Am I Alone in Wondering Conspiracies?
The fact that last play wasn’t challenged is mind boggling.
Fumble or incomplete pass, no one – not even a Steelers fan – could argue that the call shouldn’t have been reviewed. Had the call been overturned, Arizona would have had the ball on the Pittsburgh 29 with roughly 8 seconds left – time for a minimum of one attempt into the endzone. Had the play been confirmed by replay then this conversation might be moot. It’s not moot.
Or how about Santonio Holmes TD celebration? (using the ball as a prop, he mimicked LeBron James’ chalk-toss) …I guess the refs forgot that was a 15 yd penalty for excessive and/or illegal celebration. …the outcome certainly WOULDN’T have been different had the Steelers had to kickoff from their 15 instead of the 30…
Wow. Referees determining the outcomes of games. Infuriating.
Even beyond the absurd ending, what about the almost consecutive unsportsmanlike conduct penalties against the Cardinals on a key Pittsburgh scoring drive? One was a phantom roughing the passer call against Roethlisberger. Funny too, I remember a very similar call in the Baltimore game a few weeks back. (Lets not get into the phantom roughing the punter call in that same game or we will REALLY digress) However, if that roughing the passer call wasn't enough, how about the 15 yard face mask penalty by an Arizona defender who coincidentally was having his very face mask twisted simultaneously by the same player he was deemed to have fouled?
Or how about the refs blatantly botching two calls in the Steelers favor that the Cardinals were luckily able to overturn thanks to replay?
We could also talk about the penalties – 106 yards by the Cardinals to just 56 by the Steelers.
Listen, I know certain penalties or judgment calls are sometimes missed or botched by referees. I understand they’re human and that the “human element” is part of the game. But does anyone wonder why the Steelers always seem to be on the favorable end of such controversial calls? And now for a second time in 4 years the Steelers have won a Super Bowl amid a myriad of controversial calls. Does anyone think this is fishy?
I do.
The 2006 Super Bowl was a complete joke. I don’t need to re-explain how terrible the officiating was in that game.
Unfortunately, this game smells just like Super Bowl XL. Does the NFL have a vested interest in seeing the Steelers win? The Steelers do after all have by far the biggest fan following in perhaps all of sports. Could the NFL be secretly pulling for the Steelers to get into the Big Game…and ultimately win it? Just think of all the NFL licensed apparel, merchandise and ticket sales that will now certainly increase. I’m sure the NFL doesn’t mind this at all. I mean, revenues are shared throughout the league.
One can only wonder.

I think the moral of the story is...
Keep the Steelers out of the Super Bowl…because once they’re in, the refs will just take it from there.
I saw missed holding call after missed holding call (I about fell out of my chair when they actually called the holding in the end zone that resulted in a safety, but the defender was dang-near tackled on that play…they had to call it!) and yes, I was seething at the phantom roughing the passer call, as well as the equal grabbing of facemasks that somehow ended up favoring the Steelers.
And yes…If Ocho Cinco had pulled that chalk-toss celebration (especially using the ball as a prop, which is clearly and specifically against the rules!), the flags would have been pouring onto the field from all directions!
I don’t want to sound all “sour grapes” over the Squealers’ Super Bowl win…it’s just that true NFL fans (not bandwagon fans who will now go out and buy up all the merchandise you mentioned above) actually like to see the Super Bowl champion actually win the game, not just come out on top as a result of getting more calls in their favor than the other team did.
I didn’t see any of the post-game show, but if Holmgren didn’t have an on-air apoplexy over this, they must have shot him with a tranquilizer dart before they turned on the cameras!

Last Play and Penalty Yards
Good point on last play. Wonder if they did take a look at the last play in the booth? Seemed to me to be an incompletion rather than a fumble. Announcers should have made more out of that and just glossed over it.
Disparity in penalty yards was mostly attributable to Gandy-Harrison matchup. Harrison is a beast and Gandy was a step slow all night.

The announcers were in too much of a hurry.
They wanted to crown ’em…so they CROWNED their asses!

you...we are not alone
Conspirators rejoice! There certainly does seem to be an element of predetermination in the game today. Its pretty easy to see that the Jordan rule also applies in football.Honestly, did anyone really think the Cardinals have a chance?96penalty yards forCards to the 15 on the Steelers?Really? All in the third quarter when it seemed the Cards were picking up momentum? The outcome would have been the same if it were the Bengals vs.the Cowboys or the 49ers vs.the Texans.Considering the NFL gets the large percentages of NFL licensed products ,why would they not want a team with a large fan base and contingent of fair weather fans to be victorious over an upstart team that would sell merchandise almost regionally? Why lose revenues selling Cardinals gear when the Steelers sell world wide.Mr.Goodell are you reading this? We’re on to your b.s…motherf’r.

I'm with you Walrus
I completely agree. It’s funny too. On Monday morning I had 2 emails in my junk box from the “NFL Store” with the subject line, “Get Your Steelers Super Bowl XLIII Gear Here!”
If that doesn’t confirm our thoughts, what will?

Mike B.
Decent point about the Harrison matchup…but I disagree. That’s not where the disparity was. Take 30 yards in penalties away from the Cardinals on what I believe was consecutive plays (if not consecutive…there might have been 1 play in between) where “Unsportsmanlike Conduct” was called for a phantom roughing the passer call and a mutual facemask by both players.
If you eliminate those two B.S. penalties then it’s almost even.
Oh and go ahead and take the 3 points off the board that the Steelers collected on that drive. That MAYBE had an affect on the game.
And oh yeah, also assume that we should be adding 15 yards in penalties for the Steelers for the missed “Unsportsmanlike Conduct” call on Holmes’ celebration.
Yeah, it’s indisputable, the NFL capitalizes on the Steelers winning and it’s obvious that they take drastic measures to ensure the Steelers DO win.

No Call
The irony is that the game was over officiated…18 penalties, 162 yards and the game ends basically on a no-call. We all sat waiting for an officials timeout for a review that never came. Conspiracy, I don’t know, the Steelers do seem to get the benefit of many doubts but I always figured it was their whining that officials were trying to avoid, the old squeaky wheel getting the grease.

Last year's super bowl
I agree that the game was terribly officiated and the Cards got burned several times on non-calls or bogus calls against them. In the end it was Harrison’s 100 yard pick that really sealed there fate, especially if they had of got a score out of it and went into half time tied or atleast down by 4, that really changed the momentum of the game and gave the Squealers the win. I don’t know I’d go as far as saying the NFL is out to put good teams in better position to win the SB then underdogs like the Cards. Look at the Giants last year for example. That team was a Cinderella that was able to knock-off the proverbial Goliath so to speak and end what would have sold millions in the form of a 19-0 season. If anything could be a marketing ploy it would be the entire Northeast United States reppin’ 19-0 Patriots T-shirts. I’d have to disagree with the fact that because the Squealers are now America’s team that it was done intentionally. They were just the better team and had the misfortune of having timely plays go in their favour. Now i hate the Steelers as mucha s the next guy, but i’d rather see Steelers 6 time champs t-shirt then Patriots 19-0 bullshit
