Back to Blaming Brat

Hey Bengal Lovers,

There has been a lot of talk about our offensive "woes" which I think is largely legit.  But check this scoring trend out against teams we're favored to beat...

Scoring by half

Week 2: First- 21, Second- 10

Week 4: First- 14, Second- 9 (including OT)

Week 6: First - 17, Second - 0 (granted we lost this big but we were up in the first half)

Week 7: First - 31, Second - 14

Week 9: First - 17, Second - 0

Week 11: First - 14. Second - 3

Week 12: First - 13, Second - 3

Week 13: First - 17, Second - 6

Anyone else notice a little trend?  We're slowing down more than a skinny kid on seconds.  While I do think our "O" is missing Hoosh and Henry, I'm going to re shift the blame for our sluggish offense to our second favorite whipping boy Bratowski (M. Brown being the first) away from Purify, Coats, and Coles (though clearly these guys have not produced to par).  Our game plan is pretty obvious, once we get a two, maybe three score lead we go all Rush Limbaugh conservative and run the clock to zero.  Thus I think that we are a better offensive team than perhaps we let on.  As for the other games, they were trend changers mostly  because we still needed to score in the second half, something we accomplished numerous times when necessary.

Anyways Bengaldom, do you have any thoughts?  Do you agree and/or disagree that most of our "problems" stem from game planning rather than personell?

Yeah, it’s all about the game plan. Brat is even starting to blame himself a little bit. I have to admit that I was a little ticked when with 3:40 sec remaining and a 2 score lead, we ran three straight times, including on a 3rd and 11. You might as well just tell the other team that we aren’t trying to get first downs anymore.

This is our year!

I'm more on the personnel side...

Perhaps my memory is playing tricks on me, but I remember a couple of posts and articles, some on this very blog, from the 2006-2007 seasons that were questioning Brat because of his apparent unwillingess to run the ball. Too much passing, too much no huddle, not enough time of possession, we have to keep our defense off the field, we can’t kill the clock.

Be careful what you wish for, you just might get it.

Now we criticize Brat because he won’t pass the ball?

The Bengals offense has been retooling for the past two years and we just aren’t there yet. Honestly, its amazing to me that we are as good as we are. Is Bratkowski the offensive genius of the century, probably not. But part of a game plan is to maximize your strengths and conceal your weaknesses. It seems like Brat has assessed his team—-probably accurately—that if we are going to win, we need to chew clock and keep it on the ground. So that’s what we are doing.

genious?

Interesting take on the game plan there… Brat assesses talent, wins games, and does his job competently. Either you’re smoking crack or you’re onto something! I think its a bit of both, but I have to admit I never really thought Brat could actually be doing a good job at adjusting to the talent around him and game-planning based off that.

Genius!

Brat has employed the Drinken Master tactic.

i think it’s just the nature of bengals fans. most feel the need to complain about something, even if they actually get what they were whining for to begin with.

i'm going to go america all over your ass!

I'm complaining about balance right now and it's OK to do so!

I have been a Bengals fan since the 70’s and seen more than most of you guys. I’ve dumped more money into something that I enjoy doing and that is being a Bengals fan. I will never stop doing so. That being said, I can scrutinize and be objective in anyway I want to. Yes we are winning, but I do not want to see another season go down the tubes b/c of some blundering idiots that will not do their job. Catch, Throw, Run, and Make Adjustments/good decisions when needed. When there is no balance on offense, adjustments need to be made and I don’t want to hear about we are a run first team. We can be a run first team, but still need the pass Duhhhhhhhhhhhh! BALANCE BALANCE BALANCE That is what makes a good offense, that is needed to keep winning in the post season. This conversation has been brought up on this forum before. Nobody wants the 05 form, just balance and the ability to adjust, b/c we have a Defense and this is our future now… So stop criticizing the critics.

The forgotten culprit...

How about Mike Sheppard, our WR coach? It seems like our WRs are constantly out of position, or that there’s confusion/lack of chemistry. Yeah, running all the time seems to disrupt our passing rhythm (I don’t know why, other teams can balance it), but still, I think that Sheppard is struggling to develop the talent he’s been given.

As for Brat…he seems like he can only go one way or the other. All running (now) or all passing (the past). Given our o-line’s struggles at pass-blocking, yes, running more does make sense. But he seems to have a 1950s, meat-and-potatoes approach to things, when what we need is imagination.

imaginaaAaAtion... imaginATION.. imgaginaaationnnn.. (south park? anyone?)

Mo just made a similar comment on our WR’s inability to get open against a sub par Lions secondary, no option but to agree on this one. For an alleged talented WR crew, we have guys struggling to do their jobs effectively.
