My weekly Rant, Cosby A deep threat? Mix it up, and A few more things
Remember 05,06?
Yeah, those were wonderful days when we could expect our offense to go out every week and put up at least 30 points on any team, any given Sunday. Our only problem was we would put up those points and give up just as many if not more in the same game. That is when we could actually throw the ball all over the field and our offense was feared and labeled as one of the best, up there with The Colts. What happened to that Palmer? But most of you forget that in those years we could also run the ball as well, we had a balanced offense, you forget Rudi? Now it's just run, run, run, try to throw. I dont see why we can't use the same philosophy as we did in those years and with this defense the team would be unstoppable. We should use the run to set up the pass or pass to set up the run, that is what we loved about the team of those years(we could run and throw at will)! Against the Vikings, on our one scoring drive it was full of play-action, run plays out of pass formations, and no penalties.
We used to come out on the first or second play of a game and hit Ocho or Slim deep down the field, it wasn't surprising to see us score on the very first play of the game. For those who say we dont have have a deep threat we have Cosby, Simpson, and Ocho, we just don't use them as such. If Ocho is getting double and triple covered there should be at least one guy wide open or in man coverage somewhere. I don't know what Palmer's problem is, I mean even Mike Brown asked the trainers if he was injured or something. They said on ESPN (Chris Mortenson said) we would come out throwing vs the Chargers.....That may happen, but the thing is we have to stick with it, not just throw on the first drive then run, run, pass, punt the rest of the game. We have to mix it up a little bit, I mean you can almost guarantee that we will run on first down. Believe me, I love Benson getting his big carries but we have to get out of this we are gonna show run, then run mindset. Once we get in the playoffs we are not going to score just 13-17 points and win a game! especially if we have to play teams like the Colts. Benson, Johnson, and Scott can still get big yardage with a throw first offense.......Rudi did it! Remember how we used Chris Perry in 05.....Screens out of the backfield, tosses, sweeps,.....Scott can do that too!! Change of pace back.
All this being said, we do have deep threats with Ocho, Cosby, and Simpson. With Crocker and Peko being out that should open up a roster spot for our buddy Jerome Simpson to get in the game. We saw during the preseason and training camp some of his spectacular catch, and deep threat potential. After being with this team almost two years, if he aint ready, he never will be (Did you see Desean Jackson Sunday?), so I HOPE to see him on the field Sunday. If not Simpson, at least get Quan Cosby more involved in the passing game, he may not be that tall at 5'9'' (Desean Jackson is 5'10'') but he is speedy and was a deep threat with Texas. So it all comes down to the Offensive Coordiator and Palmer's problems, Brat has to make some changes in his play calling and Palmer has to play alot better......alot better!! You can't say he didn't have any time because the Vikings only had one sack and they held Jared Allen and the 3 other pro bowlers at bay, so the O-line had a pretty nice game(except for the false starts).
My point here really is: Benson can still get 20-25 carries a game with a Passing offense, it will give us more plays, more first downs, and keep the defense off the field. When you Run, Run, Pass, Punt it only gives you 3 plays to work with and gets our defense tired (which is what happened in the 2nd half Sunday). Mixing it up will get more yards per carry also, because the opposing defense won't be expecting a run on first and second downs, so that will keep them from having 8 or 9 in the box. We can use more play-action and running out of pass formations because we will have the defense on there heels, when you have 7 offensive linemen the defense knows you are going to run. I just a want a little doubt in the minds of the defense to make them hesitate that split second, make blown coverages, etc...
Bottom Line is; mix it up on offense, that's what the Saints do and they are 13-0, do we understand Mr. Bratkowski? If we did that on Offense we could be unstoppable with this great defense we got.
Interesting stats:
Chargers have not lost in December since 2005
Bengals are the 5th most penalized team (wow I figured we would be #1)
Bengals have not lost 2 straight games this season
Last Bengals win on the west coast was: week 12, 2003. Oddly enough against San Diego 34-27
The $100 mil QB Carson Palmer still hasn't thrown for 300 yards since 2007
