Ask a Steelers fan
Okay, guys (and gals) here we are. Week 10 cometh, and with it THE match-up of the season.
(Jumpy jumpy)
As of right now, our two teams are the best in the league. Screw Tom "I impregnated a super model" Brady. Fornicate Peyton "I finally won in the playoffs" Manning. Piss on Kyle "Neckbeard" Orton, and giggle at Phillip "Crybaby" Rivers.
We are the the teams to beat this year in the AFC. I, for one am nervous about this one, since it has miles of playoff implications (not to mention bragging rights, and sole control of the North).
I am here as a fellow fan, and will conduct myself with all cordiality that I am afforded. (Translation: You be nice to me, I'll be nice to you. Be a dick, and get it back. Not threatening, just saying) I want this to be as fact based as possible. I know It's going to be hard for some of us (Steeler fans included), as we are rabid fans of our respective franchises. I am asking, in the interest of fandom (is that a word? LOL), to keep it clean, civil and most importantly, fun!
Thanks all!! Discuss!

OK, this should be good.
Assuming that since we have equal records and a very good, very close game already this year, what are two things the Steelers must do to stay competitive in this game?

Well...
what are two things the Steelers must do to stay competitive in this game?
Same thing everybody should do to win games; Pressure on the QB, stop the run, and execute on offense. I know that’s 3 things, but you can’t narrow it down to just two. Carson doesn’t get the respect he deserves, since he plays in the toughest division in the entire NFL. He plays well in the pocket, but not so much when flushed.
With Troy P. back and 100%, our D is the best in the league. Although it sucks that one player can make that much of a difference, there it is. With him in the line-up, the LB’s don’t need to drop into coverage as much, and therefore get better penetration, and can commit to stopping the run.

actually, one of the keys to the resurgence of the bengals this year has been carson’s ability to make plays with his feet; bratkowski’s even been designing plays with a lot of rollouts and moving pockets to put carson on the move.

Sputtered Start
The Steelers sputtered to start this year, when you squeaked out a win against Tennessee and then lost two straight to the Bears and then to us. I thought the best game that you played this year was against a tough Vikings team (I live in Minnesota and fans still aren’t happy about the phantom tripping call) and your worst game was almost obviously against a Bears team that does not look to be in playoff contention after the last two weeks.
What games do you think the Steelers played the best/worst in, and what factors contributed to those performances?

Hmmm...
I thought the best game that you played this year was against a tough Vikings team
Interesting, since that was Ben’s WORST performance of the year (I think. Not as big stats guy, so it is only my opinion)
and your worst game was almost obviously against a Bears team that does not look to be in playoff contention after the last two weeks.
Correction: Jeff Reed’s worst game. We had them beat, just like we had your team beat, but Skippy “The Dispenser Slayer” lost us 6 points, which means we SHOULD have won by 3, instead of the other way around. I’m not even going to get into our 4th quarter melt-down in our last match-up…I’m still heated about it, btw…
What games do you think the Steelers played the best/worst in, and what factors contributed to those performances?
1. Best: I must say this last one @ Denver.
2. Worst: The last time we played you.

It might have been Ben’s worst game, but Minnesota was your most impressive team win.
Truthfully, I think the Broncos are about a 9-10 win sort of football team, good, but not great. They certainly didn’t handle the AFC North very well, even though the got the best of us (perhaps with a little good fortune).
Say what you want against the Bears, but they don’t look to be a good football team at this point. You should have won that game even in Reed missed 5 FGs.
Our defense tends to bring out the worst in other teams, so I’ll take it as a compliment that you had your worst game against us.
Thanks for your thoughts.

Oops...wasn't finished...(grumble)
1. Best: Our D came to the game. Even without Ryan “Knockout” Clark, our D man-handled Denver’s offense. Our O-line showed up as well, keeping the LEAGUE LEADER IN SACKS to .5, and exposing Denver’s DB’s for the old men they are.
2. Worst: Where do I begin other than our D went back to the locker room in the 4th…’nuff said…

Will the Steelers get back to running the Ball
first and foremost? Or will we see Ben throw the ball around a lot like the first game?

I think
it will be pretty even playcalling. Although, if one aspect of our offense gets firing, I expect to see the majority of plays go that route.

