The Pass WILL HAVE TO be better to beat the Vikings+Other Fun Stuff
This passing game has to get better because we may have to play from behind IF we make the playoffs and have to pass alot more. Palmer needs to be more confident in himself and his receivers, Ocho and Benson cant win them all for us. If you watched the Sunday night game, it seemed the pass defense was the Vikings achilles heel and we won't be able to run as good against that dynamic run defense with the 4 pro bowlers on that defensive line. The quick throws and RB passes will have to be a huge part against them because that line will get to Palmer quick and I dont want 10 sacks on Palmer this coming Sunday. I really hope Brat watched that game Sunday night so he can see this, the Cardinals tried to run and had very little effect until the pass set up the run, but it was only a decent night for the Cardinals run game, Beanie had 13 carries for 28 yards, Hightower had 6 rush for 50 yards and most was on one run. So if Brat wants to run all game it will probaby be a bunch of 3 and outs for Cincy, the run, run, pass game plan seems like a bad idea for this game that could win us the division. Palmer will have to be on his A-game Sunday for us to have a chance to seal up the division championship against the vikings, since the Ravens lost Monday and set the "magic number" at 1 game. We all are aware of Palmer's struggles recently that has seemed to have gone downhill since the loss of Slim, but somebody has to fill that void (I wish it was Simpson). What happened to the Palmer of the Bears game?????.....
KEYS TO VICTORY AGAINST MINNESOTA
AT
Vikings favored by 6.5
1. Score early and get a decent lead, Cant be satisfied with a 10 or 14 point lead, must keep foot on gas pedal
2. Shutdown Adrian Peterson and make Brett Favre beat us (who has been historically bad vs Cincy)
3. STOP THE FREAKING FALSE STARTS, HOLDING, DELAY OF GAME, DRIVE KILLING PENALTIES!!!!
4. Get pressure on Favre to shutdown Rice and Harvin
5. Probably the most important, dont throw to Coats
6. Don't be so predictable on offense
7. Palmer and Coles have to get on same page, Palmer has to be the QB he can be and has been before
8. Benson and the other RB's will have to make the most of the carries that they get (hope Scott is back)
9. Protect Carson Palmer (the Vikings front 4 are better then the Lions who got alot of pressure on Palmer)
10. Do what Arizona did: Double team Jared Allen (you think Brat is that smart?)
11. STOP THE FALSE STARTS!!! SHUTDOWN AP!!!! AND PROTECT PALMER!!!!
12. When we get into the red-zone score TD's dont play for FG's which are scary at best
5 things to look forward to Sunday
1. A win clinches AFC North :)
2. Benson is 31 yards away from a 1000 yard season
3. Ocho is 90 yards away from a 1000 yard season
4. If Benson goes over 100 yards he will break franchise record wih six 100 yard games in a season (tied with five)
5. Ocho is 185 yards away from 10,000 career receiving yards
And nobody told me Mike Mickens was on our practice Squad!! SWEEEEET!!!
I must have missed that article on Cincyjungle lol
Just thought I would throw some interesting stats at ya:
I found a cool stat on Bengals.com: the last Bengal to block a field goal attmept John Thornton and Before this season the last opposing player to block a Bengals field goal John Thornton of Tennessee Titans Hmmm.
The last time Carson Palmer threw for 300 yards 12-30-07 vs Miami, he has done it 12 times in his career, Boomer did it 23 times. Both Times Palmer threw for 400 yards we lost Hmmmm :)
Palmer's career: 123 TD's, 77 INT's, 88.3 passer rating<Franchise best
2009 Palmer stats so far: QB rating 60.8/2,547 yards/16 TD's/10 iNT's
Some fun pics from Lions game

