Last week was again a little bit better than the previous. It was at least decent (most of the time) instead of partially sucking. If we keep improving at this rate we'll be playing really good football in time for the Chargers game, and I suppose that we do want to be playing our best by then if we want any shot at the #2 seed. And last week our defense and our offense both scored points -- both in the real game and in this one as well. Unfortunately, nobody picked the defensive players involved. Well maybe next time.
Up next we have the Vikings, a team that until last week was getting props for being the best in the league despite having lost to the Steelers (whom we beat twice and are currently a .500 club). Well they are a very good team, with a very good defense and quite a good offense as well, but until and unless they win the Super Bowl they aren't the best team in the league this year. Period. Two other teams are currently undefeated and a .500 team beat them. And that's before Arizona made them look, well, quite bad in fact. Is our defense up to the task of harassing Farve into some more turnovers? We started his career, after all, it would be entirely appropriate for us to turn around and end it as well. Well we probably can't do that on our own, but we can certainly contribute to the chances of him retiring for good after the season. And then the other big question is can we still run despite the "Williams Wall", and can we protect Carson from Jared Allen, who supposedly feels sorry for us since we have to play them after they just got embarrassed on national TV. (I hope Lewis has enough sense to have that quote on the bulletin boards around the locker room this week.)
Time to place your bets. Do you expect an offensive shootout? We've got plenty of WRs and RBs to pick for the scores here. Do you expect a defensive slug-fest? We've got some secondary players who can catch INTs and linemen who can force fumbles now, so maybe they are the way to go instead. Either way, pick your player to hang your hat on, and best of luck to all.
The scoring recap post from last week is repeated here as well:
Once again, our boys in black and orange played down to the competition. At least we won. And yeah, I know Megatron is a beast and all that, but how in the world did Tom Nelson outplay — or at least out-stat except for tackles — both JJoe and Hall combined? Oh well, no more, on to the scoring.
This week we at least had some scoring. That’s a major plus that will make some people happy. And with 17 people picking a name that at least remotely resembles a football player that gives a max score of 16 points for the week. But I can’t wait for us to play a real opponent again. If we play up to the competition next weekend we should have lots of scoring and I for one am well ready to see it. Anyway, Chad Ochocinco, Tom Nelson (x2), and Jonathan Fanene (x3) all scored by the rules of the game, but only Chad was picked in the list above. I would like to give Michael Johnson some love for tipping the ball Fanene took to the house, but the best I can do for him is honorable mention. Still glad to see the kid making plays. One of these days…
So here is our weekly scoring only:
The Dealio – 15 pts (Chad Ochocinco)
Danimal – 15 pts (Chad Ochocinco)This leaves us with a nine week leader board of:
1 (tie) – brandone – 78 pts

If you haven't played yet, here is a brief recap of the rules:
1) Pick one player (Make it easy on me, make him the title of your post. Both first and last name please.) who is NOT officially listed as a QB, P, or PK on the roster.
2) An offensive score is worth one point per participant who did not pick your player.
3) A defensive player is worth 3/2/1 point per participant who did not pick your player based on if he 3) actually scored, 2) gained possession of the ball for the team but didn't actually score, or 1) allowed the Bengals to gain possession by causing a fumble (or blocking a kick) that another Bengals player recovered. Sacks or tackles behind the line of and by themselves are not worth anything unless they are a strip-sack (1 point if we recover) or they are also a safety (3 points).
4) You score the maximum possible points for your player but only one time. So a defensive player who forces an opponent's fumble that Cincinnati recovers and recovers another opponent's fumble at a different point in the game is worth 2x points (not 3x cumulative).
5) Keep commentary to the bare minimum please.
6) Predictions on how they will score are not required, and if you provide one they don't net you any bonus if you are right nor do they detract if you are wrong (so long as they do actually score by game rules).
7) Try to be original yet still pick somebody you think has a realistic chance to score or cause a turnover.
8) Only ONE (1) player entry per contestant, per week is allowed.
9) Deadline for player entries each week is THIRTY (30) minutes prior to kickoff.

Laveranues Coles
On a side note, that might be the hardest first name in the NFL to spell.

He’s been a little too quiet… and we were able to get to the QB last week.