I feel like chiming in
Our Rushing attack has been on song the last few weeks. The Monday Night Game was a great highlight as to how well our Right Side of the line, being Trai Essex and Willie Colon, has been playing. Willie Colon, who we loved to hate in the offseason, has been pretty damn good the last few weeks.
It takes the pressure away from continually running behind Heath Miller all the time.
We will hit the field as we usually do, expecting to stuff your run game. If we keep it tit for tat, we will be running the ball alot, setting up play action. If you havent heard, Big Bens passer rating whilst using Play Action is a couple points off perfect.
It will be evenly distributed, like SteelFever says, the only question is which avenue your own defense chooses to target, either the Pass or Run. We can use either the run to set up the pass, or vice versa.

We beat ourselves in both of our losses this year.
Not to discount your efforts in our second loss, but Skippy lost us that game in Chi-town, and poor execution on D lost us the first Bengals-Steelers game. They let Carson and “Don’t call me Johnson” walk all over them in the 4th quarter (I think it was Chadwick…not too sure though, as I’ve slept since then…)

I think early in the season we showed a bit of rust
And a lack of “game fitness”. In the last few weeks, we have been playing much much better, particularly in the last moments of the Vikings game and the whole second half of the Broncos game.
Sure Skippy missed the two field goals vs Chicago, but really it was poor execution on key downs and a half hearted 2 minute drill by our defense which let us down against the Bears and the Bengals the first time (not taking anything away, you guys jumped when we gave the opening)
Dont expect the same treatment this time. The Steelers are on a roll. Its gonna be a different ball game

what's up, SteelFever
I keep reading comments to the effect of “the bengals no longer have Odom therefore they’re no where near as good on defense.”
(not necessarily Steeler fans, definitely not on BTSC, but definitely raven and bears fans along with some national prognositcator d-bags)
Seems as if many don’t realize our Bengal Defense is pretty darn good, and that Antwan Odom’s results were based off of good schemes, and a big day against Green Bay. In reality, a 3 headed monster of #’s 68, 92, and 93 have stepped up and contributed admirably in place of Odom……(rambling, sorry)
So my question is, does this Bengal Defense have a chance to get some pressure on Big Ben? He’s so frustrating to Sack because he’s tough and elusive. Has the PIT O-Line been doing a better job protecting him as of late? or do you think the emergence of one Mendenhall has provided balance on offense and takes the pressure of #7?

not sure where fever went
but here is my two cents on your question(s) yes, the Bengals Defense has a chance to get some pressure on Big Ben, I don’t think his style of qb play allows for opposing teams not to get pressure on him. it’s bringing him down that’s the hard part. key play in the Denver game, 3rd and 10 in the red-zone, Bronco’s get good pressure, BB rolls out, pump fakes and makes it look like an easy TD to Wallace.
i think the o-line has improved game in and game out and the emergence of beetle juice has been what we were looking for when we took him in the 1st round obviously. our o-line has been together all year, the same unit starting week in and week out and you get some continuity there. much like your defesne, they’ve been playing together now for a few years and your db’s are looking better and the LB (not going to try and spell his name) from USC is tough.

k...
does this Bengal Defense have a chance to get some pressure on Big Ben?
Any team has a chance to get to Ben and sack him. The good ones, and the bad ones have, but not for lack on the line’s side. Ben held the ball too damn long on 99% of the sacks this year, which credits the opposing DB’s for nailing their coverages.

by SteelFever on Nov 11, 2009 4:34 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Every team has a chance to get to Ben
Especially since he likes holding on to the ball for hours. But it’ll be tough because our o-line is so much better than last year. Denver got to him a few times, but for the most part we held them in check.
Mendenhall is coming along slowly but he still gets a little careless sometimes. He still doesn’t secure the ball as well as he should and he occasionally spins when he gets through a hole. Many of us on BTSC call him Spindenhall for that reason.
The most effective way to pressure Ben is to bring stunt your d-line and bring a delayed blitz off of it. Either bring the delayed blitz or spy him with a LB and come after him every time he steps up in the pocket. I’ve seen certain teams do that and it works quite often.
by StoneColdSteel on Nov 11, 2009 9:18 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I'll weigh in again : )
Coverage is key if you want to pressure Big Ben. Your DL has been playing well, but so has our OLine. Id like to note we held Jared Allen without a sack, and sack leader Dumervil mustered just half a sack
Other than a terrible blown assignment by Kemoeatu last week, nearly every sack on Ben was a coverage sack or Big Ben sack. Our OL has been doing a surprisingly good job.
You have two very talented corners, Joseph and Hall. Those two shutting down Bens number 1 and 2s (Holmes and Ward) will be the key to generating some pressure.
I really think you will need more than 4 man rushes to get the best of our OL, but thats just my opinion

Thanks for the responses. Now on to the Steeler defense. Earlier in the year, one of your bloggers put together an interesting post about some of the schemes and formations that were being used right out of the gate. (the 2-4-5 and 1-5-5 i believe.)
With #43 back, have they been getting back to these confusing fronts? Does the lack of Aaron Smith hinder any of those attacks?