Few more things:
I wouldn't mind seeing Mike Mickens play 4th corner, maybe if there was an injury or something
We cant have the freaking penalties on offense, please stop the false starts, holding, and block in the backs on returns..... it's becoming comical like St Louis and Coats.
Daniel Coats, dude, why cant you catch the ball? first play of the game he drops one. Where was J.P.?
Palmer audible to a pass play please!(the defense knows you are audibling to a run because they all come up to the line when you do)
Use more Quan Cosby in the passing game, he is a playmaker
Shayne Graham, WTF dude, you want a long term deal and you can't even kickoff in-bounds! If it's not one thing it's another with your Opie looking self.
Can we see our 2nd round pick from last year? with Crocker out that opens a spot, but Scott will be back so I doubt that will happen.
My thoughts on this week's quotes:
Give Larry Johnson a few more carries than 3, I would like to see Benson around 20-25, (he had 16 Sunday)
Lewis conferred with Bratkowski with Monday as a reminder to get Johnson more carries.
“Tie a rubber band to my ankle or my wrist to remind us to make sure we get him more opportunities,” Lewis said. “To keep Ced fresh. It’s good for Larry. It gives us a good balance and good opportunity to keep (Johnson) expanding and understand (the offense).
Brat, if your trying to score before the half, don't do what you did vs the Vikings with a draw and and screen (dumb). Using the timeouts correctly would've helped also :)
Palmer indicated the Bengals were trying to go for a score on that possession.
"We were trying to get a 10- to 15-yard play and go for the field goal," he said. "Looking back on it, it was a big momentum-changer."
Palmer I hope you have a better performance this week......please, us fans deserve better.
Palmer said:“We’re a team that throws the ball about 20 times and runs the ball about 30,” Palmer said. “That’s who we are and that’s what we’re going to continue to be. Hopefully we’ll continue to get more and more out of the passing game. Because of one loss we’re not going to go back to the drawing board and change our identity and freak out like everybody else outside this locker room.”
Sounds like Palmer is scared to pass! why are they paying you $100 million to throw 20 times a game? If that's the case Benson should be getting your game checks.
I like defering to the second half (as some of you know). Lewis wanted to defer but A "Captain" screwed up.
On Monday, Lewis hinted he wanted to defer if the Bengals won the toss. They did, but chose to receive. "We didn’t get the coin toss right. It wasn’t a very good start.”
But he wouldn't elaborate.
3 of our 4 losses came after getting the ball first to start the game, the one were we defered and lost was Denver.
Palmer on his passing perfomance:
"We need to do a better job with that," Palmer said. "They did a really good job with a game plan that took away Chad. We didn't do a good enough job of countering that and finding our other guys and moving the chains"
What's this "we" crap? YOU got to do a better job finding other guys that are open. Look for other guys other than Chad, that might help! Carson, Bro, you need to man up and just say you sucked that game.
Final thoughts:
I think we have deep threats we just are not using them as such, Cosby could be a great deep threat but Sunday he was thrown to once in more of a possession type (I think Marvin should give him a shot). Of course we all know about Simpson who has the size and speed but he must have ran over Marvin Lewis's dog or something. Then there is Ocho, who I think has always been a deep threat when he makes corners foolish on double moves. Brat just hasn't been using them as deep threats, I guess he thinks that all of our WR's are possession guys or something.
If you wanted to sign a free agent WR there are two that stand out to me off top, troubled WR and former Jaguar Matt Jones, and former Colt Marvin Harrison.
Im worried about Rey Maualuga, he had a horrible game and I just don't think he is comfortable at outside LB. Dhani didn't play well either and im looking forward to the day they move Rey back inside where he belongs, but I have faith in Zimmer and what he decides I will back him up.
I don't have faith in Brat on the other hand. Well lets hope that our offense can help out our defense this week against a Charger's team who has won 8 straight games and have 2 backs that can bust it open. (LT and Sproles).
This will be a long week waiting for the Charger game but lets get back to being winners.
I want to have a little confidence going into the Playoffs, the second seed will be nice but lets just wrap up the division Sunday. Lets worry about seeding after we clinch a spot in the playoffs first.

