Mock Drafts have us picking...........

I was up late and couldn't sleep + i'm off work so I figured I would check the numerous sites and see what players they have us picking in the 2010 NFL draft. I know its a little early to be talking about this but I tend to enjoy scouting out players as early as possible. In my opinion we could use some players in several spots such as Tight End, Defensive Tackle (someone to go along side peko), Maybe a third corner, A wide receiver(it seems Simpson wont be playing), another safety wouldn't hurt(depending if Roy Dub decides to return), and maybe another Left Tackle (so we could move Whitworth back inside where he is more comfortable). Those were in no particular order. I think DT will be high on the list and depending on how they use Coffman a Tight End may be needed. We seem to have depth at Defensive End, so I wouldn't go there. We are kinda deep at linebacker if we can get Johnson signed to a long term deal but could use another with Dhani getting up in age(Brandon Spikes anyone?). Depending whether we will re-sign Slim is how high we go with WR+with Ocho getting up there and nearing the end of his deal, and if we don't decide to give Shayne Graham his long term deal he wanted, a kicker may be in order. It depends who is there in when we pick we all know that which you never know, I didnt think Rey or MJ would fall to us :) But I like DT Terrence Cody or DT Marvin Austin. For a WR Golden Tate or hometown hero Mardy Gilyard(may get in 2nd round), Possibly S Taylor Mays if he is still around. If we go Tight End a first rounder would be Jermaine Gresham from Oklahoma

I would actually want to try and trade up and get Suh from Nebraska

wouldn’t that be an awesome pick. Suh playing next to Peko. He’s a beast

by WHYUS!! on Dec 11, 2009 8:11 AM EST reply actions

But every team in the league

will likely want to do that and the Bengals don’t have a bucket of extra picks to offer. Suh is going to be the #1 pick or if someone is insane the #2 pick. He won’t be in stripes.

by occams_tiger_teeth on Dec 11, 2009 3:47 PM EST up reply actions

the only way i would trade up would be

to get eric berry if he comes out. dude is going to be sick. and we could use a solid safety.

by brandone on Dec 11, 2009 6:03 PM EST up reply actions

That’s not very likely unless we trade, well, basically an entire draft for him. Ricky Williams part deux? No thanks.

by FriarBob on Dec 11, 2009 8:16 AM EST reply actions

I know, but it would be sweet to have him. He's a force all by himself..

MB is kinda crafty though. (As he would infer himself as) It was an outside the box thought.

by WHYUS!! on Dec 11, 2009 11:52 AM EST up reply actions

Remember

Steve Emtman and Dan Wilkinson? There is no such thing as a guarantee in the draft.

by occams_tiger_teeth on Dec 11, 2009 3:47 PM EST up reply actions

your right

and you can say that about every player in the draft year after year. So if that is the case, why are we having this topic/discussions? And every player talked about here on this post.

by WHYUS!! on Dec 11, 2009 4:27 PM EST up reply actions

well it's an

argument against trading up because to get to #1 or #2 will require mortgaging everything else. Picking a guy rated #15 would require an extra 2nd or 3rd rounder, which sounds more reasonable if it was a player who was undervalued.

Of course this team needs more scouts!

Trevard Lindley is the man

First time I shot her, shot her in the side.
Hard to watch her suffer, but with the second shot she died...

by btcoop71 on Dec 11, 2009 8:23 AM EST reply actions

at the moment his stock is 2nd round but come draft time he should be going in the top 25. The guy is a beast.

Austin or Lupati

… screw the WR… wait till 2nd or 3rd and take Mardy Gilliard

I guess a winning record brings out freaks.

dude, I can't beleive you blew it.