As I said further up the thread
With Hair Care on the field, the LB’s can focus more on the rush and run defense, instead of dropping back into coverage. With Troy out, Fox or Timmons would have to drop and cover a TE or a releasing RB, not allowing them to rush at all.
Yes, the D can give much more funky looks now that Hairspray is back 100%, because he is literally EVERYWHERE. Maybe he is out of position sometimes, but he closes so fast, it makes little difference.

SteelFever pretty much hit it on the head
43 allows us to do so much with the defense. Lebeau gave Denver a lot of different looks, which is one of the reasons Orton looked more like H.S. quarterback on Monday. Our defense could be even better if Lawrence Timmons were playing better, but he’s still young.
Aaron Smith’s loss hinders us when we go up against more physical o-lines, like yours. Denver’s o-line was kind of smallish and more built for the zone – blocking scheme they ran under Shanahan for so many years.
by StoneColdSteel on Nov 11, 2009 9:28 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Shanahan has always had the biggest Oline in the NFL
for years, just saying if they are the same Oline.
by WHYUS!! on Nov 12, 2009 7:28 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
That's not true
The Cowboys and the Eagles have the heaviest o-lines in the league almost every year. I remember a report on ESPN where they were comparing sizes of different team’s offensive lines and the Broncos were one of the lightest.
Minnesota’s o-line is also one of the biggest in the league.

I am surprised..
No one has mentioned Whines Hard winning the “dirtiest player in the NFL” award recently. NFL players voted and gave this award to him.. not fans.
When is our defense gonna get ours against him..?
by 80%OFTHETIMEIMRIGHTEVERYTIME on Nov 12, 2009 9:30 AM EST reply actions 0 recs
Because this is a question and answer post.
Please post in a question form and Steelfever will answer it… for example:
How do you think Hines ward got the reputation for being the dirtiest player in the NFL?
or…
How do you as a Steelers fan feel about Hines being voted the dirtiest player in the NFL?
or
Who do you think the dirtiest player in the NFL will sideline in this upcoming game?
Possible answers (at least my opinions).
1. He lays people out on huge hits. He hits as hard as Ray Lewis and can catch a ball and leap over pro-bowl corners in a single bound. What team wouldn’t love to have a Hines Ward on their team. Jonn Gruden said he’d love to have 7 of them on his team if he were still a coach.
2. We (at least myself and some guy on MNF holding a sign that says..) Love our Dirtiest Player #86.
3. The first guy he has a chance to hit he will. If the guy can’t take it he’ll sit out a few plays. If he has a glass jaw, he may sit out the rest of the season.
I wasn’t pleased because we didn’t win - Mike Tomlin (after the 2009 week 2 loss to Chicago).

Thats all I have said, you still have not answered what I said wrong in my initial post.. how are these questions difficult to answer? I still think you are taking this a little too seriously, my ‘behavior’ doesn’t need regulating..
Which is what brings me to the mall cop. A perfect description of what you are doing here.. You would be the mall cop who sees a kid running and pulls them aside to give them a lecture. Chill out, until you began “regulating” there were no issues here. Act like you are guarding the president or something, I responded with equal sarcasm that fanofsteel used when mocking my original post. Or did you miss that? kiss the baby.. its funny, its okay. I had no idea my desire to have people actually answer my question instead of mock my post would result in me getting harassed by you, the author of this thread. This really was not a big deal by any means, I was not posting rough profanity or calling people racist names or posting nude photos of fat girls holding steelers flags.. I was simply retorting to the original sarcastic post. End of story. I did not appreciate you calling me out over a seemingly harmless post, especially when it was a retaliation to some one else doing the exact same thing. I didn’t even bait him. You created this nonsense.. fanofsteel had nothing to be offended by, why would anyone else? You knew this was coming because you created it.. don’t be mad when the seed you plant grows. Please never mention my dick again..

Please child,
I first heard “child please” in the 80’s so it’s not new at all. If you just heard of it you’re either very lame or ethnically challenged. It’s probably new to Bengals fans though just because Chad said it.
I don’t mean to put down Chad, but it’s kinda lame to bring back a phrase from like 10 or 20 years ago.

you're gonna get regulated with talk like that..
is it as lame as twirling a little yellow towel over your head? I don’t mean to put you down, ha, just kidding.. it’s only lame if it doesn’t catch on and you still try to press it. All he’s doing is attaching his name to a phrase, it’s good marketing.

