Post-Game Thread: Cincinnati Bengals (7-3) 17 - Oakland Raiders 20 (3-7)
So, I don't really have anything to say about this one. We dominated every phase of the game but turned the ball over at some very inopportune times, including Andre Caldwell's fumble kickoff, and Jeremi Johnson's fumble in the red zone. Shayne Graham also missed a field goal that was about 35 yards long. Feel free to continue discussing the loss here, I really don't have anything to say about it, I'm too disgusted. The Bengals did not play a complete game and made terrible mistakes down the stretch, including a dropped interception by Johnathan Joseph, and did not put the game away.
Unbelievable. Enjoy the gift Oakland, Pittsburgh, and the rest of the AFC. The Bengals really served this one up on a platter.

Then you can say we’re frauds like the Broncos.
We lost one game, on a couple bad plays. Come on fellas, man up. It sucks, but we’re still a game up on the Steelers.

If you guys want to win every game then just be fans of the colts or patriots
we are trying to work our way through a minefield called an NFL schedule and we are doing pretty damn good right now. Better than anyone would have guessed or even hoped before the year started. So lets keep it in perspective
we should beat those teams i think you miss the point here

Not win every game, but win the games where the Bengals dominate every facet of the game.
Those fumbles and missed kicks. Unacceptable. Period. Shayne Graham is a choker. He’s never made a kick that actually mattered. The Bengals did everything they could to lose this game. The Raiders did very little to win it. These are the games that ultimately mean something in the NFL. THe Bengals have failed miserably in two this season.

you only think we should beat these teams because we won alot of our first games
if we had lost to the ravens and steelers this would be a good effort
Dude, we were facing arguably the worst franchise in pro football…and we lost. And this is nothing new, we barely beat another terrible team in Cleveland and we lost against the very beatable Denver team.
Say what you want, but they should have taken care of business. All that talk about being SB contenders…what a joke, just like the Bungles.

Gentlemen,
I am terribly dissapointed in the outcome of today’s Footing-Ball competition, but I remain confident that the team fielded by the St. Paul Brown’s Reform School for Misguided Youth will learn from their mistakes and will emerge stronger for having lost in such a ridiculous fashion. Go, Bengal-Tigers! Go!

That had trap game written all over it.
Cincy had 2 big back to back wins and then played out west….sound familiar.
This team is awful out west.
And is awful when favored. We were favored against the Browns, almost lost. Favored in this game, lost. Favored against Houston, lost. Favored against Denver, lost.
Underdogs against Baltimore and Steelers (twice each). Underdogs against Chicago, Green Bay, won both of those.
Bad team when favored. Bad team out west.
But
why can’t they play against bad teams?

I just think Bratkowski is an awful coordinator.
The defense wasn’t that bad. The players didn’t execute (5 fumbles).
You said exactly what I was thinking
Brat sucks. he’s conservative when we need to step on the other teams throats early, then he gets trigger happy late when we still have a lead and three timeouts.

Caldwell
Doesn’t have enough sense to cover up inside his own twenty? What the hell?Trade his dumb ass.
We were running like Ced was still in there.
Sure, Scott ripped off a sixty-one yarder, but besides that … we ran for one-to-three yards, or most often negative yards. And we kept running. I understand the game plan, but hand off after hand off, then punt after punt—the game got away from us. And Oakland clawed back. Then Caldwell … clutch catcher before, but not so much on the return game, huh? Where was Scott?!
You must be a steelers fan.
Which means that loss to kc was great.

Bengals at 9-7
Bengals prediction for the season after watching them lose to Oakland: 9-7 and no playoffs (like every year) w/ losses to Cleveland, Minnesota, San Diego, and New York Jets; wins against Detroit and Kansas City. From 7-2 to obscurity.
by CincyBengalsFan25 on Nov 22, 2009 7:52 PM EST reply actions
I don't think so.
This team plays poorly when favored, against bad teams. They play pretty well when they’ve got something to prove.
AP Recap:
The Bengals scored touchdowns on two of their first three drives, but managed only three more points the rest of the way. They were done in by three lost fumbles, eight penalties and a missed field goal.
The biggest fumbles were by fullback Jeremi Johnson at the Oakland 15 and poised to add on to a 17-10 lead and the one by Caldwell. Shayne Graham also missed a 37-yard field goal in the third quarter.
It looks like Mr. Franchise is not a very kicker.

