Open Thread: Sunday Night Football. Pittsburgh Steelers (6-4) at Baltimore Ravens (5-5)

With Cincinnati completing their six-game division sweep earlier in a 16-7 win over the Cleveland Browns, the Bengals and their fans will sit patiently and watch the Pittsburgh Steelers to see if they gain any ground. Tonight's Sunday Night Game presents an entertaining game with critical implications on both the AFC North and the AFC Wild Card race. If the Ravens beat the Steelers, then the Bengals will have a three-game lead, when including tie-breaking wins by the Bengals against both teams, over the Steelers and Ravens with five games left on the season. If the Steelers win, then Pittsburgh keeps pace with the Bengals.

Either way. Tonight's game should be entertaining if you love the NFL, with two powerhouses that typically play tough against each other. Go Ravens.

The Ravens should beat the Steelers down

A rookie QB who has never played on the road against a tough defensive front like this. Should be a recipe for disaster for Shitzburg. Ray Rice just keeps getting better and he should be able to get open underneath for Flacco all day without Polomalu.

Rodney Harrison does not "believe" in the Bengals...

or so he stated on the NBC Pre-Game show. He’s bagging on them for not blowing out the Browns, despite the fact Benson is out and the Bengals were starting a rookie sharing time with a RB signed two weeks ago. 200+ yards rushing is not good enough to beat the Colts, Chargers, or Patriots.

I dunno, I would think a strong running game and a stingy defense is THE way to beat those teams…

I wonder if Rodney Harrison “believed” in David Tyree pryor to giving up that catch in the Super Bowl. Dousche.

In contrast, Tony Dungy was "sold" on the Bengals..

simply making the point that they are winning despite not playing their best football. I think he knows a thing or two about championship runs.

Who has a more relevant opinion on that show?

It’s obviously Tony Dungy, who’s been a very successful coach for decades, while Rodney Harrison is spoiled from high scoring teams he was on in New England. He’s an assclown.

I like how he said the Titans can't beat the Colts

Won’t ever happen he said, it just might jackass! The Texans, Ravens, and Pats all almost beat them, they are not gods

by St. Esiason on Nov 29, 2009 8:33 PM EST up reply actions

I think that our game plan will change considerably for Minnesota and San Diego

At the same time, we can still expect our defense to hold opponents – regardless of who we play – to a respectable total.

by whodeyla on Nov 29, 2009 8:31 PM EST up reply actions

I agree

But we’ve proven to be a clock controlling, defensive team this season. It seems the coaches are happy to hold the ball and run up the clock instead of airing it out all the time against lesser opponents.

by whodeyla on Nov 29, 2009 8:34 PM EST up reply actions

Thats all well and good against the Raiders and Browns

But what about when a team scores on us like the Texans did, which will happen eventually, what the hell will we do? Run it 40 times in a row?

by St. Esiason on Nov 29, 2009 8:36 PM EST up reply actions

RE:

But you have to consider the game plan. The Raiders and Browns sport two of the worst rushing defenses in the league.

But let’s face facts. Play-calling or game planning or whatever. The passing offense isn’t there right now. So the team has to play to their strengths. They did that against the Browns AND Oakland — who was largely ineffective until the last minute of the game (I know, that’s kind of important……. I guess. :)

Blogger at CincyJungle.com -- SB Nation Cincinnati Bengals blog.

by Josh Kirkendall on Nov 29, 2009 8:38 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah its effective running the ball that much until you get behind

And your passing game is so rusty and out of sync they can’t get going for three plays in a row

by St. Esiason on Nov 29, 2009 8:40 PM EST up reply actions

Yea, I agree there.

Then again, it’s not like the Bengals have ever played from that far behind this year. Even against Texas, we were winning 17-14. And there were still 17 minutes left in the game when Texas scored their 28th and last point.

But how do we get some rhythm in this passing game? We get that working, we’re up there with the best teams in the league, IMHO.

Blogger at CincyJungle.com -- SB Nation Cincinnati Bengals blog.

by Josh Kirkendall on Nov 29, 2009 8:49 PM EST up reply actions

Good point Josh

The reality is we haven’t been blown out yet, and through 11 games the pattern is that we won’t get blown out. There’s a reason our defense is ranked where it is. But we need to have an effective pass rush to stop teams from passing the ball down field like Oakland did last week. Our offense has proven that they can go down the field and score at the end of the game, because we’ve done it several times already this season. And our defense has not allowed a touchdown on an opening drive since last year and they’ve only allowed 6 points on opening drives this year. With our offense putting up points early, we can then run the ball and control the clock, relying on our defense to win the game. That’s what wins in the playoffs with the cold and bad weather…

Today

You know, against Cleveland today, I was probably as confident that the Bengals would win more than I have during any game this year. Beating Cleveland is awesome. I work in Dayton and there’s several Browns fans coworkers.