with our D banged up and no deep threat how
could I expect them to win this Sunday. Sorry!! Unless there are some changes this week. Tank, Crocker, Peko and God who knows who else is banged up. Carson and the WRs need to have some special time together this week to get on the same page, along with the Oline. The freaking penalties are a killer. Hope they prove me wrong. The Vikes will stack eight in the Box and stop the run, so the deep threat, well, there is none. By the way, great photos!
it's football
people are always banged up. we’ve been banged up most of the season and still have a top 5 d. i’d rather not worry about the vikings and if we lose, then complain. but to say we can’t unleash a passing game when we’re not sure what they have up their sleeve is self defeating.
the penalties definitely have to stop though.
I’m curious when you think Chad stopped being a deep threat. He’s averaging 14.7 yards per catch, which is about on par with guys like Andre Johnson (14.9), Randy Moss (15.6), Reggie Wayne (12.5), Donald Driver (15.6), Calvin Johnson (15.5), Larry Fitzgerald (11.7)….If Chad isn’t a deep threat, then I guess neither are any of these guys.
The fact is that we aren’t throwing the deep ball this year because it’s not in our gameplan.
This is our year!
He looked pretty "deep threat"
on that 54 yard TD catch. They just have to use him more like that, he can make corners look foolish, one of the best route runners in the NFL.

when they double team chad
and sit their one safety up close in the middle, there is know deep threat! Chad burned the db’s in that situation, the safety, that was to cover him also was, PLAYING UP TO CLOSE. That throw doesn’t happen but once every 3-4 games. Or if somebody else is opposite Chad, like Henry…(see before Henry got hurt) And for Chad being a deep threat, he is but has to do more to get open b/c of being double teamed all the time.
Curious, why?
“2. If we win the coin toss FREAKING DEFER to the second half”
just curious. I have no preference, although if ya score first you set the tone I guess.
I guess a winning record brings out freaks.
its just the opposite
your defense can set the tone+you get the ball after halftime

But
You want to get out to a quick lead, but defer to the second half? Putting 7 points up to start the game is pretty great.
by brandone on Dec 8, 2009 4:40 PM EST via mobile reply actions
Yep sure do!
by stopping the opposing offense with a 3 and out. a quick lead doesnt have to mean the very first drive of the game. Seriously guys I think you peeps just want to argue with me
CB85......Collaros for Heisman
by TennBengalfan on Dec 8, 2009 6:29 PM EST up reply actions
That would be great
But there’s no guarantee we’ll stop them with a 3 and out. I’d rather have the chance to go up 7. I know what you’re saying and agree with your line of thought. I just feel especially with favre that he’ll try to force the issue to get those 7 back right away.
by brandone on Dec 8, 2009 7:06 PM EST via mobile up reply actions
agree but....
there is no guarantee that we score on the first drive either, especially with there All Star defense. they just have to play football, I just prefer kicking off to start the game. It will be hard to run against there front four, I think the passing game will be the main key, and keeping Palmer upright.
CB85......Collaros for Heisman
by TennBengalfan on Dec 8, 2009 7:09 PM EST up reply actions
And keeping Palmer upright is the key to the passing game
I think exploiting allen’s over aggressive style of play is the key to running on their d. Because you’re not going up the middle.
And not getting penalties.
by brandone on Dec 8, 2009 11:55 PM EST via mobile up reply actions
There!!!! dont want to hear about the coin flip anymore
When we are in the open thread during games everybody wants to defer, but you get in here you want it first, which is it? I want to defer, you may not, its your opinion. Me, I have more confidence in our defense right now than our offense, so yes I want to defer and it always feels nice to get points right before the half and come back out in the second half to get the ball, “that is pretty great.” Nobody wants to comment on the post just one little line about defering to the second half. So I took it off, you want to discuss that? Make a post. you can get a quick lead without getting the ball first, Our defense can stop them on the first drive and a quick lead means in the first quarter it dont have to be right off the bat!! But it will be nice to get a pick 6, A punt return, or a quick big play on our first play or two. Seriously I have never seen a bigger deal made out of a coin flip except the Jerome Bettis “we called heads.” Nobody wants to talk about the bad pass game, or Ocho and Benson almost at a 1000 yards, We are one game from the division, Ocho is 185 yards from 10,000 career yards, double teaming Jared Allen, etc….
CB85......Collaros for Heisman
to beat the vikes...
…. We don’t have to do anything different, just do what we do better. Like you said – eliminate the penalties, protect Palmer, don’t turn the ball over, control the ball, control the clock, pressure Favre, and a stout run D . Well be fine.
by goffchile on Dec 8, 2009 6:42 PM EST via mobile reply actions
I agree a bunch (thank you for not talking about the coin flip)
The penalties are killers, no way we beat the Vikings with all the penalties we had Sunday. Protecting Palmer will be Key, especially against the front 4 of the vikings which all made the pro bowl last year.

