Laveranues Coles will visit Cincinnati on Tuesday
Just as the Houshmandzadeh story broke, Bengals.com beat writer Geoff Hobson writes that Laveranues Coles is due to make a visit on Tuesday.
A league source said that the Bengals have reached out to Coles but they couldn't get him into Cincinnati Monday because of the bad weather back East but he's expected Tuesday.
If there's any consolidation to losing Houshmandzadeh, it's that Coles is actually younger than T.J. (by three months) and has put up as productive numbers. However, not so much recently.

funny thing is Brown will probably over-pay him instead of finishing a deal for Housh

Coles has had some really good seasons and should benefit playing next to Chad but should the Bengals actually consider Crabtree? With Chad being Chad in the off season we could use a long term solution in WR with drafting Crabtree.

My take.
Nothing has really changed, in truth. We really were resigned that Houshmandzadeh was gone, the fact it got prolonged like this was kind of surprising. However, really nothing has changed. Obtaining a veteran FA WR was always in the plans.
We believe, well, some of us at least, that we still need to strengthen and solidify our offensive line to keep Palmer off the ground in order for WRs to even be effective. Or else we’ll see Palmer on the sidelines with a quarterback that we haven’t signed yet.
I believe that we have to rebuild the line through the draft, where, I’m not sure and five teams pick ahead of us, so it’s hard to forecast. But at that point, it’s just my opinion.

I Agree
The offensive line does need to be rebuilt and only time will tell whether or not Mike Brown will actually try to screw this up too.

My Only Concern
I agree with you Kirkendall, except that with the loss of both TJ and Benson are we stretched to thin on relying on the draft. Sure I don’t think the philosophy has changed in the short-term (drafting OT at #6) but even from the beginning of the day it looked like we might have atleast one RB locked up. Even with either War or Benson or even both it looked like an RB was still a pressing need, now we look worse off then last season and might have to rely on two picks to fill RB positions, taking away from depth picks at DL and OL.
Forget about Housh, with him or without him I think the young guys deserve a chance and WR will be much improved with Palmer healthy of course. But with us relying on taking a few picks away from the OL to fill out our roster at skilled positions we are taking a serious step back by not addressing depth issues via Free Agency
Doesn’t every team atleast try to claim they “build through the draft”. Yes of course, but these teams also bolster there lineups with proven veterans and after awhile were going to have a mutiny on a sinking ship.
How long is Carson going to stay happy when he’s chased out of the pocket, playing for a team that does very little to enhance there chances of winning by atleast putting together (and sometimes overpaying) for Free Agents. Sometimes you get ripped off to secure key players in key positions and now we sit in a spot with very litte depth on the OL or DL and wasting picks on positions like RB because Brown wont get off his a$$ and attempt to sign anyone

I for one would be happy to get Coles
Over paying for Housh, over paying for Coles. Same difference. He was a solid WR for the Jets and is the same age as Housh (close enough). With Carson throwing, he could be a stud.
TJ didn’t want to be with Cincy. If he signed, he probably wouldn’t be happy and maybe even a lockerroom distraction. If Coles wants to be in Bengal stripes then I’m all for it.

at this point it seems like no one wants to be in Bengal stripes
(see Benson, Ward, Housh, Ocho) I can go on