I just told my buddy the other day how cool it is we are not mock drafting in early December, like usual. Last year this time Mel Kiper had DE M. Johnson (our third round pick) as one of the top talents available. Even the experts have no clue this early. That being said, old habits die hard and I enjoy playing GM as much as the next guy. If I was going to Identify a first round need it would be wide receiver or saftey. Simpson may or may not turn out to be OK some day (by ok I mean serviceable 3rd or 4th). WRs take 2 to 3 years to get good (I know what you are going to say Simpson apologists, guys that are worth a damn are good enough to get on the field some) and Chad is not going to age like wine. A dominant saftey like Troy Polamalu or Ed Reed changes a team.

While I like Crocker and Roy W. They are not long term solutions. We need a good FS.

On taking a RB

Although i don’t think we’ll take one in the early rounds it isn’t beyond the realm of possibility. Lewis has turned this team into a run it 40 times throw it 15 times team and Benson isn’t going to last if he doesn’t have two significantly talented back-ups.

Scott is our KR and 2nd RB and he hasn’t shown the ability to remain fit underneath the heavy load of a starter so we do need another top level RB to help spot Benson. I would wager we are going to get a clone of Benson in the later rounds. A Brandon Jacobs type of brusing runner who can punish LBs and CBs who dare to tackle them.

But having another home-run threat would also be very nice. Someone like C J Spiller isn’t out of the realm of possibility because he can run/catch and KR which would allow us to have Scott and Spiller as our changes of pace to Benson. We could have a great backfield like the Cowboys do with Felix Jones, Tashard Choice and Marion Barber III. And as we run the ball so often it would be nice if we loaded that spot up with talent.

Personally i believe we’ll go for another talented RB who’ll be around in the later rounds like we did with Scott.

by Sheffieldbengal on Dec 11, 2009 9:18 AM EST reply actions

I agree on a running back

just not in the top rounds, we have other needs for the top rounds

Marvin Austin

I cannot say that this pick would fill me with joy. The guy is all potential and no production and that type of player seems like a reach in the 1st to me. I mean, M. Johnson went all the way in the 3rd (and he had production). Also with us taking a DT i think its hard to know what type we’ll take. (also a guy like Vince Oghobasse from Duke will be around in the 3rd and he is just as good)

Personally i see the Bengals taking a space-filler in the later rounds to groom as Pekos back-up. But it all depends on if we keep Tank. If we keep Tank, we’ll have Sims, Tank and Peko and therefore a 1st rounder may have real trouble getting time on the field because on passing downs our DEs go inside.

Next year i can easily see us, on passing downs having a line like this:
M. Johnson DE, Odom @DT, Fanene @DT, Geathers DE (personally i think this line would awesome as each guy has shown that in one-on-one situations they can get sacks!)

I think the best pick would to be to take a playmaker. Personal preference is on the Offence but a Safety would also be sweet,

by Sheffieldbengal on Dec 11, 2009 9:35 AM EST reply actions

Some "experts" have Taylor Mays falling to us

And that Pinkard kid from USC a safety is a nice 3rd or 4th round safety…..remember we got Ndukwe in the 7th round

can we pick someone with a brain this time?

No more Dan Wilkinsons or Odell Thurman types… get the John Thornton or Madoooooo types who can adjust to the game rather than just brute force through

I guess a winning record brings out freaks.

by supergrover on Dec 11, 2009 9:44 AM EST reply actions

While I'd like an Interior D-Lineman.....

Mardy Gilyard or CJ Spiller. Both are playmakers on both Offense and Special Teams.

Safety first...

…but it’s nice that we don’t have any huge needs to fill and can stick to the ‘best player available’ for the most part.

My first four picks would be S, DT, MLB, WR. The order of those will depend on which rotational guys (i.e. Roy, Tank, Henry, etc…) we bring back.

If they cut Coles and draft a WR in the first I’d be OK with that too. But I really like Coles for the professionalism that he has brought to that position.

by cmick on Dec 11, 2009 10:47 AM EST reply actions

I think I could be a very professional WR!

I probably have the athletic ability to play on a high school level but I would be very professional about it.

by smoormandiddy on Dec 11, 2009 11:08 AM EST up reply actions

I went with Austin

Depth at DT is always a good thing.

