A lot of use are thinking Simpson is going to be a savoir, but I think we should be realistic about what he can contribute.

That being said, over the last few years, their have been players, e.g. Pat Sims last year, who coaching staff have been reluctant to play, citing inexperience, but when they come in, they play much better than the previous starter

by R.F. Mehl on Dec 20, 2009 2:41 PM EST up reply actions

Remember that there's no film on Simpson

So he could prove a problem early on for their secondary. Jammer and Cromartie will be busy with Ocho and Caldwell (starting today), so maybe he can make a few plays downfield.

Something else to think about

Less Jumbo/Big formations could mean that the Bengals game plan is to air it out more.

Blogger at CincyJungle.com -- SB Nation Cincinnati Bengals blog.

by Josh Kirkendall on Dec 20, 2009 2:39 PM EST up reply actions

I hope not

SD has or of the worst running defenses in the league. We can’t get into an air-it-out battle with Rivers.

by whodeyla on Dec 20, 2009 2:54 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

We don’t really use Collins in the jumbo anymore, right?
I think sitting Roland would have been interesting. Playing Smith most of the game, but if we need a pass blocking specialist, play Collins

by R.F. Mehl on Dec 20, 2009 2:43 PM EST up reply actions

I agree on that one.

…I have viewed Collins as a future starter. Who knows?

by goffchile on Dec 20, 2009 2:45 PM EST up reply actions

I think the best use of the current talent could be

Collins/Mathis/Cook/Smith/Whitworth

by R.F. Mehl on Dec 20, 2009 2:47 PM EST up reply actions

agree...

Whitworth and Smith at the tackles—Mathis and Collins at guard. I think that’s our starting line next year.

by goffchile on Dec 20, 2009 2:49 PM EST up reply actions

actually, I think Collins has the potential to play like a healthy Levi Jones and be a good LT.
Whitworth is good, but a bit slow against speed rushers at LT, so move him to RT, and have Andre replace Bobbie Williams as at RG. He would be a force there

by R.F. Mehl on Dec 20, 2009 2:52 PM EST up reply actions

Don't let all the percieved.....

character issues cloud the judgement. Andre is one heck of a talent at tackle. Question his judgement, maturity, etc. But, the kid is a football player first and a darn guifted one at that.

Guard?

I don’t think Collins can play effictively at guard.

by BamaBengal on Dec 20, 2009 2:53 PM EST up reply actions

When they drafted him...

….the projected him to “play every position” on the line. The Bengals like to draft tackles and convert them. We almost never draft true guards. Alexanders philosophy of pass protect is you better have four tackles if you want time.

by goffchile on Dec 20, 2009 2:55 PM EST up reply actions

I agree...

with everything but, the Collins part. I don’t think he has the body or skill set for guard.

by BamaBengal on Dec 20, 2009 2:58 PM EST up reply actions

RE:

I would argue that how they use the guards this year, that you could use a tackle at guard — especially at right guard, who rarely pulls (b/c it’s Bobbie, I guess).

Shaun Smith

Active. What can we expect here?

by BamaBengal on Dec 20, 2009 3:10 PM EST reply actions

if the guy is motivated he can dominate any match-up. Stamina issues will reduce his impact. He’ll aid the rotation. His experience playing 5-tech DE may mean we see some more hybrid 3-4 looks in todays game to allow Rivers, B.Johnson Rey and Dhani play together (as well as allowing M.Johnson to concentrate on pass-rushing)

by Sheffieldbengal on Dec 20, 2009 3:19 PM EST up reply actions

potential 3-4 alignment

DE Fanene
DT Smith
DE Geathers

OLB Johnson
MLB Rey
MLB Dhani
OLB Rivers

That would be interesting…

by swebbIL on Dec 20, 2009 3:25 PM EST up reply actions

it will be interesting to see how the LB arrangement is next year.

How much longer will Dhani play/start.
Does Rey move to the middle?
How do you get B. Johnson more snaps?
When will Rivers start making big plays in addition to being a solid tackler?

by R.F. Mehl on Dec 20, 2009 3:40 PM EST up reply actions

RE: Dhani

Dhani is signed through 2010, so I’d expect him to play through next year.

Blogger at CincyJungle.com -- SB Nation Cincinnati Bengals blog.

by Josh Kirkendall on Dec 20, 2009 3:50 PM EST up reply actions

ideally, Dhani would be the 4th LB, playing nickel and filling in at WILL and MIKE, but he still may be out best option at MIKE next year.
I just wish he was a little faster covering backs

by R.F. Mehl on Dec 20, 2009 3:54 PM EST up reply actions

Agreed.

I don’t think Rey is ready for the middle. At least compared to Dhani. Rey could be a big play maker, but he’s still too fresh. Even though his aggressiveness has worked for him this year, it’s also been his biggest detriment.

thanks.

Hopefully we can score here and again after the half.

Hall

Looks like Hall expected Jackson to go and cut off the route. Instead Jackson broke out. Just a good job by the Chargers.

Something else is funny?

Someone said that they’re not concerned like they used to be on long passes by the opposition — because we tend to cover that pretty good.

I’m more comfortable (though not technically “comfortable”), on third and short. We tend to make those more than we used to. Especially when Rudi was the feature back.

agree

in ‘05 we weren’t that great at short yardage. Steinback and Jones were pretty weak at the POA.
Short yardage is pretty strong this year

Feeling optimistic.

Lets pound it down the endzone eating up these last two minutes, then take it backk at the half.

Wasted play there

Palmer calling on the line is worse than Lewis’ clock management

Field goal.

Need, need, need to finish these drives.

TD would have been better

Hopefully we can score one after the half.

by satyanaas on Dec 20, 2009 5:21 PM EST reply actions

the bengals never score TDs in the redzone…it’s just the way it is

by pedro_oliveira on Dec 20, 2009 5:22 PM EST up reply actions

before the bye we we’re one of the best red-zone offences.

Passing game is back...

and penalties are down. Now if we can find the red zone game…

by StLBengal on Dec 20, 2009 5:25 PM EST reply actions

teams are clueing into that as well. That is why we need our TEs etc to step it up because they get softer coverages

by Sheffieldbengal on Dec 20, 2009 5:27 PM EST up reply actions

Fucking horrible clock management at the end of the half. Damn spike and we took a timeout to the locker room with us. Great run by LJ, would have been nicer if he would have run out of bounds……
