The Poll to end the Jerome Simpson "Bust" debate (for this season)

We will put this subject to rest for this season, or until Jerome Simpson starts playing. I want to know, as of right now. In your mind is Jerome Simpson a Bust or not?

It should be 1 catch in rookie season right?. I dont know how you can count him having “a season” if he hasnt been activated my Mike Brown.. I mean Marvin

i dont know if simpson is a bust but....

everyone talks about how we could of had Deshawn Jackson, but there was other players available such a Ray Rice, Steve Slaton, and Mario Manningham. So unless Simpson turns out as good or better (or almost as good) than the names mentioned above i would consider this another wasted pick. I always wonder what round Jerome would of been drafted in or even drafted at all if the Bengals didnt draft him.

by tj deouchemanzada on Dec 7, 2009 2:28 PM EST reply actions

steelers would have taken him

Second round. Not saying that proves anything but his stock shot up after the last workouts.

The silence on him has been defeaning which is disconcerting but I have a feeling he is going to pan out. Don’t know why.

by goffchile on Dec 7, 2009 3:05 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

didnt the steelers use their pick on sweed?

maybe it was a good pick after all maybe simpson would of made that td catch against us in week 3(that sweed dropped) if he played for the steelers lol

by tj deouchemanzada on Dec 7, 2009 4:23 PM EST up reply actions

yep

And the talk is he’s a bust

by goffchile on Dec 7, 2009 4:39 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

My general policy

I nearly threw my remote when we took him instead of Ray Rice…but I think that all players should get at least two seasons’ worth of game-time experience (whether starting or in a rotation) before anyone even begins discussing whether they’re a bust or not. And he’s a small-school player, as well, so that has to factor into the learning curve.

Regardless, drafting a project player in the second round is blatantly idiotic.

by Big Sky Bengal on Dec 7, 2009 2:52 PM EST reply actions

I can agree with that

Small school players typically have a three year learning curve at any position(See Steve McNair, QB, Alcorn State.)

You know who else drafts project players in the second round(as well as the first)? Al Davis?

by Danimal, Destroyer of Worlds on Dec 7, 2009 9:56 PM EST up reply actions

Absolutely a bust

First time I shot her, shot her in the side.
Hard to watch her suffer, but with the second shot she died...

WR's usually need 2-3 years

before they begin to understand the NFL game. There are, of course, the exceptions like Percy Harvin or Piere Garcon but for the most part it takes those guys awhile to fully adjust and become a significant part of the offense. It’s hard to label a guy a bust when we have literally one play from one regular season game to review. But it certainly does send a message when the guy cannot get off the inactive list to even show his “talent”.
So I guess if we compare his impact on our team to those who were drafted around him we could label him a bust.

Robert Meachem

Robert Meachem was the 30th pick in the first round to New Orleans in 2007. In his rookie season, he didn’t catch a pass. In his second year, he caught 12 balls. This year he is contributing to the tune of 29 receptions for 544 yards and 8 TDS. Sidney Rice is another example of the third year being the most productive. Now I know the first thing people will say is Simpson can’t even get on the field, but I am willing to wait atleast until after next year before I would put him out to pasture. And while he is taking up a roster spot, it is not like he is taking up anything on the salary cap.

For all that say Simpson is a bust even though the guy hasnt had a chance all year I just dont understand. The most common argument that I hear is because he cant get activated.. This can be for many reasons and many of those can turn out to be the people involved( m brown, brat, marvin).. you must respect their evalution of players more then I can imagine.. Their lack of success is shocking and Marvin and those guys should thank Zimmer everyday that we dont have an interim coach right now

As for Simpson. He walked in the worst situation possible last year.. it even turned Chad into having a horrible year.

Yet I hear support for Purify. It shocks me. There hasnt been an NFL team other then the Bengals even sniff at this guy beofre the draft or since. This tells me more then anything.. Below is his Wikepedia.. How can Simpson be worse??

Purify went unselected in the 2008 NFL Draft, however, he was signed by the Cincinnati Bengals on May 8. He played in all four preseason games, with three receptions for 25 yards. He was waived on August 30 and signed the next day to Bengals practice squad. He was then released on September 23 and re-signed October 22 to practice squad, where he spent the rest of the season.

In 2009, Purify played in all four preseason games recording four receptions for 46 yards. Then, he was signed from the practice squad on November 13 and made his NFL debut during week nine at Pittsburgh, where he played on offense and recorded one special teams tackle. ( I will add he has made 0 catches in his four starts this year)

"For all that say Simpson is a bust even though the guy hasnt had a chance all year I just dont understand."

Doesn’t that he “hasn’t had a chance” kinda serve as a hint?

I hope he ain’t a bust, but yer rationale is laden with peanuts and corn.

I guess a winning record brings out freaks.

by supergrover on Dec 7, 2009 7:53 PM EST up reply actions

Hey peanuts and corn

What dont you get??.. my argument is I dont trust the people involved in giving him a chance or not.. Not that hard to follow.
Brat wants to use a blocker so Purify who was passed over by every NFL team before and after the draft and all of last year is in there….I hope they come to their senses and realize that the " great Brat" is stubborn and has led this team to NOTHING under his reign and force the deep threat on his game plan!! I think it will actually help his running game..