by Pastor Allen on Nov 22, 2009 7:55 PM EST up reply actions
It was definitely a letdown
We-re 0 For Oakland to date. I blame the turnovers and the playcalling even late when we still had the lead. We should have used Leonard and not JJ as the change of pace. We should not have been throwing on second down with the lead in the 4th. Caldwell’s fumble may have been the icing on the cake, but JJ’s fumble gave a Raiders team who started slow in the second half new life. I will give Gradkowski credit. We may not have had one sack, but B-Grad showed the decision making skills of an actual NFL QB. He ran out of the pocket to escape pressure and threw the ball away when he had nothing.
by Danimal, Destroyer of Worlds on Nov 22, 2009 7:54 PM EST reply actions
Gradkowski didn't have a very good game.
He was mediocre, but he won. He made the plays on the last drive, and he found Morgan Trent stumbling around on that touchdown heave. He threw 2 balls that should have been picked before that.
I’ll maintain for the rest of the year that this was a gift-wrapped game for the Raiders.
I didn't say he had a great or even good game
But he did make smart decisions.

Isin’t it weird that 2 of the most improbable outcomes of the season involved Larry Johnson? He leaves Kansas City and Kansas beats Pittsburgh, and his new team, our beloved Bungles lose to Oakland? He seems to have bad energy or something. Apperently our locker room is not as strong as we thought.

Not great, but not the end of the world either
We beat ourselves in this one,Missed Field goal after 6 attempts in the redzone,we got another shot after a roughing the passer penalty and still couldnt execute,JJ fumble..why was he running the ball? Also plays like Ocho’s false start erasing a 9 yd gain on 3rd and 1 that resulted in a failed 3rd and 6,and ultimately Caldwells fumble…just poor execution today but its not the end of the world. We will bounce back next week against Cleveland.
Give Caldwell a break
The guy has been pretty much clutch all year,Ok he isnt a great returner, but he was called on and on this occasion made a mistake, yes ball handling is a basic fundamental of the game but, jeez mistakes happen…trade him?whoever said that needs to get a grip. Another thing..It was good to see Ocho giving him encouragement on the sideline…anyone remember that game in 02 I think when chad let the ball go through his hands that killed the game in Indy,we all see how he bounced back after that. That moment on the sideline still gives me confidence for the season.
Caldwell looked very uneasy on the sideline following that play.
That may have been the ultimate deciding factor, but JJ’s fumble was definitely a key turning point.
by Danimal, Destroyer of Worlds on Nov 22, 2009 8:41 PM EST up reply actions
Coaching staff deserves some of the blame for Caldwell’s fumble. He has been terrible returning kickoffs this season. You’d think somebody on our coaching staff could notice that.

well thats Marvins fault if you wanna get down to it
we have larry and we only used him for 2 plays.Scott is a great back but Marvin did not need to give him that many carries.
This team beat the eagles earlier in the year
They have it in them to turn good teams over,we are not anywhere near the level where we can start to overlook anyone
Steelers fan here...and a big Marvin Lewis fan, too....
I’ve been picking the Bengals as the most improved team in the league all year….
and they’re still gonna win the division and probably go deep into the playoffs….
so get off the ledge. In a 16 game season, you almost always lose a game or two that you should win. It ain’t the end of the world.
Honestly, a lot of you have to learn how to be a good winnner, and – now that your team is back among the elite – you also have to learn again how to be a good loser. You’re still in first place, and will be undefeated in the division.
Tomorrow is a work day, even though it will suck for both Steeler and Bengal fans, but at least the beer’s cold, and I’m gonna drown my sorrows. It sucks when you lose to a lousy team.
Good luck the rest of the way.
I would kill everyone in this room for a drop of sweet beer.

