2009 SBNation Mock Draft

As promised, Sports Blog Nation has sounded the gun for our annual mock draft. Two rounds. Three picks per day. All 32 teams. This is an open thread to discuss our picks and how other teams affect our picks. I'll keep this on the front page for now, but this will be listed as a FanPost on the right.

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Cincy Jungle's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Cincy Jungle's writers or editors.

Mocking the Draft

The site, Mocking the Draft, will have detailed analysis on the draft selections and how the respective blogger came to drafting that player.

Oh noes

That’s the top 3 on my board. If I was drafting, I’m hoping Raji makes it to our spot.

So whats our board look like now?

Here is my current big board if those are the first 3 off the board.

1.) Andre Smith T/Alabama

Reason: Yes, he has off the field question marks, about weight, intelligence and rumored drug user.. hint rumored. But on the field he is bar none the best tackle in this years draft. That’s right. He is better than Eugene Monroe, he is better than Jason Smith, on the field… he is the best thing for the Bengals. He is not your prototypical LT like Smith/Monroe/Oher, he is projected to be that RT in the NFL, something that the Bengals do not have right now. Are you taking a risk off the field with Andre Smith? Yes. But the guy can straight up block and protect.

2.) Chris Beanie Wells RB/Ohio State
Reason: The guy is 6’1" 235 pounds and runs a 4.4. He has breakaway speed, he has strength, he has the ability to make people miss, he can catch the ball he is a 30 pounds lighter version of Brandon Jacobs. While matching him and Cedric Benson might not make sense, but Cedric could be cut after next year if he does not perform. Some will say, “what is the point of getting a RB if you dont have an OL?” Well considering there is a chance we get up to 4 comp picks, the OL will be built, stocked, and loaded come after the draft.

3.) Michael Oher T/Ole Miss
Reasons: If Andre Smith is off the board, you can go ahead and select this prototypical LT, with flashes of brillance on the field. This time last year if he would of entered the draft, he would of been selected in the top 5. He only got better with his senior year. He has problems with being inconsistant, getting too high up on his blocking, and having bad footwork, but with him being inconsistant, he is more consistant. You can have 2-3 inconsistant plays, but the other 28-30 plays he will be on the ball and dominant. I dont care about his “intelligence” Michael Oher can play and learn the NFL playbook. End of story.

Those are the only 3 players I would touch in the 1st round with pick 6.

No BJ Raji because we have way too much money spent on Peko, and we have a 3rd and 5th round steal in Pat Sims and Jason Shirley.

by "Mr. NC-17" on Mar 23, 2009 12:44 PM EDT reply actions

Which of Jason Shirley’s 4 tackles last year would indicate that he’s a steal?

by bodacio on Mar 23, 2009 3:40 PM EDT up reply actions

Just wait and watch… If Shirley did not have red flags he would of been in projection of a 2nd or 3rd round.

i vote Andre

But I guess you could’ve seen that coming….

Interesting find, you may have seen it already, but on his blog site, John Thorton agrees that A. Smith is the pick (with Monroe and J. Smith also theoretically off the board):

“The pick- Alabama OT Andre Smith. I know he is the joke of the first round right now, but this guy has talent and should be a top five pick. If you go off of his college tape, he is a top five pick. But leaving the combine early, and getting suspended for Alabama’s BCS Bowl game have dropped Andre’s stock. I have a feeling that teams will dig deeper into what has happened over the past few months and get more comfortable with this kid. Cincinnati will take a lot of heat for making this selection because experts like to pick on the Bengals anyway, but if the team is truly looking to upgrade it’s offensive line and truly looking to establish the line of scrimmage like coach Marvin Lewis has said since season’s end, then Andre Smith would be the guy because he has the body to switch to right tackle. He is in the mold of OT’s Willie Anderson and Stacey Andrews. Big powerful OT’s who will fit in the AFC North.”

That all being said, if the Seahawks get him at four, which is very possible, I would have to be looking hard at Oher. He was another incredible talent in college with so-called “character issues”. The downside here is that, having the ‘prototypical LT body", he doesn’t immediately have the flexibility to move to RT like A. Smith would, which means we would have to shake things up on the line a little bit. But addressing the O-Line is by far the largest team need in my eyes, and with the Browns probably going D, either Smith or Oher will be here.

by Joe27 on Mar 23, 2009 1:08 PM EDT reply actions

If Stafford and Crabtree are available when the bengals pick

we would absolutely HAVE to trade down as there would surely be offers and it makes sense for us as well. But since were not allowed to trade in this mock by board is:

1. A. Smith OT – It’s just ridiculous how many plays have passed him up when absolutely no football has been played. He should be a dominant RT and if not we could always shift him to guard and have Whitworth move out to tackle

2. M Jenkins FS – A lot of people might scoff at this but it could be the best value if the draft sakes out like this mock. Jenkins is big enough to play safety and fast enough to play corner. He would be the perfect fit for the coverage safety Zimmer has talked about us needing and would be our best option for defensive impact player since Curry is off the board.