WHYUS brings up a great point.. at camp and in the preseason Simpson looked good.. this is stubborn Bob not talent at work here

by BENGAL BOY on Dec 7, 2009 8:12 PM EST up reply actions

I feel with all of the struggles of not having a deep threat,

that they are going to activate Simpson b/c they will have no choice, but to. There is no deep threat and being a run team you still need that threat. They are certainly using Purify, not as a deep threat but to what they see him as, ST and blocking down field for the run game. They are not playing Simpson for a reason and not just b/c he is not ready. That is plan stupid. It doesn’t make a whole lot of sense, think about it people. We know he can catch, we know he can run and jump and putting him in on the easiest run routes, doesn’t take a whole lot of brains.(see Chris Henry) Run, get open and I’ll throw you the ball or use you as a decoy. SIMPLE It’s time to play him to see what he can give us, decoy or not. He certainly didn’t look scared catching that TD catch in the preseason game, which was awesome and everybody thought so too, at the time. At least admit that.

by WHYUS!! on Dec 7, 2009 7:50 PM EST reply actions

This is logic I can approve of.

Pure energy.

I guess a winning record brings out freaks.

by supergrover on Dec 7, 2009 7:55 PM EST up reply actions

The problem is

since your logic is sound, we have to assume that Simpson is not impressing anyone in Bengaldom. They desperately need a deep threat, but he’s sitting every week. He must be not who they thought he was, or he’d have been activated. Also, Palmer really dissed him big time by publicly calling for Purify to be the man. You don’t do that to a guy who you hope is going to someday step into Ocho’s shoes.

by occams_tiger_teeth on Dec 7, 2009 10:22 PM EST up reply actions

can't we all just (sniff, sniff) get along...

I’m so tired of hearing about Simpson as the answer. Everyone is quick to point out that Purify is not a good wide receiver…and if that is true (and it is) what does that tell you about Simpson. It’s fantasy land thinking to beleive that we have this amazing, deep threat talent on the bench and we haven’t activated him yet because…uh…I don’t know, what’s the conspiracy theory here. We released a guy we could have used, promoted a practise squad guy that wasn’t going anywhere, and passed up a bench warmer that we were paying anyway for what…help me out here…couldn’t have been because the entire team has been watching him for two years now and he sucks ass…must have been something big. OH! I know! he must have parked in Mike Brown’s parking spot.

by steve whodey on Dec 7, 2009 8:19 PM EST reply actions

I'm not saying Simpson is the answer to all of our troubles but,

All I’m saying is that Simpson with his speed, jumping, and hands, can actually do better for the run and passing game than Purify. Purify, can help out on ST though. Marvin even said that Simpson is a work in progress and is not going anywhere, he likes him a lot. Word for word!! That tells me something right there doesn’t it? He’s not the savior on offense, but can help out more by giving more options and keeping Defenses honest. Something that Caldwell, Coles, and Purify can’t do. When we had Henry the two safeties played back, way back and now they play way up towards the line and in the middle. Somebody with speed can force safeties back again. Why can’t people see this? It worked for us when Henry was playing! Just saying

by WHYUS!! on Dec 7, 2009 8:40 PM EST up reply actions

If all they want is a decoy deep threat

then let Ocho run down the field. Heck, Coles and Caldwell can run down the field. It doesn’t matter who you let run around down there.

"If it wasn't this, it'd be something else."

by ZJiff30 on Dec 7, 2009 9:35 PM EST up reply actions

but they don't send anybody down field.WTF!!

Coles and Caldwell are more possession WR. So they think. They also used Henry as a decoy too. That worked for the run game, until they thought Henry wasn’t a threat, then Carson started to throw to him.

by WHYUS!! on Dec 7, 2009 10:50 PM EST up reply actions

have you ever heard Marvin bad mouth a player

Marvin is a player’s coach. he has never said anything publicly about a player that isn’t a positive. just like he has never complimented the team without mentioning some things “we need to do better.” It’s just his style and his head coaching philosophy. what he says has got nothing to do with what he thinks.

by steve whodey on Dec 7, 2009 9:47 PM EST up reply actions

like he says, “I hear better with my eyes.” If he really liked him you would be “hearing” Simpson on Sundays.

by steve whodey on Dec 7, 2009 9:49 PM EST up reply actions

He loved Glen Holt as well how about the other carousel of talent he has had in here..Have we forgotten that this franchise has been one of the worst in evaluating talent in the entire NFL for a long long time. How can you say this staff wouldnt make a mistake or be stubborn because a player fits what their failed scheme is trying to do. I was really hoping this would be the year that Brat would do whats best for the team not his ego…. This team is 4-8 without Zimmer and the D… PERIOD I still think there is time to fix the Offensive ship before the playoffs but if they dont at least tinker with the offensive personal its another year of great we made it …instead of lets win this thing
