Second Half Open Thread: Cincinnati Bengals at San Diego Chargers

Carson Palmer is back. And so is the offense's inability to score touchdowns in the redzone. The offense is solid today, scoring on three of their four offensive possessions -- all three have gone over 50 yards with at least eight plays. Chad Ochocinco caught a 49-yard touchdown to give the Bengals a 10-7 lead before San Diego's Vincent Jackson made a nice double move on Leon Hall to catch a 21-yard touchdown pass to give the Chargers a 14-10 lead. The Bengals threatened at the end of the first half with an 11-play drive that went 75 yards, but couldn't score a touchdown -- aka, they reached the end zone. Instead, a field goal reduces the Chargers lead to 14-13. The Bengals get the ball back in the second half.

Game plan thought of the second half. Don't get in the red zone.

Defensively, the Bengals are playing a strong game against one of the league's better passing offenses. Johnathan Joseph picked off his sixth pass of the year in the first half and the Bengals have largely put good pressure on Rivers.

Palmer: 12/19, 189 yards passing, TD
Benson: 7 rushes, 23 yards rushing
Larry Johnson: 4 rushes, 35 yards rushing
Chad Ochocinco: 3 receptions, 79 yards receiving, TD

Yeah.

As great as it would be to get into the playoffs today by our own hand, some insurance would be nice.

On the spike

I’m actually not sure why people actually think it’s a bad move. The Bengals had one time out left, the clock was ticking. The spike stops the clock, giving the Bengals time to get the right play in and alignments and all of that jazz. Granted, in hindsight it didn’t work out that way, but every football team would do the same thing. I’m not sure what the problem is with spiking. It’s the smart move.

Someone has a laser pointer in Mile High Stadium, they were shining it in the eyes of some player.

Police trying to find them.

You're right, barely losing to San Diego, a bona fide superbowl contender by 3 at their place

in a game fraught with penalties and failure to convert in the red zone, that makes us frauds.

hahahaha

CB85......Collaros for Heisman

by TennBengalfan on Dec 20, 2009 7:22 PM EST up reply actions

Penalties lost the game, pretty much

The -25 yard fumble led to the field goal was preceded by a false start penalty. One possession was wasted by 3 straight procedural penalties. Two possessions inside the 10 resulted in field goals. The defense was too soft, then there was a stupid blitz called, on the Chargers’ last possession.

It’s a shame to lose this one given the Chris Henry situation and the playoff implications.

by Jake Liscow on Dec 20, 2009 7:20 PM EST reply actions

Well, they played their hearts out for #15

against a very very good team in their house. A few mistakes, otherwise we beat them. It’s a tough loss, especially given the circumstances, but we’re still have 2 more games that are winnable.

we will beat KC and win the division next week.11-5 is still manageable

We went to the west coast against a red hot chargers team and it went to the wire. There is a strong case to say we were the architects of our own downfall, but they hung in there and didnt give up(unlike some jokers on here). I have no reason to believe the team will give up on the rest of the season. I see us back there(Qualcomm in January).

There’s a strong case to say we have been the architects of our downfall ALL SEASON LONG. When it’s not the stupid penalties it’s the moronic calls by our coaches our simply bad execution by our overrated players. Maybe, just maybe, this team is a team that got lucky in the beginning of the season and is now being exposed

by pedro_oliveira on Dec 20, 2009 7:28 PM EST up reply actions