I just dont think we should run 30 and throw 20 every game, we should for certain teams just not every team
It seems Brat has the same game plan every week, it’s like he says: “ok fellas it’s the same thing we have been doing all year lets try it again.” I believe we should have a offensive game plan made just for the team we are playing that week, and should be made to exploit the weaknesses of that certain defense.

BTW Skip Holtz and Butch Jones will interview for Bearcats coaching job this week
Al Golden may as well, whatever happened to the Houston Coach coming for an interview is beyond me but Skip holtz or Butch Jones wouldn’t Bother me a bit

Palmer audible to a pass play please! (the defense knows you are audibling to a run because they all come up to the line when you do)
Here’s a crazy thought. Why don’t you audible to a play-action? Seriously. They all “know” you are audibling to a run, so let them think they are right again and pass it over their heads. Just doing it ONCE is enough to at least get SOME running room for awhile. Then don’t do it again for five or six tries. And just when they figure it was a once-off, do it again.
That ALONE would make at least SOME difference in the offense, wouldn’t it?
agree
Play-action works nicely

SUCK IT UP CARSON!
that’s it. And play Cosby as the deep threat. What else needs to happen? Oh, the O LINE, stop the pass rush for more than 2 seconds.
Cosby is our slowest receiver..
why do we want him as our deep threat? Cosby is the same thing we already have over and over.. a possession guy.

do I really need to post all the 40 times again..
he runs a 4.48 which is not fast. He runs in spurts, not long distance, which is why he is a great punt returner. At 5-9 he also lacks the height to be able to effectively go up and get the football which is huge in the long pass. Darren Sproles for the Chargers is 5-6 and we all know how small that guy looks on the field.

and he is 5'9'' but....
if you read the entire post, it says that Desean Jackson is only 1 inch taller at 5’10’’ and boy oh boy he is a damn good deep threat

Jackson also runs a 4.35
and is a ridiculous athlete. Lets not forget, Quan went undrafted for a reason. If he was really what you’re making him out to be someone would have sniffed him out. He is an excellent return guy for now and I’m sure would make a decent possession receiver but he is not a deep threat WR. Just because he can out hustle guys on ST plays where he’s coming in fresh off the bench for his one play every few minutes doesn’t mean he is going to burn an NFL CB and become this amazing deep threat like Henry or Chad.
You’re looking for love in all the wrong places.

Quan Cosby ran a 4.48
Mohamed Massaquoi 4.57 damn good deep threat
Austin Collie 4.55
Louis Murphy 4.43
Percy Harvin 4.41 1st round pick
Hakeem Knicks 4.49 1st round pick
Kenny Britt 4.48 1st round pick
Jeremy Maclin 4.45 1st round pick

Huge Guys
Most of these guys are at least 6 ft plus though. The combo of being average fast (for the nfl) and little is tough.
I just dont see a better option
who else should we go to?

not ALL are huge guys, give me a better option than Quan Cosby then?
and I dont think Quan is slow at all, he out ran B Scott and Scott had a head start. I dont see what everybody’s problem is with giving Cosby a shot! we won’t know for sure unless you try, I mean you guys act like you have seen it happen! I’m just saying we should see what he can do, it can’t be any worse than what we already have! If Coles and Purify cant get open, give Quan a shot! you know they wont try Simpson! we have been barking up that tree for 2 years, even in the garbage games last year. I’m hearing from ya’ll how Quasby wouldn’t be a good deep threat when we haven’t even seen them try it once! they dont even try it with Ocho, and they were not even doing it when Slim was still playing (I clearly remember us asking every week were slim was). Im not hearing any other options from ya’ll either so tell what would be a better choice? tell me….it really dont matter what we say anyway it prolly wont change
Collie is 6ft
Harvin is 5’11’’
Maclin 6ft
L. Coles is only 5’11’’