Also
Can’t you give Michael Johnson some love under the causing a fumble or blocking a kick clause? I think a tipped pass that is intercepted could fall under that category. Just an opinion.
by The Dealio on Dec 10, 2009 11:22 AM EST reply actions 0 recs
I thought about it. But the block kick was instituted because it is, essentially, the same thing as causing a fumble. I also was willing to make that tweak because blocked kicks are rather rare. But tipped passes happen every day, even if they don’t all result in turnovers. Plus they are very much not like forcing a fumble. A blocked kick that hits the ground (at least for a punt) is a live ball, and a blocked FG that hits the ground is still a turnover. But a blocked pass that hits the ground is an incomplete pass.
So I’ll have to say sorry, but as much as I sympathize — especially considering just how little scoring most of us have gotten of late — I think that’s just too much of a stretch.

I can sympathise
With that tip, Bengals won’t lose that last minute game to the Broncos. So that little tip is important. Without Michael Johnson’s tip, may be Fanene won’t get to the ball and there will not be a runback for the score. It is too difficult to judge the importance of a tip but I would lobby that the tip is a part of the play that resulted in the score. Sure tipped passes happen often but how many result in a score? More likely just an interception. Given that it resulted in a score, we need to look at all the participants in that score. Question is then why do you score player who stripped the ball and also player who recovered the fumble? A tip ball is just like a ball being stripped because it changed direction.

Fingers were writing too fast
I meant if the ball was not tipped in the Broncos game, the Bengals would not have lost the game.

On one hand that makes some sense. On the other hand, tips are not a stat that I can check on NFL.com. That alone makes a HUGE difference, primarily in difficulty of scoring the game. I only mentioned MJ’s tip because I saw it live, and even then I couldn’t tell 100% for sure who it was who’d tipped it even from the replay. NFL mentioned him on the play-by-play so I assumed he was the one who had tipped it, but there’s no proof in some sort of official stat.
Then you add in the fact that I made blocked kicks a change only because I hadn’t considered them before, whereas I HAD considered tips and said no. So I made that change because it was a situation I hadn’t considered, whereas tips and deflections I had considered and chose against.
Finally, what happens if the ball bounces off the offensive player for the other team and then we intercept it. Should somebody who picked an opposing player get a point? It gets pretty complex, and possibly even ridiculous, very fast. And then what about the time when NFL.com gave the forced fumble to Crocker when JJoe had put the first — indeed most — of the hitting on the player and I’m still of the opinion that he caused “more” of the fumble than Crocker.
Perhaps we can consider it next year, but that’s a bit too much of a wholesale change too late in the year. It also makes it where there is no reason to pick offensive players if too many defensive players score in too many ways. Plus I’d have at least some weeks to go back and re-score with such a change and that’s not fair to everybody else involved. And finally it’s just too complex when I have to make judgment calls on who gets points. Then either I can’t play or I’m having to be ultra careful to not favor my own picks, which turns the level of stress up for me… or we need an appeals committee, and from about 20 regular players where are we going to find that?

Leon Hall
I was tempted to go with Fanene, but even though I’d love for him to repeat I doubt it will happen. I’m half afraid that Leon isn’t getting any balls thrown his way anymore because he’s too good, so just what we need to help me out, a gunslinger opposing QB, right?

OK, unlike last time we lost I’m not having a hard time writing this one. At least the Saints won, nailbiter though it was, which helps ease the pain of my AFC team deciding to self-destruct with penalties. Have I mentioned here that I really can’t stand the Falcons? It was extra sweet getting to knock them out of (realistic, at least) playoff contention in the process. Technically they could sneak in but they’d need a lot of help.
OK enough blathering, on to this game. When we were shooting our own foot of in that game we were letting Brett and AP shoot it off for us. But we did at least score some points for people playing this game. I suppose that’s a bit of a consolation prize. With 17 participants that means a max “uniqueness” score of 16. Chad Ochocinco found the endzone and Brat actually did a good job on that play call. One is better than none, right? And Leon Hall (x2) finally got a pick after too many weeks of nada. Pity JJoe couldn’t hold onto his. That would have been very nice indeed.
So here is our weekly scoring only:
WHYUS!! – 28 points (Leon Hall)
The Dealio – 28 points (Leon Hall)
FriarBob – 28 points (Leon Hall)
CincyMike56 – 15 points (Chad Ochocinco)
Purple City Middie – 15 points (Chad Ochocinco)
This leaves us with an eleven week leader board of:
1 – FriarBob – 106 pts
2 – The Dealio – 87 pts
3 – CincyMike56 – 82 pts
4 – brandone – 78 pts
5 – Richard L – 74 pts
