Open Thread: Pittsburgh Steelers at Denver Broncos

We don't typically do open threads for other games. Then again, other games haven't exactly affected the Cincinnati Bengals. Here's the scenario. If the Steelers lose to the Broncos, then lose to the Bengals, Cincinnati is 7-2 while Pittsburgh falls to 5-4. The Bengals would essentially have a three-game lead on the division with seven games remaining in the season.

Just as importantly, the Bengals need the Broncos to beat the Steelers so it helps the other tie-breakers -- record against common opponents and record in the conference.

Now, that's the fluffy feel-good scenario. But that's why we're having an open thread for Monday's game between Pittsburgh and the Broncos.

Wouldn't that be nice to be 7-2 and a 3 game lead in the division.

Hey,

Where is the sideline ref looking at when marking the punts that go out of bounds? I always wonder this.

by WHYUS!! on Nov 9, 2009 9:35 PM EST reply actions

Go Steelers!

I’m not thinking of just winning the division. I want home field and a first round bye. For that to happen Denver needs to lose more games.

The Bengals will take care of the Steelers, they don’t need Denver’s help.

Man, I've seen some ridiculous missed calls on the Pittsburgh offensive line

On the big runs by Mendenhall there have been blatant holds and blocks in the back on the edge that sprung him free.

by jsl413 on Nov 9, 2009 10:45 PM EST reply actions

Correct me if I'm wrong

But if cincy wins at Pittsburgh next week then we clinch the division. That would make us at least 5-1 in the division, with Pittsburgh having two losses as well as Baltimore. And even if Cleveland wins out we should still end up with more total wins and at least a split against them…who dey?

by whodeyla on Nov 9, 2009 11:37 PM EST via mobile reply actions

Not so fast, my friend.

Overall record is the first decider. If Pittsburgh finishes 13-3, and we finish 12-4, even though we go 5-1, they still win the division.

If we finish with the same record, then it’s division record, then common opponents record. That’s where this one hurts, since Denver beat us and they beat Denver. Beat them next week though, and it’s largely irrelevant, given the relative ease of our upcoming schedule.

I remembered this as I clicked post

We did beat Chicago, and Chicago beat Pittsburgh, so we’ve got that game to cancel out Denver.

"If it wasn't this, it'd be something else."

by ZJiff30 on Nov 10, 2009 12:02 AM EST up reply actions

The Chicago game was non conference so it doesn't really matter.

After overall record, and Division Record and head to head it is conference record.

by St. Esiason on Nov 10, 2009 3:52 AM EST up reply actions

not for division lead.

It’s head-to-head, div record, then common opponents, then conference record.

"If it wasn't this, it'd be something else."

by ZJiff30 on Nov 10, 2009 10:00 AM EST up reply actions

it's head-to-head first, then div record

in the case of two team ties.

Tonight’s results might not be so bad for the optimistic bengals fan. If the bengals can somehow win next week, that would put this team in the running for the #2 seed in the afc playoffs.

Still, I don’t see how the bengals beat pittsburgh, who have polamalu back. It will be tough. A loss against pitt isn’t the worst though, and the division title is still a strong possibility.

by cokane on Nov 10, 2009 12:13 AM EST up reply actions

troy polamalu is not jesus. i know because marvin lewis is jesus.

that being said, it’s nice to go into a game against pittsburgh and know that things don’t fall apart if we lose.

i'm going to go america all over your ass!

by Raging Clue on Nov 10, 2009 12:25 AM EST up reply actions

never said he was

And he’s not the best secondary guy in the NFL. But when you beat a team by the skin of your teeth as the bengals did, and they were missing a starter, and now you’re playing in their stadium… Well it doesn’t look good.

Actually looking again at the schedules… If the bengals want to win the AFC north, they had better win next week. The best teams pitt plays after that are: Baltimore twice, Green Bay, and Miami. Pitt could go through that without losing!

by cokane on Nov 10, 2009 12:59 AM EST up reply actions

as could the bengals, who have one of the easiest schedules in the nfl after the steelers game; the only team that poses a legitimate threat against the bengals after the steelers is minnesota, but marvin is undefeated against the nfc north and the bengals love to pick off favre. san diego is overrated as usual, the jets are in that same category, and the other four games are basically scrimmages. i’d bet baltimore takes one against pittsburgh.

the bengals won by the skin of their teeth despite playing like absolute crap, and they won by taking advantage of opportunities. one starter does not a game make.

i'm going to go america all over your ass!

by Raging Clue on Nov 10, 2009 1:10 AM EST up reply actions

vikings, jets and san diego are away games

which are never easy except against the worst of nfl teams. Bengals could easily lose all 3. Even playing against the “scrimmage” teams is not always easy. Big upsets happen every week in the NFL.