3. M Oher OT – Kinda a risky pick because of the flashes of brilliance mixed with plays off. But he is a true LT and those don’t grow on trees.

by CincyMike56 on Mar 23, 2009 1:16 PM EDT reply actions

Same 3, different order......

The Chiefs spent BIG cash on a DT and an OT in the first round last year…..and i’m not so sure Curry is worth the #1 Pick. However, i think you have the Top 3 picks correct, just in the wrong order…….I think it will go like this….. #1 Jason Smith, #2 Eugene Monroe, and #3 Aaron Curry.

WIth that said, I think the Seahawks take Raji to upgrade their Front-4 , the Browns take Brian Orakpo or Everette Brown because either would fit their 3-4 scheme, leaving Andre Smith and Michael Oher available to the Bengals, whom have no choice but to “reach” for an OT.

You can call it a reach if you want, but remember that Alabama was firmly in control of the #1 Ranking in the BCS for the majority of 2008. The Crimson Tide’s SEC dominance was largely attributable to their Offense Line, a line that helped rack up over 2600 yards rushing last season.

As we all suffered in WhoDey Land last year, we cried and cried for an upgrade to our O-Line…….Andre Smith would anchor our line quite nicely, just as he did for ‘Bama. Call it a reach, but the Bengals were unable to address their O-Line in Free Agency, now they have no choice but to take an OT at #6. Let’s suit up Andre Smith in some Stripes, a real mauler that could handle the Jungle trenches.

Who’s ready for some AFC North Smashmouth football???

Blogger at CincyJungle.com -- SB Nation Cincinnati Bengals blog.

It HAS to be a pick on the offensive side of the ball...

As many 1st rounders as the Bengals have poured into the defense the last few years (Pollack, Joseph, Hall, Rivers), if they DON’T take advantage of the bumper crop of GOOD O-Linemen with the six, they’d better be “dead-balls-on” sure (moment of silence while we all sit here and think of Marisa Tomei) that the kid they’re picking up is a future Hall-Of-Famer. If nobody can make the case right now for Raji, Maualuga, Orakpo and others as future Hall-Of-Famers, I’m with HuDey…

And I agree about Smith’s ability and what all the Tide did last year because of a stout O-Line, but…man, I saw that weigh-in video, too…yikes!

Oher, perhaps?

And don’t forget Eric Wood with #38…[crosses fingers]…

by TheWalrus1971 on Mar 23, 2009 1:25 PM EDT reply actions

I vote Andre Smith

Andre Smith should be our pick. Think back 2 months. He was the for sure best Offensive Linemen in the draft. We would have been too happy to have him. Now fast forward and throw in his combine mistake and his flabby body at his proday, and you have crazy people talking about him falling into the 2nd round. Will Not Happen! He is too good. He is getting into better shape. If he continues to get his body into shape before the draft then i have no problem with making him our #6 pick. He should be at the very least a Pro Bowl Guard or a good Tackle, We could use any postition on our line. Take Him!

by Joe Goodberry on Mar 23, 2009 2:00 PM EDT reply actions

If we take it as a given that our choices are Andre Smith, Michael Oher, and B.J. Raji- and that there are no trades, then I’m down with Smith. A trade down, however, would allow us to get an almost as good OT- Britton/Beatty/Meredith, and probably something extra in the deal. As to Oher’s intelligence? The kid didn’t even go to school til he was ten and, yet, managed not only to qualify academically at Ole Miss but to graduate on time. I think that answers those questions.

by IgnatiusJReilly on Mar 23, 2009 2:40 PM EDT reply actions

I vote Oher. As far as I’m concerned Smith has shown us enough that we should not waste a first round pick on him. We have a chance to get a tackle which is worthy of a first round pick and does NOT have the character issues of Smith. You can make all the excuses you want for him, but this is the first round. A lot of money is at risk for a small franchise team.

Smith has the skills to be dominant but whether you like it or not, these past two months have shown off the field issues. How many players is this team going to have to go through before we figure out that the high risk is not worth it for a first round pick. Is Oher really that far of a step down, in terms of skill?

by JohnnyK on Mar 23, 2009 3:09 PM EDT reply actions

So our reward for a 4-11-1 season is a guy who can’t even get motivated enough to not show up at the combine and pro day as The Blob. It’s a good thing character issues have never been a point of contention with the Bengals. We’re just like the Patriots, right? We change the bad apples, they don’t change us…or ruin the franchise……or waste Carson Palmer in his prime…or make us the laughingstock of the NFL for 2 decades. Andre Smith it is. Anyone else smelling a breakout 3.7 YPC season for Cedric Benson?

Andre "The Giant"

Unfortunately, money has as much to do with this as morals. Look, picking 6th in the draft is punishment for going 4-11-1. It’s a punishment to have to plan for the salary cap hit. It’s a punishment to be at the top of the draft, to remind NFL fans that your team sucked in the previous year.

Mikey has overlooked character flaws before, and he’ll continue to do so, (see Jason Shirley, Pat Sims, Chris Henry, Cedric Benson…..need I continue).

