Don't "Rush" to judgment...
Feel free to disagree with me, but I just want to put this out there. Keep in mind, even I’m not sure the Bengals deserve this much credit, but they’ve proven a lot of people wrong within the past year so hear me out. Jump with me…
In the past two weeks, we’ve seen a lot of running and well….a whole lot more running. I for one am absolutely thrilled to have a team that can roll out a “punch you in the mouth”, “bloody nose”, “smashmouth”, “AFC North trench warfare” kinda O-Line, and D-Line for that matter. Most of the comments I’ve read, plus unwarranted “booing” at the stadium (while winning???), don’t lead me to believe you enjoy this formula, despite the fact that it has brought this division three Championships in the past decade. It has been embarrassing to watch the Bengals inability to stop-the-run in the 4th-quarter year after year. To return the favor in 2009 has been glorious. With all that said, it’s not the point of my post.
The NFL is both a copy-cat league and a league of deception. Clearly, we’ve witnessed the Bengals Version 2009 copy-cat the Steelers and Ravens formulas of success. Marvin Lewis did his time with both of those coaching staffs and has finally compiled his ideal roster here in the Nasty Nati. Now I’m going to throw something wild at you:
Could the Bengals possibly be deceiving its abused fanbase and remaining opponents with its “boring” ground attack? Here’s the evidence:
Exhibit A:
With three straight weeks of the NFL’s lower-tiered Rush Defenses of this 2009 season, I believe Marvin Lewis saw an opportunity. Not only could the Bengals rest their battle-tested starting RB, but begin to groom the likes of Turn-Hard Bernard Scott, Brian Nike-Air Leonard, Andre the Giant Smith and recent acquisition Scary Larry Johnson.
The 2009 Bengal Offense all starts with the Power Run Game. If they can run, the Play-Action Pass will be effective. If you can’t run, face it, you ain’t foolin’ anybody. Palmer is deadly with a power run game. With seemingly endless combinations of O-Lineman, and a stable of tailbacks, the time is now for “toying” around with all the new “toys”.
Exhibit B:
So much of an NFL player’s week is consumed by film-review that it makes the job that much more enviable to me. You can hit the sled, run 40’s, and run drills all you want, but these football players spend a ridiculous amount of time in the film room.
With virtually a month of 2-to-1:Run-to-Pass Ratio, the Bengals are limiting Pass plays for opposing defenses to review. The Vikings and Chargers could seemingly review the Larry-Bernard Duo, yet Benson comes back on a tear and LJ and Scott don’t even get a snap. Could they possibly be withholding pass plays to keep opponents off balance? Could they be taking advantage of weak rush defenses? Could they possibly be doing what seemingly every team does in the preseason (work out of base packages and not put anything on film for your Week 1 game)????
--
Alright, let’s face it, no Bengal team in recent memory deserves credit of Exhibit B. However, with respect to Exhibit A, most Bengal teams in recent memory have spent November and December working on “next year”, our favorite battle-cry. Again, I’m not sure they deserve this much credit. I do know the following:
--If you can run it down their throats, Play-Action’s a bitch.
--Carson Palmer is sick rolling out of Play-Action.
--It’s not often the Bengals have the roster/ability to run this well to set up Play-Action.
--You have to be able to Run the ball in December/January.
--We swept our division.
--We’re 8-3.
--You’re tired of reading this fanpost.
--We’re 8-3.
--We’re 8-3.
--We. Are. Eight. And. Three.

Nail on the Head
I think you hit the nail on the head as far as game planning goes. We are going up against some opponents with weak rush defenses and we are taking advantage by dominating the clock by controlling the run. We don’t have to put a ton of points on the board because these teams have weak offenses.
However, I don’t think that we are necessarily trying to trick future opponents as much as we are taking advantage of our strengths against the opponents weaknesses.
This is our year!
thanks 9orbust
just a thought, so i thought i’d share it and see if i couldn’t stir up some debate.

not many fans do, like i said, I’m not sure they deserve credit for this hair-brained idea, but we’ll just wait and see what happens.

I think it might work like that by chance and circumstance, not by premeditation.

If Carson can remember how to throw the ball after all this running..

Carson is legit. I am just worried about his in-game-timing.