People cant take a joke 4 real, just like the Coats comment I made
they really think that I think that will be a key to victory? playing the game is the key to victory, protecting Palmer is a key to victory, eliminating the penalties is a key to victory, but i prefer getting the ball after half. It’s just nice to score right before half and get it coming out of halftime, or if the opposing team scores before half they wont get it right after half.

when you win with defense
And you plan on fighting a field position battle , defering makes a lot of sense. Also weather and wind are issues. Nice to have the wind at your back in the 4th if that applies.

it wont apply this week
being we are in the dome, But like all the ESPN “experts” and I think that it will be a hard hitting matchup. I don’t think it will be a very high scoring game, I actually believe that it will be more of a Defensive game possibly a 16-13 game

by TennBengalfan on Dec 8, 2009 7:22 PM EST up reply actions
i always say if you’re focusing on one stat as the most important to victory, it’s time of possession. that tells you how long your drives are lasting, and how well you’re doing at tiring out the opposing defense. we’ve controlled the ball for over 38 minutes in each of the last three games, which is the reason i have to laugh at the people who speak of our “offensive struggles”, because clearly our gameplan is working if we’re holding the ball for that long. the only reason we lost to the raiders was the second most important stat, turnovers. so i say we beat minnesota the same way we’ve beaten other teams this year: control the ball and hold onto the ball.
okay, technically, i guess score would be the most important stat in a game, but let’s just ignore that.
and for the record, i’d defer too.
i'm going to go america all over your ass!
yes we have been winning games that way vs inferior teams
but we will have problem running against teams like Minnesota with their top ranked rush defense. its not offensive struggles its mainly Palmer struggles, he just has to step up this game because I have the feeling we will have to throw to win this one
CB85......Collaros for Heisman
by TennBengalfan on Dec 8, 2009 8:35 PM EST up reply actions
And the penalties we have been making....
I consider those struggles, I dont laugh that much at those I mainly scream, dont really laugh at the bad throws and interceptions either. We havent been struggling with the run, but if we can continue to run like that vs Minnesota and win I’m all for it, I just dont see it playing out that way
CB85......Collaros for Heisman
by TennBengalfan on Dec 8, 2009 8:38 PM EST up reply actions
as long as we win Rage im all for it
If Benson can run vs the Vikes like he has against the rest of the NFC North he deserves MVP consideration. The front 4 of the Vikings all went to the Pro bowl last year. they held Beanie to pretty much nothing (I know Benson is better)
CB85......Collaros for Heisman
by TennBengalfan on Dec 8, 2009 8:44 PM EST up reply actions
and we won that way against superior teams
if we didn’t have trouble running against baltimore (twice, no less) and their defense that hadn’t given up a 100-yard rusher in 40 games, what makes you believe we’ll have trouble running against minnesota? and i’d argue that carson’s receivers have been his main struggle, as coles and coats have been drop machines. but i agree with you that the penalties have been ridiculous.
i'm going to go america all over your ass!
you got a point, inferior teams meaning the past 3 games (shoulda had raider game)
and Coats and Coles have both been terrible, I just got that feeling that we wont be able to run like we have against the other teams. Trust me I hope we can!! cuz I dont have confidence in Coles and Palmer right now, Palmer has just been so inconsistent lately, he will play well a few plays then do something that makes him look like a rookie or something, I dont know if its the injuries or what he just seems skiddish sometimes.

i’m not going to argue the carson thing, because i’ve been having that argument with people for a few years and i’m tired of it; at this point, i accept that people have an opinion of carson and i can’t control it, much like people’s opinions on chad. i just disagree.
i hope the sloppiness is out of everyone’s system (especially bobbie williams, ‘cause i don’t know what’s been up with him lately), and i have faith that it is, because this team has shown all season that they keep it tight for the big games.
i'm going to go america all over your ass!
true about stepping up for big games
no I dont think Palmer is completely bad, its just really gone downhill since we lost slim and the past few games. the beginning of the year he looked great especially during the Bears game and I thought he was good before this season, Im mainly just talking about here recently. I know how good he is, that is what frustrates me, I know he can be better, in my opinion he is a top five qb and should be up there with the Brees’s, Brady’s, Manning’s, of the world

i’ve just been really frustrated with some of the things i’ve read and heard about carson over the last few years; i know i’ve even seen somebody on this blog saying that we should get rid of carson in favor of tim “the next kordell stewart” tebow.
i'm going to go america all over your ass!

