Mike Brown isn't ready to crown his team, and could be adding to it Posted by Mike Florio on November 14, 2009 7:45 PM ET As the Cincinnati Bengals continue to make their way through a schedule that has yielded a 6-2 record to date, the guy who signs the checks is taking a cautious approach to the team's fortunes.

"We aren't like Indianapolis that just tears people apart week after week or New England," Brown told Alex Marvez of FOXSports.com.  "We've put together a pretty good season to this point, but for the most part, it's been very close games. . . .  It's too early for congratulations.  We're at the midpoint of this season.  Who knows what the second half will bring?  We're just fighting and scrapping and we'll see where it goes."

Brown's team is "fighting and scrapping" with a roster consisting of more than a few players who have had trouble in the past, and who have become quality players when given a second (or, as in the case of receiver Chris Henry, fifth or sixth) chance.  Brown himself admits that roughly half his team's starters have "come off the scrapheap somewhere or at least had to overcome something that was difficult."

It's no surprise, then, that we're catching wind of rumors that the Bengals are on the short list to add veteran tailback Larry Johnson.  Though Cedric Benson is thriving, Johnson's presence would bolster a depth chart currently consisting of Bernard Scott and Brian Leonard.

Really, how could the Bengals be ruled out?  Many have forgotten Jay Glazer's report that the Bengals made a run at Mike Vick.  Brown knows how to buy low, scooping talented players from the "scrapheap" for bargain-basement deals.

Though it's unknown whether Johnson is interested in joining the Bengals, the destination might look a lot more attractive if the Bengals can complete a sweep of the Steelers, to go along with their sweep of the Ravens.

If we picked up LJ

Who would they cut at RB? I think it’d have to be Scott. Leonard has proven to be an effective 3rd down back that can block.

Am I saying pick up LJ? No! We don’t need him. But if Brown does roll the dice on this guy who is he going to replace?

injury reserve back up plan

Ok, if Leonard or Scott goes down for the year. I won’t trade the talent and youth for this senior citizen.

Scott and Leonard are plenty of backup

I’d say it’s a reach to say this team needs a washed up RB that has a bad attitude.

Why would they think LJ wouldn't be pissed playing here?

He would be stuck behind Benson on the depth chart and get very few carries. This would only cause distraction and problems the team doesn’t need at this point when they are playing so well. Johnson would start tweeting about how he should get more carries and call out Marvin Lewis, so this is a stupid thought.

Just think if we had signed Vick, that would have been a nightmare. All the bs attention he has gotten even though he has barely played and is third string.

Look at Corey Dillion!!

When Corey left to go to New England, he was told shut your mouth and know your role. He did this and everything was fine for him and the Patriots. They won a SB with Dillion. So maybe, just maybe LJ can work here also. For the time being!!

LJ is an awesome RB. Back when the Chefs had a decent o-line he was the most fun player to watch in the NFL. The aggressive way he took off every time he got the ball should be required watching for every rookie RB. His speed around the corner, his power running over people, his ability to make cuts and squeeze into holes in the line, all amazing.

When he was drafted by the Chefs, the absolute worst fit in the NFL for him as they already had Priest Holmes and a decent backup, he seethed for a couple years and was lights-out every time he got a chance to play. When Holmes went out and LJ finally got the starting job, he was absolutely dominating. Then the team went down the tubes in nearly every way. Nobody worth a roster spot at QB, FB, WR, or OL, and still people talked about LJ as the reason the Chefs weren’t good anymore. Defenses had 2 guys to worry about, LJ and Tony Gonzalez. Nobody else would worry the Stanford Cardinal defense, much less the San Diego Chargers.

After the past couple seasons of being on an embarrassingly bad team with embarrassingly bad coaching, he’s going to get another chance and he’s going to make the most of it. If it’s with the Bengals, I’ll be very happy. I suspect it will be with the Patriots though, and he’s going to be a FORCE.

Looks like you guys may need a back like LJ now...

If Ced Benson is hurt worse than the Bengals are letting on.

I think the guy is a fruitcake f a human being, but if he has a decent O-Line, and a coach/owner that glares right back at him the second he starts glaring/pouting like a little baby girl, then he ay be the answer short term.

Incentive laden, one year contract. No one else is even offering him a box of Twinkies to play at this point.

Jamaal Charles

Charles just proved last night why LJ should not become a Bengal. It’s not just because he’s a lockeroom killer, it’s because he’s washed up. Charles gained 103 yards rushing against Oakland on 13 carries, but when Johnson went up against Oakland, he gained only 78 yards on 24 carries. Sure KC’s o-line isn’t the greatest, but he never should have had the starting job in KC to begin with.

Scott deserves his chance to prove he is a capable back-up, and if we need a fill-in guy we can sign Dede Dorsey for a couple weeks, just in case the Benson thing is worse than we were hoping.

This is our year!

jamall charles also fumbles the ball A TON

and the play calling was completely different yesterday with charles then it was with LJ, and not to mention the chiefs was playing with a lead for most of the game and called better running plays that suits jamaal’s playing style

Since when did chiefs fans turn into Yankees fans?
