Midweek Bengals Banter: Power Rankings, Best Plays of the 2000s, Bengals Still Get No Respect!
Another dull week in Bengaldome, in my opinion. Boring win over a bad team with another bad team coming to town this weekend. Game still isn't sold out, might not sell out unless the Bengals eat a decent amount of the remaining tickets. Bengals heavy favorites, still talking about getting respect despite being a top team in the AFC by record. I think we've heard this before.
Anyway, here are a few links.
- Power rankings! CBS: 5. Fox: 4. Yahoo: 6. ESPN: 5.
- Chris Chase lists his 10 top plays of the decade in the NFL. The Bengals weren't involved in any of them, perhaps unsurprisingly.
- Pete Prisco gave the Bengals a B- for their win over the Browns. The cumulative GPA is down to a 2.95.
- Charles Robinson says the Bengals have been flying under the radar. Are we the best team in the NFL that no one is talking about? Cool video from Yahoo! Sports. We apparently have to win playoff games to get respect, despite the fact that we have the best scoring defense in the league.
- Joe Reedy reports on some major storylines, including that Mike Zimmer is happy with the defense. I would be too, it's the best in the league.

Hey JSL, what’s up, are you upset with the Bengals running so much, or are you okay with the fact that they’re trying to work in their new ground game components(ie Andre, LJ)?

I think I mentioned this in the post-game thread.
I was at the game on Sunday, and while the running game was impressive, the passing game looked abysmal. People talk about balance on offense all the time, and I think this team is really lacking in that department. It’s very difficult for a team to win consistently with the type of offense we’re running, and the examples of the teams that win with it (2005 Steelers, 2008 Titans) have some things we don’t (ability to score touchdowns with the running game, ability to break off at least one 60+ yard run a game). The problem is, if we don’t get the passing game back on track, that safeties will be able to sit on the run, and “big gainers” for 15-20 yards will become 5-7 yards or worse. I’ve still seen way too many running plays get stuffed, too, to be a big proponent of this style of offense.
I’d have liked to see the Bengals pass 5 more times on Sunday and score another touchdown against the Browns. I honestly don’t care about yardage totals on either side of the ball (although stats about running backs, such as percentage of carries for 5+ or 3- yards are useful) as long as the team is scoring points and winning games. We just lost to Oakland with 40+ rushes and barely scraped by on the strength of our defense and Brady Quinn’s terribleness with 40+ rushes against Cleveland. So I’m not very happy with this brand of offense. It’s not balanced, and it doesn’t score points.

I really never thought that I’d say that our passing game needed improvement as long as Palmer was at the helm, but I have to admit that he has seemed a little skittish in the pocket. Hopefully our line will start protecting him a little better.
This is our year!

Missing Chris Henry
I am really starting to wonder what impact the loss of Chris Henry, or I should say the loss of the threat of Chris Henry, is having on our passing attack. Even though he wasn’t catching a ton, he was a threat every time he was on the field that defenses had to respect, and he always had to be accounted for in the red zone with his size & jumping ability.

One Notable Note about Ced
“STILL THE LEADER: Even though he hasn’t played the last two weeks due to a hip flexor injury, Cedric Benson continues to lead AFC running backs in Pro Bowl voting. Through Nov. 30, Benson has 469,568 in fan balloting, which will continue until Dec. 21. Fans can vote at NFL.com.”
KEEP VOTING
