Go Deep for Slim

Here’s my vision (warning: I am not a football coach, but I can sure watch a good game):

First drive of the game against San Diego. Hopefully the Bengals get a first down with their predictable "run, run, pass" play calling. On 1st and 10, this is what I want to see:
Chad split wide left, Simpson wide right, Caldwell in the slot position. (Where’s Coles? I hope they bench his ass and he’s picking his butt on the sideline during this play, but he might be in there somewhere. Probably still picking his butt. He sure as hell is not catching any passes). They send Chad deep. Caldwell goes across the middle. Simpson ALSO goes deep. Carson throws it to Simpson.

This is brilliant for several reasons:
1) Chad will almost certainly be double teamed and that will leave Simpson one on one with their number 3 or 4 corner.
2) San Diego will almost certainly not expect this.
3) Simpson could make a spectacular catch.
4) It will change the whole complexity of the game.

If we could somehow go deep to one of our receivers not named Ochocinco, this will open up the entire offense for us. The San Diego secondary might poop their pants a little bit because they’re not expecting any semblance of a passing game because we haven’t had one since Henry has been on injured reserve. AND it will help all phases of the game: the run game by giving Cedric Benson more room to run if they’re thinking "Oh crap, they might go deep again," the defense by making the Chargers throw the ball more if they have to play catch up (best corner tandem in the NFL: Jonathon Joseph and Leon Hall), and the passing game because, well, duh.

The worse thing that could happen is an interception run back for a TD. I don’t see that happening. Most likely it’ll go for a simple incompletion. But I’m tired of all of this conservative play calling. I’m tired of not utilizing a pro bowl QB to the best of his potential.

And, yes, we should do this for Chris Henry. Hokey or not, reckless or not, we need to do it.

Go deep for Slim.

I'd like to see...

First offensive possession, 10 men on the field (a la Washington in the game after Sean Taylor was killed) with no one split wide to one side. Palmer drops back and throws a deep ball to the empty sideline. It’s a bit hokey, but I think it’d be a pretty moving tribute.

Even just a run up the middle out of that formation would be nice to see. They’re gonna run it on first down anyway so might as well pay homage to their teammate.

Only problem is that it could end up being intentional grounding if there’s nobody in the vicinity. But if Carson scrambled out of the pocket first it’s completely legit to do that.

Hey if any Bengals fans can tell me where Chris got his nickname Slim from, would be nice to know. Thanks

Because he's slim?

Because it was more polite than calling him “stick”. Because he was that skinny.

I am not sure Simpson

will even be active. Bratworst said they could only have 4 WR active.

Considering Quan is active as a KR

Simpson gets the 4th WR spot. Let’s see if he is who we thought he was, or if he makes us eat a word sandwich.

I think Simpson plays

I don’t know this for SURE, but I think they will have to play them. Marvin says the passing game needs a “shot in the arm.” I hope that means they’ll play Simpson. We’ll see.

10 men on field

Yeah, I thought about having 10 men on the field… It is a little hokey, but I wouldn’t mind if the Bengals did it. Even though it is a big game, it IS just a GAME and honoring a human’s life is bigger than a football game that really, in the grand scheme of things, is inconsequential.

I agree, but...

I think that the team should take the field with 10 men, and kneel the ball on the first play as an homage to Chris. I guarantee there is some dick CB or FS who would try to intercept our “honor” ball.

1. The Chargers are planning on passing all day anyways, lead or not. They have the league’s worst running game, Cincy has one of the league’s best run Ds.
2. The Chargers don’t have a 4th corner.
3. Whether or not the Chargers expect a pass, if you line up with 3 WRs they’re going to line up to defend the pass. That that point Benson has only 1 blocker that’s not on the line, which means it would be easy enough for 6 guys (playing nickel) to stop him or slow him down.
4. The Chargers would probably play zone. They are the best team in the league at eliminating big plays (both running and passing), and in the passing game it’s because the safeties are always there to help.
5. I doubt Chad is doubled. Cromartie and Jammer are two of the best man-coverage CBs in the league. They can stay with him.

I say heave it deep the first snap,

then the next one … build a lead, let Cedric carry it from there.
