Second Half Open Thread: Cincinnati Bengals at San Diego Chargers
Carson Palmer is back. And so is the offense's inability to score touchdowns in the redzone. The offense is solid today, scoring on three of their four offensive possessions -- all three have gone over 50 yards with at least eight plays. Chad Ochocinco caught a 49-yard touchdown to give the Bengals a 10-7 lead before San Diego's Vincent Jackson made a nice double move on Leon Hall to catch a 21-yard touchdown pass to give the Chargers a 14-10 lead. The Bengals threatened at the end of the first half with an 11-play drive that went 75 yards, but couldn't score a touchdown -- aka, they reached the end zone. Instead, a field goal reduces the Chargers lead to 14-13. The Bengals get the ball back in the second half.
Game plan thought of the second half. Don't get in the red zone.
Defensively, the Bengals are playing a strong game against one of the league's better passing offenses. Johnathan Joseph picked off his sixth pass of the year in the first half and the Bengals have largely put good pressure on Rivers.
Palmer: 12/19, 189 yards passing, TD
Benson: 7 rushes, 23 yards rushing
Larry Johnson: 4 rushes, 35 yards rushing
Chad Ochocinco: 3 receptions, 79 yards receiving, TD

On the spike
I’m actually not sure why people actually think it’s a bad move. The Bengals had one time out left, the clock was ticking. The spike stops the clock, giving the Bengals time to get the right play in and alignments and all of that jazz. Granted, in hindsight it didn’t work out that way, but every football team would do the same thing. I’m not sure what the problem is with spiking. It’s the smart move.

I guess that still depends on whether they win it or not.
Plenty of time for a big-play offense with two time outs.

That's our physicality again.
They’re getting hurt all over the field
I’d trade our physicality for some good coverage here

16 seconds on the clock
plenty of time unfortunately
please God
make them fumble the exchange and then M. Johnson pick it up and run it for a TD

Nah. We don’t need it and our defense needs to make sure that everyone is SURE of what they’re doing.

what made you think they would think about anythin during a timeout?
They’ve been better off thus season just playing the ball. They sure as hell don’t think about things during timeouts.

we blitzed they beat it
thats life.we played tough in this one. Kicker still had to seal it with a 52 yarder, hardly a pinch.
Good game.
in the end it’s the Leon Hall soft defense. It’s usually Joseph, but thu time I have no idea what Hall was thinking. And it’s not like he didn’t have ten fucking minutes to think about it.

It was no disgrace
Time to refocus and move on – can do the deal next week and remember 15 this week.
Congratulations
To Caldwell and to our Defense
Congratulations to you, jerk
It seems like you got what you wanted.
The great thing is teams fighting for playoff seeds after week 13
That meet again in the postseason have never repeated their win.

if we win out can we regain the third seed?

You're right, barely losing to San Diego, a bona fide superbowl contender by 3 at their place
in a game fraught with penalties and failure to convert in the red zone, that makes us frauds.
hahahaha
chumps

Penalties lost the game, pretty much
The -25 yard fumble led to the field goal was preceded by a false start penalty. One possession was wasted by 3 straight procedural penalties. Two possessions inside the 10 resulted in field goals. The defense was too soft, then there was a stupid blitz called, on the Chargers’ last possession.
It’s a shame to lose this one given the Chris Henry situation and the playoff implications.
9 in the second half pitiful

Well, they played their hearts out for #15
against a very very good team in their house. A few mistakes, otherwise we beat them. It’s a tough loss, especially given the circumstances, but we’re still have 2 more games that are winnable.
very bad

Going up against Vincent Jackson he did ok.First TD was an excellent move and catch.2nd Td was a blown coverage
it was obvious he expected help over the top.
The steelers just out-dumbed the bengals
they’re up two with 3:00 to go, an they try for an onside kick. they got it, but before it went ten yards. so now the pack ha a short field down 2.

Next time we see S.D.
We’ll have Scott and Peko on the field.
Honestly
do you really believe we are going to win a game in the playoffs, assuming we even make it

we will beat KC and win the division next week.11-5 is still manageable
We went to the west coast against a red hot chargers team and it went to the wire. There is a strong case to say we were the architects of our own downfall, but they hung in there and didnt give up(unlike some jokers on here). I have no reason to believe the team will give up on the rest of the season. I see us back there(Qualcomm in January).
only if we can stop the freaking penalties idk what their problem is with that

There’s a strong case to say we have been the architects of our downfall ALL SEASON LONG. When it’s not the stupid penalties it’s the moronic calls by our coaches our simply bad execution by our overrated players. Maybe, just maybe, this team is a team that got lucky in the beginning of the season and is now being exposed
by pedro_oliveira on Dec 20, 2009 7:28 PM EST up reply actions
It could not be more clear...
This team is not ready to compete at the next level. We will lose in the first round and then get a shitty draft pick for our troubles.
let's see how they manage to screw another first rounder

The question is now...
After a first round loss in the playoffs how will Mike Brown find a way to return us to a 3 – 13 team next year.
The concern...
…Bob’s got a two-quarter playbook (No Chad in the second half (his first half stats per match must lead the league); Need to find the second half adjustments.
Not a pretty game...
But the guys fought their guts out and showed some things we haven’t seen in a while. Dissapointing but, no regrets.
Post game thread is up.
Here.
