different from last year? Do you agree with Marvin’s take on the Raven’s offense or do you agree with the media in that they are much more explosive this year? What does the Bengals D need to do in order to keep Flacco and his offensive weapons under control?

by 80%OFTHETIMEIMRIGHTEVERYTIME on Oct 7, 2009 8:00 PM EDT reply actions

It's pretty much the same guys at the skill position,

although Kelley Washington (remember him?) is a new addition and I love his enthusiasm and fearlessness. Our o-line was much improved but now may be without our LT, Jared Gaither, who was carted off the field last week with a head injury and his status for Sunday is doubtful. RT and fist round draft pick Michael Oher will move over to the left side and will be an interesting matchup for Odom there. I say stop the run w/o putting 8 in the box and force Joe to throw under pressure. If you give him time, you will pay dearly.

marvin is wrong because he is not accounting for Rice’s increased involvement and the strengthening of the O-line with Oher. Heap is also now healthy. I’d say we are 25% better on O than last year.

in all honesty, there are too many weapons to control flacco. he’ll get his 30+ points. too many targets to cover. seriously. what you can do is find the tallest guy on your team and post him up on Foxworth or Fabian.

by raven on Oct 8, 2009 12:27 AM EDT reply actions

if there's no way to control him...

why did they only score 21 last week? you just have to get him to throw it to clayton. haha

and if gaither is out, i think it makes things interesting. because it forces people to play positions they haven’t practiced with. oher has been great on the right side and was pretty serviceable filling in last week, but i want to see what he can do on a full game basis on the left. also, who is the backup RT?

i can’t wait for this game.

by brandone on Oct 8, 2009 7:33 AM EDT up reply actions

Marshall Yanda is the RT if Oher moves to the left side

Yanda was the RG and has played tackle in college and his first year in the pros. Oher may even be a better LT than Gaither, but now our depth is scary thin on the o-line. However, if healthy, thye are as a good as any.

The only reason we were held to 21 points last week was that horrible interception that Flacco threw at the end of the first half in the NE Red Zone in addition to the dropped ball at the end of the game. If those two drives finished with even just FG’s, we’d have tied and possibly won that game.

field goals...

You don’t need field goals to win games… or extra points for that matter, right Bengals?

Obviously you think you do

Franchises Graham? I hear the Ravens are going to franchise our waterboy. He makes some mean gatorade.

We don’t joke about our Gatorade. Palmer needs the perfect mixture.

We know all about the ifs

If that pass against the broncos hadn’t been tipped

if Andre smith would have signed right away

if Palmer hadn’t been hurt in the playoff in 05.

Haha. I love watching bengals ravens games. They’re always competitive and close.

by brandone on Oct 8, 2009 3:36 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

True.

The Bengals/Ravens rivalry is also not so dirty imo. Neither of us like the Steelers, that’s for sure. The Browns are hated as well, but they’re rarely a factor anyways. I can’t bring myself to hate the Ravens the way i do with Pittsburgh.

im still mad about the Palmer injury in ’05. That set the stage for the Squeeler run. That injury changed the division for years.

Hows Henry bee doing?

by raven on Oct 8, 2009 11:01 PM EDT reply actions

he had a quad pull right around the first game, so they’ve used him sparingly. Some think he’s in the doghouse with Marvin Lewis, yet I just can’t understand why that would be. With all the years he was suspended and what not, he wasn’t in the doghouse then, so why now?

I think they’ve been bringing him along slowly, plus with a big commitment to running the ball, they haven’t used much 3- or 4-wide sets. Well, at least not until mid-4th quarter when our O really comes alive…….(ugh, forehead slap)

by Hudepohl Dey on Oct 9, 2009 9:15 AM EDT up reply actions

from what Marvin has said..

Henry still needs to show he is a complete receiver, which means he needs to learn how to block better. Thats just the impression that I get..

by 80%OFTHETIMEIMRIGHTEVERYTIME on Oct 9, 2009 1:29 PM EDT up reply actions

Henry scares me

as he is the type of receiver that gives us fits, especially with a smaller Coles replacing TJ.

Good morning BaltimoreBeatdown blogger,

hey, I noticed Jarret Johnson as DNP on the recent practice report. Is that veteran rest or does he really have shoulder problems?

I realize as long as 52 and 55 are on the field that LB corps is sick, but it seems there has been a hit to that position group this year.

Thanks

by Hudepohl Dey on Oct 9, 2009 8:41 AM EDT reply actions

JJ will be there

he does have a sore shoulder, but that is from planting opponents so hard into the turf. Guy gets forgotten next to Ray, Bart Scott, Adalius Thomas all these years but is a baller!

aka 'Rexx'

by Bruce Raffel on Oct 10, 2009 10:35 AM EDT up reply actions

JJ will play. We just don’t have the mojo at LB this year. I’ve been taking a lot of heat on the Beatdown for calling Ray out. Outside of these two we are weak. Our great D-line has saved our LB situation from embarassment.
