Who Dey? Who Dey?
Hello, Bengals fans! I'm a member of Bleeding Green Nation (SB Nation's resident Philadelphia Eagles blog) and I have the honor of representing your beloved Benglas in our internal interactive mock draft. Though I have a superficial sense of your team's remaining offseason needs and wants, I'd appreciate any additional insight you could provide to inform my decision as to your potential draft picks. Here are some questions to get you guys started, but feel free to add anything else you think might be relevant.
- What positions on the roster are most in need of starter-caliber help?
- What's your philosophy on drafting best player available versus locking in on team needs?
- The #6 pick is a high profile, high money pick that can make or break your salary cap and your coaches reputation. Would you prefer to draft a high-risk/high-reward type player, or would you be satisfied drafting a safer, known-commodity player with a lower upside?
- Is there a chance that you would use your top pick for anything besides an offensive or defensive lineman?
- Is coach Marvin Lewis on the hot seat and does he need to risk turning the team around now via a few key additions, or can he take his time and continue to building on a solid foundation?
That's really all I've come up with so far, but I'm sure you guys have thought of plenty of things that I haven't yet. I thank you for your help in advance.

curry
if curry is available, you have to grab him.
he won’t be, so get the best offensive lineman unless its andre smith then trade back if anyone is willing to do so
do not pick a wr or a rb. if you cant trade from the position and smith is the only ot left of the best 4, grab raji or orapko
Count on this for certain...
Whatever we the fans think the worst case scerio is, THAT’S the route the Bengals will go with the first pick in the draft.
For example…you’d think the Bengals don’t need a WR because they have CJ, just added Coles, and drafted 2 young guys last year, right?? Wrong. ….they’ll take Crabtree.
Or…
You’d think they wouldn’t draft a DE because they have a lot of money tied up in Geathers and Odom, right? Wrong. They’ll take a DE/OLB.
THE POINT IS THIS: WHATEVER SOUNDS LOGICAL, COUNT ON THE OPPOSITE TO HAPPEN.

Pick is in...
Thanks for your advice. I found searching through the blogs at Cincy Jungle to be invaluable on researching the Bengals and their draft needs.
Click here to read the justification for the pick.
I’d love to hear your reaction.

Depth
Just because I think they can wait until the second round a still get a great OL, lots of OL depth in this year’s draft. Give Zimmer a stud DT and watch what happens.
RE:
Hey I won’t argue B.J. Raji, that dude is considered by most the best DT in the draft — something we looked at last year with Sedrick Ellis and Glenn Dorsey.
However, and this is strictly my opinion, the Bengals have three young defensive tackles — Peko who is the team’s best tackle at this point, SIms who is an encouraging up-and-coming DT and Shirley is, well, we just don’t know. Bringing in another would mean they’d have to rotate three at least. Which, in reality, is how teams do it to keep the line strong and fresh.
But a sixth pick for a guy that would only rotate in, compared to an o-line that would play all (provided health isn’t an issue) of the snaps? It would seem to me that the value of the sixth pick, in this NFL draft and based on our needs, not luxuries, would be better used with an o-line.
I can accept that the Bengals draft an OT in the second round, but what about center? What about running back after the second round?
I agree, a DT would be awesome. But in truth, an argument could be made to upgrade all the positions on the team.
What do you think?

Great points all and we certainly have problems at center. I just want to see as much depth on defense as possible. Imagine Raji and Peko occupying three guys in the middle, Rivers running free and Odom potentially doing his thing. In my opinion the only way you beat Pittsburgh and Baltiomore is with defense. Who Dey
RE:
Yea, depth at defense sounds nice. Would be sweet to have a defense that other teams start worrying about, for sure!

Yes
With a top 6 pick, it is a must to take a difference maker, a guy that the whole league will notice. O-Line is a priority but I think they can get help with that between rounds 2 and 4. Marvin has been hell bent on stopping the run since his time in Cincy. This will be a huge help. Rotate him in with Peko and Sims and the D-Line will be sick.
want to stop the run?
Draft Raji and sign Roy Williams….sounds pretty simple to me