The Chiefs have been gearing up all season. we have had a revolving door for players coming in and going out. The fruits of the players hard work is showing. We may not be the mighty Steelers, but we sure gave you guys a game, and you will remeber November 22nd 2009.
Scott could have been spotted more,LJs first carry was nothing but he looked pretty good on the 2nd
surprised he didnt get in the game afterwards
Scott's great
but inconsistent. Too many plays go for negative yards to keep a drive going.
Hey fellas, I got a new word from you.
It’s PERSPECTIVE.
Let’s look at the facts here: We’re 7-3. 1st place in the AFCN. 1 game up on the Steelers, and we hold the tiebreaker. We’re tied for 2nd in the AFC. 5 of our last 6 games are against teams that are not likely to be playoff-bound. We lost another let-down game. We’ve got a smart coach and a team that’s hungry. We’re gonna be OK. Yes, this one stings a little (especially cause I’ve got some friends that are Raiders fans that are giving me the business) but some of you fellas make it sound like we got blown out and we’re going to lose to the Browns by 40. Let’s keep our heads on straight.
"If it wasn't this, it'd be something else."
The way we are playing against bad teams, it’s not that encouraging that we have to face 5 teams that are not going to the playoffs…

While that may be true...
I’d still rather play games against Cleveland, Detroit, and KC than New England, Indianapolis, and New Orleans.
"If it wasn't this, it'd be something else."
I hear you
Just saying we haven’t looked good against crappy teams and I don’t know why, and the coaching staff doesn’t seem to know either.
by pedro_oliveira on Nov 22, 2009 10:23 PM EST up reply actions
Weird, isn't it?
I’m hoping that this one irritates Marvin such that he’ll light the fire this week.
"If it wasn't this, it'd be something else."
45-10 against the bears didn’t look good? and don’t tell me the bears aren’t a crappy team, because then i know you don’t watch football.
i'm going to go america all over your ass!

They are definately not as bad as the Cleveland-Oakland-Chiefs trio.
by pedro_oliveira on Nov 23, 2009 11:37 AM EST up reply actions
If you say you are done dont come back when we are 9-2
I blame Marvin. If B Scott is the best returner leave him in.
I think Marvin should be blamed for letting Caldwell return kickoffs, he hasn’t looked good all season long. That being said, I think Scott wasn’t an option there since he must have been tired after the heavy workload he had today.
by pedro_oliveira on Nov 22, 2009 10:20 PM EST up reply actions
I agree. Scott had to have been tired
But Caldwell isn’t the answer. I’ve been saying that all year. I’d much prefer Cosby or Purify to return kicks.
"If it wasn't this, it'd be something else."
Absolutely
Let’s hope this disaster forces the coaches’ hands and they make a change.
by pedro_oliveira on Nov 22, 2009 10:25 PM EST up reply actions
Caldwell returns the kick
because we need Scott fresh in the OT.
But if Leonard can just make that first down at the 2 minute mark nobody is returning kicks.
Wow, everyone.
Oh, noes. The Bengals slipped on a silver and black banana peel.
They are of course going to lose out and go 7-9. Give me a break. Any if you think Marvin didn’t knock some heads in the locker room? Watch the “Be a f***ing pro” speech again.
They’re going to take today’s loss out on Cleveland next week. They’ll do work.
by Craig Conrad on Nov 22, 2009 10:57 PM EST via mobile reply actions
After what happened against Cleveland, you’d think Marvin would have done a better job getting the team ready against a crappy Oakland team.
How are we supposed to believe we are going to be that much better against Cleveland next week?

welcome back
you post a lot more when there is something to bitch about.
You must be a treasure to live with.
I guess a winning record brings out freaks.
Very few teams in the NFL don't lose at least one game to a team they should beat.
I’m disappointed as much as anyone, but we weren’t going to win out. The team has been taking care of business nearly all season, I don’t think we have reason to panic just yet. I would have figured Marvin would use Pittsburgh’s loss early in our game to drill not playing down into the players’ heads, but the blame for this one goes from players all the way through the coaching staff. Bratkowski called a ridiculous game.
I still think they come home to PBS on Sunday, do work and have all the outer fringe fans slopping down the Kool-Aid once again. They most likely won’t blow the Browns out of the water, but they win on Sunday. Decisively or not. It puts them 6-0 in the division. Bear in mind, we didn’t lose any ground in the AFCN yesterday because all four teams lost. By a total of nine points. To three bad teams.

it might shock others if we beat the vikings, but i won’t be surprised; we love to pick off favre, and marvin dominates the nfc north.