The terrible towel is original
Child please isn’t. Neither is Who Dey, which you may have stolen from the Saints and changed it(Who Dat).

WHO DAT?
is a Louisiana expression in general. Fans of LSU, Tulane, and other LA schools use it as well.
I live in Ohio and root for the Bengals, but I am a Louisiana native.

Haha, yeah, the Steelers are the only Sports franchise to handout and waive linens at sports games. Sorry, but it’s not original. I’m a Minnesotan and at Twins games they sell “Homer Hankies” and waive those. It’s done all around the country.
This is our year!

when...
who was the first? I think thats what makes it original, we may have been the first to do it….
by tannofsteel84 on Nov 13, 2009 3:25 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
agreed
I dont mind it, but it is old, nothing wrong with bringing it back though, just never heard many grown men say “child please” until he did it, back then women would only say it. And thats not to insinuate anything :)

nah
Its like recycling, Don’t Steeler fans like recycling? Cheeky and fun is what I’d go with.

I admit... I was a little too excited and missed the ?
so…to throw the answer to your question.
They’ve had, I believe, two chances to “ketchup” to Hines since his block on Rivers and haven’t been able to do anything. Although in the 2nd game last year they did hold him to one catch for 37 Yards. And in the first meeting this year Ward had a measly 4 catches for 82 yards. So if they are gonna “get” him they better hurry he’s gonna retire in like 5 or 6 years.
I wasn’t pleased because we didn’t win - Mike Tomlin (after the 2009 week 2 loss to Chicago).

Thanks.
I actually enjoyed this post, mostly because it was just friendly banter in response to my question. The whole reason I asked the question was to get people talking, unfortunately I was made an example of which completely took away from any kind of conversation we could have about how the Steelers usually push us around. I agree that nothing will happen, I just hope our defense keeps the effort up. I swear sometimes they just look asleep out there..

Never
No defense is ever gonna nail Hines the way he nails everybody else. And is it a coincidence that the best teams in the league always have a player on that list? Just sayin.

I agree, because no one else has the opportunities that Whines has.. he catches DB’s looking in the backfield and drops them, or he sees players who do not see him coming and he wrecks them. If he has the ball he is going to see the D coming, I hope some one steps on his throat.

Thanks again
Trying to be as diplomatic as possible, but it isn’t easy if other BTSC members act like that. Besides, if I have to “mall cop” Bengals fans, I must, in all fairness do it to Steelers fans as well. Sorry, I know it sucks, but that’s the way it’s gotta be.
BTW, notice I said “Bengals”, and didn’t put a silly on-purpose mis-spelling of the name.

First of all, well done by the steelers against the Broncos on MNF.
You really put it to us.
Secondly, what is the most important individual matchup in this game, in your opinion?
Thirdly, do you think the bengals will be as successful airing it out as they were last time? Obviously, the steeler secondary is pretty strong, but Ocho and Coles and Caldwell have been on fire lately. The Chris Henry injury is a killer, but they have strong receivers, as well. Palmer can sling it.
I’m looking forward to the bengals/steelers matchup because both teams played the broncos, so I want to see how each team is playing each other. Also, I am from near cincinnati, so I catch a lot of bengal/steeler games anyways. It’s always a fun game to watch.
If Taylor Swift were to try and tackle me, I'd let her.

Thank you KB

William Gay VS. whatever receiver they choose to line him up against. I know Carson will attack Gay’s side of the field. Mainly because Taylor is one of, if not the best, shut-down corner in the league.
#2. No. We didn’t have a certain #43 on the field last time, and he takes away a TON of plays, just by being on the field, making opposing QB’s take an extra second to decide where to throw. That’s all our front 7 need, for the most part.

They were only successful throwing it in the 4th quarter
Other than that we shut them down. I might be in the minority, but I’m just a little concerned about their running game. We did a good job Monday night against a smallish Denver o-line, but Cincy’s o-line is very big and physical. The loss of Aaron Smith hasn’t come back to bite us yet though.
Just know that they won’t be facing the same team this Sunday as they did a couple of weeks ago.

Bengals or Steelers. That’s why this is going to be such a great game.

Football hits
There’s a lot of talk about the Ketih Rivers, HInes Ward play last year. As a Bengals fan, I’m personally not offended by it. Why should I be? Keith RIvers wasn’t offended, he called it a football play, and thats what it was.
What I’m excited about though is the thought of moving up a guy like Purify, who reportedly likes to block. he also reportedly likes to hit safties. Have fun Steelers fans!