He is way better than TIMMY TEBOW lol
CB85......Collaros for Heisman
by TennBengalfan on Dec 8, 2009 9:14 PM EST up reply actions
That is just ludicrous
Tebow will not be a good QB in the NFL unless he is drafted by a team who has ten other established guys around him. Period. Tebow was exposed in the Bama game.
For the record(and I always say this in Open Threads as well) we should defer the coin toss.
by Danimal, Destroyer of Worlds on Dec 9, 2009 12:13 AM EST up reply actions
hell, anybody who’s watched tebow throw can expose him easily enough. where he holds the ball makes him a fumble machine in the pro game, for one thing; it also leads to his leftwich-esque windup. and it’s not like any of his throws are particularly accurate. he just hopes that his receivers can catch anything thrown within 10 yards of them.
i'm going to go america all over your ass!

Na trust me I know he is great
Just wonder why he hasnt been playing that way past few weeks. I dont know if he is hurt, or if it is lack of confidence in his receivers or what, because when he throws to Ocho he is on the Money but when he hits other guys it just looks like he hesitates or something. I think also him and Foschi have good timing I think he trust Foschi, but freaking Coats I wouldnt throw him my sweat towel on the sideline he drops everything

He needs to be cut and that is what I’m talking about with adjusting to situations. Look at how long it took them to cut BSL. Chance after chance, he’s going to cost us a game, that is important.

as i’ve stated before, i have this conspiracy theory that coats is really like one of those guys from “field of dreams”. if he crosses the goal line with the ball in his hands, he turns into an old man; hence, his drops all occur, inconveniently enough, near the end zone.

Sorry to be lurking on your site but saw this post while i was in Ask a Norseman and thought I’d reply. If your looking for a safe easy way to pass on Minnesota look to your Tight End we’ve been notoriously bad at picking them up. I’m not sure how good your tight end is, but he could be the hero of the day. As for running against us if we have Winfield back the outsides will be tough to get to, Phat Pat and Keven have been pretty dominate on the middle and jared Allen will have a line backer behind him because well, he’s a pass rusher first, mullet wearing hick second and run stuffer way back in 6th or 7th…
Personally, I would defer the coin toss. But that’s just because I’m so dang polite…
As long as we're not throwing to Coats
Balls thrown to TE’s in our offense are caught, most of the time.
by Danimal, Destroyer of Worlds on Dec 9, 2009 11:40 AM EST up reply actions
Then you should be fine especially with EJ out
The middle flat area will be pretty open. Makes my tear up just thinking about it… By the way I’m really interested in seeing how AD can do against your run defense you guy are super stout on that. I’ve been making bank off of your teams defense for a couple of weeks now it’s a shame I can’t play them this week…]
Oh and who is coats? Sounds like you guys want to try cutting his hair with a lawn mower.
Foshi is the much better recieving Tight End.
Coats is the extra smaller lineman who can’t catch a cold type of TE.
There’s a reason you don’t know who Coats is – He has personally cost us at least 4 TD’s this year that I can think of with dropped passes. If you see him wide open in the flat, don’t bother covering the guy. His hands are like ice blocks (which makes him a great blocker and a terrible receiver).
I’m worried that AD is going to have a field day with our D-Line suffering this week.
This is our year!
Well our O-Line was pretty busted up last week
So it could be just a question of who is more injured during the game. We should at least have all of our starters in again which will be nice. Personally, I thought you guys would be more worried about our passing attack since Favre has been doing really well lately.
Are you not worried because you D excells at pass defense?
were not worried
because last time we played Favre we got 5 INT’s on him.
