UPDATE: Purify joins 53-man roster, Roy Williams to IR
C. Trent Rosecrans, the Bengals' official Twitter account and Joe Reedy (in that order) confirm that Maurice Purify is indeed joining the 53-man roster today. To make room for Purify, safety Roy Williams was/will be placed on season-ending Injured Reserve.
And I was really looking forward to having Roy back to scramble some Steelers' eggs on Sunday, too.

How long did he have this injury for this year?
I ask because he injured one of his forearms twice last season and was wondering if it was the same one? Did he play all the games up to this point?

He hasn't played past week 4 this year.
It’s the same injury.

Draft aspect
Safety or TE seem to be the most likely spot to spend next years 1st round pick, with safety seeming more likely.

maybe USC’s Taylor Mays will fall to them, and we’ll have Rivers, Rucker, Mays, and Maualuga…..we’re just a couple more USC players away from glory
3 yards and a pile of dust

that would be awesome
But I’m banking on us picking last!

Nice! Congrats Purify, you’re in the NFL! Hopefully we’ll see him take the field.
This is our year!

Never fear
Maualuga, Rivers, and Crocker will do the Squealer scrambling Sunday…and Benson will dirty Polamalu’s locks.

Not to offend anyone but...
why is everyone so hyped about this Mo Purify dude? Shouldn’t we give our 2nd round Simpson a chance before Mo? I really hope to see Simpson lined up as fourth receiver.
I don’t have anything against Purify, it’s just that I don’t know anything about him, anybody wanna shed some light on why he’s supposedly that good?

no offense taken
Pretty much everyone would be happier if Chris Henry were uninjured and still occupying this roster spot. It’s not that we can’t wait to see Purify play… but next to the coaching staff, Carson Palmer would be the one with the best read on the abilities of the receivers. If Carson actually offers the opinion in public, which pro players rarely do, that one guy (Purify) is better than another (Simpson), I’d almost take it to the bank.

Hope you're right, I just hate the thought that we might've wasted our 2nd round pick on Simpson that year, I wanna see him play

The deal with Mo
Here is the deal with Mo. I’ve known him for years, and played JC football with his cousins. He is from a small school in Nor Cal that doesn’t get a lot of recruiting respect even though they have some great players. Mo was teammate of Rey Maualuga as I am sure you know. He would have been a top D-1 recruit out of HS if he played in an area that got more respect and you might have taken him with that 2nd round pick! As it played out he went to a JC and only had limited time to play at the D-1 level. But he has excelled at each level, and I think you will be in for a pleasant surprise. Actually the fact that his is being moved up over a 2nd rounder should tell you a lot, teams don’t like to waste draft picks either so if they were equal talents Simpson would get the nod, but this (and Carsons comments) should tell you who is a better NFL prospect. Also Mo is an incredible athlete, he also starred at SFCC, in basketball and could have played either sport at the D-1 level after JC. If I were a Bengals fan I would be happy you got a hard worker, tremendous athlete, and big NFL body without using a 2nd round pick! Hope it works out, with 2 Eureka guys on the roster I have been converted to a Cincy fan, good luck today!

What Happens If...
Mo Purify excels? What happens if he does (almost) everything right at WR, and Carson likes throwing to him in the limited chances he’s on the field? What happens if management believes he’s a legit #4 receiver and solid special teams player? It leaves several scenarios:
1. Let Chris Henry walk. Mo Purify is #4 next year.
2. Re-sign Henry, trade Coles. Ochocino, Caldwell, Henry, Purify at WR next year with maybe Simpson pitching something in.
3. Re-sign Henry and drop Purify.
4. Re-sign Henry, drop SImpson, and let Purify stay in the active/inactive purgatory all year
So if he plays well, what happens? Thoughts?

If Purify excels...
…the Bengals don’t need to draft another wide receiver next year.
Right now we have
Chad Ochocinco 2012
Laveranues Coles 2013
Chris Henry 2010 (RFA)
Andre Caldwell 2012
Jerome Simpson 2012
Quan Cosby 2010 (?)
Maurice Purify 2010 (?)
The way I see it, there won’t be any payroll crisis at WR until 2012. It going to be difficult to resign all three—- Simpson, Caldwell and Ochocinco. Which means we need have guys in the shoots by next year to be ready for 2013. If Purify rocks it, great that gives us another solid receiver, we sign him to a nice little three year contract and we are looking good. Whether or not we resign Henry is going to be dependent on whether he expects #1 receiver money for a #4 role. If someone else is willing to offer him that-good for him-we get another draft pick. Probably a fair trade and maybe we pick his replacement.