The two schedules aren’t close. Pittsburgh, unless they start losing like crazy, will be favored in every single game for the rest of the season. Cincinnati will be favored in 4 or 5 of the remaining 7.

You can talk all you want about teams being “overrated” (what does that even mean?) but the Jets beat New England and San Diego won @Houston, and Oakland upset Philadelphia. So nothing’s guaranteed, and you never know how the matchups will work out, or which team will get lucky on a big play.

by cokane on Nov 10, 2009 1:21 AM EST up reply actions

Favored?

The Bengals have been favored twice all year and they post a 6-2 record. Pittsburgh has probably been favored all year and they post a 6-2 record. The spread means absolutely nothing. Any team can win on any day. That’s usually how it goes.

Your same argument as to why the Bengals can lose out can be applied to the Steelers as well. Both Pittsburgh and Cincy have comparable schedules going forward but at this point the schedule don’t mean a thing. And Cincy has played much better on the road this year than they have at home so far, so those away games are dangerous but very winnable.

NO reason to believe that Cincy can’t beat Pitt this week in this season.

Marv, Zimmer and ALexander need to get to work ( I hope Brat knows what work is )

by bengal fan from new york on Nov 10, 2009 7:42 AM EST up reply actions

away games this season have been easier for the bengals than home games have; they are undefeated on the road, so there’s not much reason to worry about them being away games.

being favored has only to do with the way a bunch of gambling junkies in vegas view your team, nothing else, so what’s the point in bringing that up? the ravens were favored both times they played the bengals, how’d that work out for them?

it’s simple; a team is overrated when, like san diego, they are constantly referred to as super bowl contenders despite playing like also-rans. i hold no stock in the jets beating new england, as that’s a division game. san diego won at houston when houston couldn’t figure out who it wanted to be, and oakland upset philadelphia before remembering that they’re the raiders.

besides, all your argument does is nullify your original point about the ease of pittsburgh’s schedule, which is what i was doing anyway.

i'm going to go america all over your ass!

by Raging Clue on Nov 10, 2009 8:47 AM EST up reply actions

being favored does not equal winning

but i guess you’d have to have brains to figure that out. It does mean the bengals schedule is harder

by cokane on Nov 11, 2009 12:10 AM EST up reply actions

this really isn’t worth explaining to you (since you’d “have to have brains to figure it out”), but point spreads don’t have anything to do with how tough a schedule is, only how people in vegas perceive your team to be. you really need to stop contradicting your own arguments if you expect anyone to take you seriously.

i'm going to go america all over your ass!

by Raging Clue on Nov 11, 2009 9:17 AM EST up reply actions

We’ve got as good of a shot as any at beating Pitt right now. that should be obvious. I think we can beat any team in this league, and nobody knows that better than the Steelers.

This is our year!

by Paul Cannon on Nov 10, 2009 1:24 AM EST up reply actions

Yes, the Bengals have done well against the NFC North

So, because of that they have an edge over the Vikings.

The Bengals love to pick off Favre. How many do you think they’ll get and by how much do you think the Bengals will win by?

by Salty on Nov 10, 2009 11:38 AM EST up reply actions

watching the Stellers play tonight

I would say any observer would agree the Bengals are playing better football right now, especially on the lines. If the Steelers had beat us in the first meeting this would be a double digit spread. But the Bengals are just better this year, they’ve got that magic right now. It may not last but right now its enough to beat the Steelers next week.

by FSUBENGAL on Nov 10, 2009 12:54 AM EST reply actions

I agree.

The Steelers won because the Denver offense played worse than I have seen the Bengals offense play at any time this year. Palmer is playing at a much higher level right now than Kyle Orton (or for that matter, any QB not named Brees or Manning) Benson is still kicking it, and our D is ready to take down Big Ben. I feel very optimistic about next week.