I honestly think that these past few weeks
they have been practicing running the ball more than passing. Giving more time on the run and getting the blocking schemes and such down perfect and neglecting the pass a little. They will practice more passing schemes for the Vikes, Bolts and the Jets. Well, I hope so.
thanks groovy

I think we are taking advantage of opponents weakness'
Let teams see us running through our opponents like a dose of the trots! Let them bring 8 men in the box and still fail to stop our run,let them fly to the RB and hit them with the playaction over the top,let them do whatever,we just need to worry about how we do and we will be fine.
Choose Run,choose Bobbie, cook and whit knocking you off the ball, chose the blitz and get stung on the hot route, choose to think of us as the same ol bengals and choose to get knocked tha fuck out, choose to stop Ced and we’ll give you Scott,Larry or Leonard,Choose to sleep on Palmer and let him turn into your D’s worst nightmare,Choose to try and run on us choose to try and pass, either way you get put on your ass. I choose Who Dey,I choose Bengals.LETS DO THIS
I've wanted Brat replaced for years, but...
…right now, I don’t think he has the personnel to work with. The o-line is obviously struggling with pass-blocking, and with Henry out, our best deep threat is gone. Chad is getting up there in years, and most of our other WRs—Coles, Cosby, Purify—are better suited for slot/possession stuff. Caldwell has the speed for it, but he’s still developing.
If Simpson doesn’t get playing time by the end of this season, I think we need to draft a deep-threat WR, just to balance things out.
I don’t think it’s a good idea to let a QB who hasn’t done much (if anything) for over a year and a half focus on handing off and then expect him to be able to revert back to 3 years ago when you get to the playoffs. To have a good passing attack takes practice. Not just practice-field practice, but real game-time practice. Carson has missed way too much time in the past few years, and has too few familiar faces to throw to, for this ‘strategy’ to work.
Remember the effect of Keith Rivers...
With Keith Rivers sitting on the sideline, Brandon Johnson has to start. Domino down the depth chart, and you have to activate a Dan Skuta or Tom Nelson to fulfill Special Team duties. When Keith Rivers returns, you can activate another one of the Passing threats, and start to toy around with a Chase Coffman or Jerome Simpson.
So i neglected that element, i didn’t think about it until later. Also, the team spent the whole offseason using Benson in Pass Protection, so of course there would be a rocky transition btwn LJ and BScott assuming blitz pickup. And it seems no one gives credit to the disruptiveness of one Shaun Rogers. He simply ruins OLines, luckily we won’t have to deal with another behemoth like him for the rest of this season.
Lets see how things go this week with Benson back.

Carson and throwing
Hey let,s face it, Carson has not looked good at all in the pocket passing, hes had to step up , throw off the wrong foot, looks like he is very hurried. I think you need to throw something in to keep the timing what it needs to be. The Saints and the Colts and the Chargers will throw up a quick 30 points in a heart beat. Can we keep up with that? They also have very good defenses as well. Just thought I,d throw that out there.

Watching Randy Moss Last Night
He’s “old”. But still a playmaker. I think if every team believes we are run first, then Palmer is free to audible when they bring in run stopping packages.
I think you’re right about pass blocking and Benson though, H-D. Carson has not had good backfield blocking for the last couple of games, and that accounts for a least another second or two before having to release the ball. It’s another reason Andre needs to be ready to play in the last 1/4 of the season and into the playoffs.
That’s right. The playoffs. I mean, after the first round bye week to cull the stragglers.
I like Woody Hays...........
He said that when you throw the ball 3 things can happen and 2 of the are bad. If you have the luxury of 4 good running backs who are good in their own situations then run it, run it and run it some more until you can’t run it. I don’t care if Carson has zero attempts and Benson, LJ, Scott and Leonard have 20 carries, 75-80 yards and a TD each. Obviously that will never happen but make them come up and stop it and pass it when they do. If we only had one starting caliber RB and a backup this would not be an option but we have 4 guys who can each share the load in situational plays. Like Coach Boone said. “It is like Novocaine. It works every time”.
If we can make the playoffs we will be underdogs every week and we havn’t lost a game where were underdogs yet this season. It is the Lions, Chiefs and Jets that make me nervous.