every inch counts
people were upset when Crabtree turned out an inch shorter than he claimed. Height does matter. Although 40 times are run without pads and in a straight line they do offer a decent idea of how much speed a player possesses. Chris Johnson ran a 4.24.. he looks faster with pads on.
I think the bigger picture here is not “who is our deep threat”, after all we can debate this until the season ends without ever seeing our offense even try one long ball. The solution is not with players, but with game planning and execution.

Cosby and Purify
These two guys didnt get a sniff by any other NFL teams before the draft for a reason….They are nothing more then role special teams players..them being activated instead of a free agent or simpson is criminal.. zero catches and cosby is running like he has a piano on his back lately
yeah neither did Houshmanzedah
he was a 7th round pick…….just saying

Cosby
Turned down his initial scholarship to Texas for a minor league baseball contract with the Anaheim Angels. He played in their organization for four years, with a few big league appearances before opting to go back to Texas on his football scholarship. Not many teams take a chance on a 26 year old rookie. Cosby hasn’t shown he can break a big return, but he has shown consistency on his returns.
Purify had a few off the field issues. He had a rough week there. Off the field issues will drop you from draft boards quickly. He has been great in a gunner role, I’d like to see what he can do in the passing game. He’s usually only in as a WR in big sets, which we always run the ball out of.
2 targets+0 Catches= Not a large sample size to work with(Quasby and Purify each have been targeted once)
Simpson is blazing fast, but the biggest questions about him have been his toughness and his ability to run routes against jam coverages. That said, I’d like to see him get a shot, so he can prove one of two things. Either he has it or he doesn’t. I’d like to see Coles deactivated for Simpson to get his shot, because Coles is basically taking the money and running at this point.

Whats the obsession with Simpson
Cosby and Purify may be street free agents, but so is half the O-Line. I do not recall SImpson being highly touted out of his small college. In fact, every analyst was shocked that the Bengals “reached” for him in the second round. In what round would Simpson have been drafted if it were not for the Bengals??
by bengal fan from new york on Dec 15, 2009 2:40 PM EST up reply actions
The "obsession" with Simpson is...
He was a 2nd round pick, we want to see our 2nd round pick on the field
CB85......Collaros for Heisman
by TennBengalfan on Dec 15, 2009 2:56 PM EST up reply actions
A second round project with only athleticism to show for. And mind you the second round tag is only a title. If he cant learn the playbook then he cant get on the field.
by bengal fan from new york on Dec 15, 2009 3:05 PM EST up reply actions
that goes back to the point of why......why not draft Desean Jackson?
why draft a project in the second round? I wonder how many second round picks from last year haven’t played? or how many from this year! we could’ve got Simpson in the later rounds. when they drafted him he wasn’t labeled as a project….and your right if you have not gotten ready in 2 years their is something seriously wrong

That was quite a reach for a project. They must have known this was an uphill battle to begin with b/c they drafted Caldwell in the next round that year (round 3).

Stop with the Targets
Purify is great in a gunner role? you can get those guys off the street, where are all of his tackles the last 3 weeks..This guy is no Don Beebe. ( who actually caught the ball as well)
you have to be more in this league!
Are you kidding, the guy has been active for 5 weeks and has zero catches.. HE CANT GET OPEN.. He was exposed on the practice squad and cut like 4 times from this team and not one sniff from any other NFL team for a reason, he is not an NFL receiver..The best thing he might have going for him is some dirt on somone in the front office, because there isnt another reason this guy should see the field!!
+1
I think Marvin has something personal against Simpson. many former players have said that Marvin brings personal feelings into personel decisions….perfect example is Chris Henry

Though Purify does not compare to Simpson
Purify may have been active for 5 games and has zero catches, but Simpson has been in the league two years and cannot dress for a game. What’s worse?
Now I would love to see Simpson play, but to think of him as some savior to the passing game is absurd. He would have no more targets than Purify in this run-oriented offense. Chad, Coles and Caldwell need the targets, not Simpson.