I work in the computer department and this week, I denied ClevelandBrowns.com and had the page redirect to Bengals.com. They were “amused.” Heh. Got ’em.

Hate the browns myself. If it’s brown flush well you know.

AND Congratulations on the sweep of the North. IMO your current team is a lot like the Ravens & Steelers. Good Defense, balanced offense and you play together as a team through injuries. I see this year the Bengals even play to the level of their competition.

Went to the Bengals-Browns epic

shitfest. Sat in the first row in the northeast corner of the endzone. Some observations…
1. Not impressed with this years’ Ben-Gals crop. Don’t get me wrong, I’d take any one of them, but still way too many butterfaces.
2. That Bengals o-line was terrible on pass protection and Palmer looked way too skittish out there.
3. Lavern Coles sucks. Gator arms.
4. I hate TV timeouts.
5. The drive back was a nightmare. Between just escaping the parking garage, the normal slowdown on I-75 before the Norwood lateral, and then the accident near Rt 63 (and two guys standing OUTSIDE their stopped cars in bumper-to-bumper traffic, it took us nearly 2 1/2 hours to get home to South Dayton area. It was about a 50 minute drive there.

The Bengals did get pressure when they blitzed...

Zimmer may have to work blitzes into the game plan more often. Still, the Bengals secondary is pretty money when they drop 7 and play straight up coverage.

why didn’t they call the blatant pass interference when carson threw to purify in the end zone? why’d they call intentional grounding when carson got hit as he threw? i don’t know why the officiating was so terrible and one-sided today, i just know that it was. it was easily one of the most poorly officiated games i have ever seen. they couldn’t even get the ball placed before the offenses were ready to snap; they stopped play at least three times that i saw today because the zebras were out of sync.

Bengals only need to go 3-2

to win the division.

that's the good news...

the bad news… they are only 2-3 out of division :(

I guess a winning record brings out freaks.

Ironically

Both of those wins came against NFC North foes

by Danimal, Destroyer of Worlds on Nov 29, 2009 11:51 PM EST up reply actions

now that

would be a great sweep…

I guess a winning record brings out freaks.

by supergrover on Nov 29, 2009 11:52 PM EST up reply actions

And we got NFC North the next two weeks

Lions…then the Vikings.

Every game on the schedule is winnable

SD could give us some trouble considering it is a west coast game

I'm worried about the Vikings tho

Adrian Peterson and Lord Favre…tough combo

AP worries me

Favre on the other hand, we’ve played well against before

the Bengals might be _their_ trap game

they haven’t really had a real “down” game. Even Indy has… just people coughed up the lead.

I guess a winning record brings out freaks.

by supergrover on Nov 29, 2009 11:55 PM EST up reply actions

but let's hope they don't worry about MN yet...

there is a Michigan team that needs addressed first.

Just take away Calvin Johnson

Actually the Lions have looked somewhat interesting the last couple weeks. But losing that TE (Pettigrew) for the season really hurts their offense. He looks nasty.

Give the Lions a couple years….they have some great young pieces in place on offense. If they can continue to improve the o-line and d-line, they could really be a factor.

And say the Bengals go 2-3

Steelers would still have to go 5-0 to win the division……I love looking at the numbers likes

Looking at the Steelers schedule

I see wins at home against the Raiders and Clowns. Then they close with three interesting matchups: Packers, Ravens and Dolphins. I think the Dolphins game will be tougher than anticipated.

I agree

The Dolphins will likely be playing a spoiler role

for the record...

it was supposed to be “tights”, but her spelling is such shit…

btw, I hope I didn’t spell THAT bad when I was nine.

I guess a winning record brings out freaks.

LOL

The other odd thing was the body jewelry wish. I don’t know many 9 year olds who wear body jewelry.

I certainly didn’t spell that bad when I was 9.

Sadly, I know people my age(I’m 27) who spell that poorly.

Actually, we should probably be more concerned about the Ravens

They are now 6-5 and have a better division record than the Steelers. Also an easier remaining schedule: Packers, Lions, Bears, Steelers, Raiders.

Hmm last game is in Oakland….we know about those trap games on the coast…:)

we also match up better against the ravens and would have less trouble dispensing of them in a 3rd game playoff scenario.

i'm going to go america all over your ass!

Root for Pittsburgh in week 16?

Pitt or Baltimore in week 16

That’s like asking me which one of my nuts I’d rather be kicked in.

I’ll root for the tie.

With the way we are playing now

you need only concern yourselves with Indy & NE in the playoffs.