I agree
From what we’ve seem so far, we have a better chance of beating the Vikes than we do of beating the Lions. Heck, I’m actually expecting us to play really well and beat the Vikings.

i think there’s a difference between oakland and cleveland/detroit (detroit might currently be closing the gap a bit, but it’s still there). oakland has a fairly talented team (asomugha, seymour, mcfadden, to name a few) that is a lot like the bengals pre-marvin; that is, they have plenty of guys who can play, but they don’t really have the people in place to help them reach their potential, so they’ll get a few surprise wins (even with jamarcus russell at quarterback, who isn’t half the quarterback gradkowski is, and i know that’s not saying much), but overall their record won’t be good. the lions and browns are still teams against whom you can commit three turnovers and win; it’ll be sloppy, perhaps, but still a win.

Lets just pretend we lost a close one 2 Pit and pounded the Raiders and wed be feelin great
same record and now we suck, cmon guys
agreed
Come Monday, Marvin Lewis and the rest of the coaching staff will have moved on to the next opponent. Except for emphasizing ball protection. Seriously, Andre Caldwell was waving the pigskin around as badly as Ochocinco does. If he’s looking for a role model in this respect, he needs to look elsewhere.
PAIN
Damn it all to hell. What a downer for a Sunday.
I have but one question. WHY ARE WE SCARED TO THROW THE BALL?? The Bengals were running the ball and milking clock like we had already won after we went up 14-0 in the first half.
Terrible turnovers, scared playcalling, and predictable defense.
The only good news is that Pitt choked to KC and B-More lost to Indy. Gotta find a way to get over this one quick.
Hi fans it Brandon Roy.
And ME.....LaMarcus Aldridge
HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!
God that made my day. now I care more about the Butthole Bungles losing than i do my team winning. Steelers are fine. You can have the division and lose early in the playoffs. When we get troy back it’s friggin on. This is 05 allll over again!

I just wanted to kick you guys while you're down
last week you were sure superbowl locks and now the attitude is that you aren’t winning anymore games. We at BTSC still have hope and that thing you lack called expectations. Write this down, the Steelers will go further than the Bengals if we win our next game. If we don’t then you’ll take it. So sunday night awaits. Nice KO return BTW

I can't find video of it, but...
I’m remembering a missed block on 91’s fumble return that I think would have put him in the end zone.
Anyone?
I guess a winning record brings out freaks.
Don't run and hide just yet:
after the 2 losses this season, the team responded with great win streaks.
When you’re 7-2, you can afford a letdown. Give our boyz a break, they played a bad game. Either Benson comes back, or LJ gets goin, which will give us our power run game back. So quit your bitchin…this loss will be a re-focus point for the team. They’re gonna be pissed and take it out on the Browns, which will be quite satisfying.
8-8? 7-9?? Seriously? So we’re gonna finish 1-5? or 0-6???? L-O-L at you, the red scratch marks where your bandwagon tatoos used to reside standout painfully.
3 yards and a pile of dust
we have to slaughter the Brownies and the lions

but I do feel that this may be a game were the boys realize that any game wont be easy and penalties and turnovers will kill us. AND DONT LET JEREMI JOHNSON RUN AT ALL!!!!

I don't know man
This team needs to prove to us that they can beat a terrible team. Right now, when they see a mediocre team, they play like a mediocre team.

i have to stick by 12-4. it’s the prediction i made in may, and i’m no good if i don’t stand by my word.

12-4 way back then?
kudos…
man, I think I did the “if they and if we” and came up with somewhere between 6 and 9 wins… even though I was sure the defense would be improved, I just couldn’t get my brain around beating the Ravens and Steelers 4 times. No way, no how. No way, no how = yes way, whoo hoo! now.
I certainly hope to exceed that 9!
I guess a winning record brings out freaks.