Not true
The receivers ahead of him produce on special teams. Now, Cosby and Purify have no catches but they have only been targeted ONCE each.

like I said in my fanpost
if not Simpson use more Quan Cosby. But Purify hasn’t contributed all that much on special teams he has 4 tackles and 2 assists. Simpson could come in a limited role and with Crocker out that will open a spot for him, we just want to see our second round pick play…and if he is not up to par, he needs to go because he is wasting a roster spot

Quan deserves a chance, and im not going thru everybody's ST tackles
But Purify hasn’t been anything on offense and offense is where we need help, I believe I heard Marvin or Brat say that he was going to be the relacement of Chris Henry….where is it at?

then why hold on to him? Let Simpson go. He's taking up space/spot.
Or there has to be some kind of reason they are holding on to him for this long without playing him. Nobody holds on to a player that can’t do what people are saying is the problem with him. Does not make any sense!
I wonder if the FO wants to admit a poor draft choice
if they hold on to him, maybe he pans out at some point in within the next two years and it doesn’t look like a wasted pick.
Also, I think there is space on every roster for a project or two. Who’s spot is he taking right now? When you are able to cut Shaun Smith and then sign him back the next week I don’t think you’re hurting for roster spots. I wouldn’t be surprised if the same thing happens to Purify once Peko/Crocker comes back. Seems like teams don’t grab fringe roster guys as quickly this late in the season, so there is some flexibility there (although with some risk involved).

YOU CANT GET THROWN TO IF YOU CANT GET OPEN
Pleases stop the “Purify has only been targeted twice” The guy couldnt get open in flag football..Thats why no NFL team other then us has ever wanted him. He gets cut he is out of football. Also we are all Benglas fans, and if you dont think this braintrust would sit one guy because they went out on a limb for another and dont want to admit then you dsmoking the good stuff. Bob Bratkoswki wants to prove to the world that he is a genius. Zimmer should walk over to his office and bitch slap that man for what he is doing to this team.. I would love nothing more then to eat my words about Purify.. just dont think its going to happen
Bengal Boy, you bring up some good points
But Simpson was being groomed to play the 1(Chad’s spot), not the slot. Unfortunately, that is how our braintrust works in the Queen City. Could we sign a FA who could produce more than Purify has in the slot? Absolutely. Will we? Probably not. There’s a HOF caliber receiver on the street right now, still not entirely sure why he hasn’t signed anywhere, or who he used to play for(hint hint). I know he’s not a young guy. He isn’t as fast as he used to be. But he’s still crafty as hell and can get open in space. Plus he has that Super Bowl ring, and could be a humbling leader in the locker room for a deep playoff run. He can also line up in the slot if need be, just look at all the audibles his former QB runs. So what if he supposedly shot someone. Shit, that should have “redemption” written all over it. Come on MB and redeem this future HOF WR.
OK, this post has turned into a not so subtle pitch of the idea of signing Marvin Harrison. But wouldn’t that be sweet if we actually did.

by bengal fan from new york on Dec 16, 2009 9:51 AM EST reply actions
This is exactly how Simpson can be worse than Cosby/Purify
Run the wrong route and you are looking at interceptions. That’s worse than no targets or no catches + special teams contributions.
I want Simpson to be awesome too, but I also want our team to be as competitive as possible on every Sunday and it sounds like, according to those who see this guy play everyday, having Simpson inactive makes the team competitive as possible. I want the offense to go bonkers on the Chargers this weekend, regardless of who is active. I just can’t make a solid argument that Simpson can contribute at this point.