A lot of mocks at Mocking The Draft(SB nation mock draft site) had us picking Gresham.

Pac 10 Defensive Player of the Year - Brian Price, DT UCLA

Would be a lot better than an underachiving DT from North Carolina

by Peko94 on Dec 11, 2009 12:36 PM EST reply actions

if he declares for the draft (and we take a DT) then i’d take a talent like Brain Price.

by Sheffieldbengal on Dec 11, 2009 2:58 PM EST up reply actions

Marvin Austin would be a nice addition for you guys...

He’s got a lot of talent and physical ability.

I’ll say this, as a former Syracuse season ticket holder, Mike Williams is a supremely talented WR. My problem is an odvious one. He lacks judgement and character, and if you guys want to get away from the old Bengals image, he’s not a very good pick for you. Could he contribute and play well? Yes he can. But, is he worth the headaches, even potential headaches, and bad PR you’d get by drafting him? Of course this isn’t my team, so it’s all up to your guys. I would not draft him if I had the choice. Just my opinion, but I’ve seen his ability first hand, and I’ve read about his problems on and off the field way too much for my liking.

Shouldn’t you be thinking playoffs right now anyways? Don’t get too ahead of yourselves now.

by NYSteelersFan4 on Dec 11, 2009 3:19 PM EST reply actions

Needs all over, really

WR? Ocho is almost “over the hill” and Coles isn’t a real threat. Jerome Simpson is a bust. 87 is a possession guy.
TE? They’ve got nobody right now. If they had a high-level guy this offense might be near the top. Depends on what they really think of Chase Coffman.
OT? Seems unlikely given the investment already, but they like to pick tackles.
OG? They generally don’t pick ‘em in the first round, but after that I could see it.
C? Could be a later round pick, to develop someone.
RB is the only need you’d say is a lesser need but even that depends on Larry Johnson returning. Otherwise they could probably use another back with some size.

Any defensive linemen would be a good pick. They don’t have anyone who is stellar, except maybe Odom, and he’s not been healthy.

It would be difficult to imagine them picking a LB early but that’s the position the Bengals have spent the most of their round 1 thru round 4 draft picks on for the last quarter century… and Marvin Lewis loves linebackers.

They could use a top safety. Someone who can cover and give a few bone jarring hits. If you add a top safety to the two corners they have this defense might rise to #1.

I’d probably lean towards drafting the best safety with the first pick. I’d probably go S, WR, DT, WR if they think Coffman can play; otherwise S, TE, DT, WR.

by occams_tiger_teeth on Dec 11, 2009 3:55 PM EST reply actions

I’m not sure about 1st round or not, but if not I would like to see at least another OT prospect taken. There has to be somebody coming out early who can be Collins 2.0. Hopefully we won’t need to play him for a couple of years and he can develop on the inactive list / practice squad, but I do think we need more depth there. Especially if we are going to keep going jumbo all the time. If we’re going to put three or four OTs on the field at a time, we need more depth there.

But if a good 1st round OT falls to us for some crazy reason, I’d be pretty tempted.

I also think we need a WR as well. Since we’ll be picking near the bottom of a round, we might have a good chance of getting a hard worker who was a borderline 1st rounder but worked (and hopefully will continue to work) his butt off to succeed. Get one of those and nobody will care about Simpson anymore.

by FriarBob on Dec 11, 2009 6:18 PM EST up reply actions

TE, Kicker, Offensive line

Big blocking TE that can catch the ball. Kicker who can consistently boomed the kickoffs for no returns. Had a good improvement to the offensive line although rookie Smith had not played much. Time to add some quality depth in tackles and center with long snap skills (2 for price of 1).

by Richard L on Dec 13, 2009 12:34 AM EST reply actions

My opinion

if they dont trade up to get Terrance Cody from Alabama then i think the Bengals should trade out of the first round for an early second round pick and take Mardy Gilyard