Sorry, but Andre Smith is our guy. Raji would be great, Curry would be great, any Defender would be a plus, but our O-Line was TERRIBLE last year. One of the starters from that porous line was lost in Free Agency, and you’re telling me that we’re gonna pass up the chance to grab a big-time OT???? Great lineman make the likes of Glen Coffee and John Parker Wilson look like studs. We need an upper-echelon OT to step our game up ASAP. Big Bobbie Williams with Andre Smith on the Right, Anthony Collins and Andrew Whitworth on the Left……..that would be a step in the right direction.

3 yards and a pile of dust

by Hudepohl Dey on Mar 23, 2009 4:21 PM EDT reply actions

Yep

People keep saying that he is not quick enough to be a LT. Last time I checked RT was the postion on our line that is still vacant. People can trash him all they want but his off-field issues are not criminal like Thurman and Henry, they are typical mistakes that a young kid and a first time agent make. You can’t listen to all of the trash floating around. After all the hoopla, this guy will not make it past 13 and would be a steal at that point.

by smoormandiddy on Mar 23, 2009 4:29 PM EDT up reply actions

Just for the record, Pat Sims had no character issues. He quit football for a year because of the death of older sister- who had pretty much raised him. He was 18. When he came back, reports were that he worked harder than anyone else. Yes, the hiatus hurt his draft stock, enabling us to get him, but there were no character issues with Pat Sims.

by IgnatiusJReilly on Mar 23, 2009 4:47 PM EDT up reply actions

What Bengal fan needs reminded his/her team sucks? It’s a chance to take an impact, character player. Not a dude who flat out embarrassed himself in front of scouts twice. Steelers/Ravens/Patriots don’t take this kind of player. Unfortunately, we do and usually pay for it.

Bengals fans…resembling Mike Brown more by the day. Must put a special tingle in his cold, black heart.

We’re the last selection tomorrow (Tuesday), so we can spend all day figuring it out, which will allow the night crowd to weigh in.

But right now, our selection is Andre Smith.

I’ll update you guys on the selections from other teams to see if that changes anything.

Pretending Andre Smith is off the board, do we go after Michael Oher? Or defense?

but now I think a later pick, Andre Brown has passed him for me. He’s a ton like Addai, but more physical.

Raji

the choice is between the best DT and the fourth best OT? Whether we need him or not you have to take Raji at that point.

by smoormandiddy on Mar 23, 2009 8:07 PM EDT up reply actions

i don't agree

It seems as if there is a plateau of OTs this year, the top 4, who are all pretty comparable. If we pass on these, then the drop off after that seems pretty sharp. If we wait until the second round to draft OT we’ll end up with the 7th or 8th best, which would some project player. Why not address a team need with a top tier OT that can have immediate impact, rather than draft another DT when the team seems pretty set at that particular position.

by Joe27 on Mar 23, 2009 8:55 PM EDT up reply actions

Good example

Is last year’s defensive tackles. Pat Sims wasn’t the top two DT, but how much more of a difference maker were the first two (Ellis, Dorsey)?

Blogger at CincyJungle.com -- SB Nation Cincinnati Bengals blog.

by Josh Kirkendall on Mar 23, 2009 8:56 PM EDT up reply actions

This is a tough one

I do understand that we are looking good at DT right now but I have a real tough time using the 6th overall pick on the 4th best player at any given position while there will be many players available that are the best at their position. This 6 pick is going to be ugly any way you look at it. There are some real playmakers that would make a great impact on our team (offense or defense) but are considered a reach at 6. The available players at 6 will be people we really don’t want or need. ex. Orapako, Brown, Crabtree, Jenkins. Trading down is the best option even if we don’t get much (if anything) for it. We get a player that we truly want and won’t have to pay them top 6 money. Win-Win situation.

by smoormandiddy on Mar 24, 2009 8:15 AM EDT up reply actions

Did you guys see Andre Smith’s boobs and gut? That was at 325 pounds. That means he’s maybe a solid 275. You don’t draft a weak right tackle at 6. BPA. If you want a right tackle take Loadholt in the 2nd. At least one of Loadholt, Beatty and Meredith will be there for the next pick.

by kirby28 on Mar 24, 2009 6:42 AM EDT reply actions

lol

Loadholt sucks. He struggles TERRIBLY with speed rushers, watch Brian Orakpo just completely maul him, his senior bowl tape and practice were terrible. He is a big boy yes, but he will get MAULED in the NFL by left ends.

Meh… Give me the guy with a great work ethic that can’t handle speed rushers in the 2nd. You can have the guy that’s lazy and can’t handle speed rushers in the 1st.

He is not lazy on the field, and he can handle speed rushers. Don’t buy into that Robert Ayers hype. I have watched the Tenn tape, and Ayers did beat him on about 3-4 plays badly, but its not as bad as Mayock makes it seem.

Yeah, so okay it was a bad idea for Smith to run shirtless but I’d be willing to bet the picture would be similar with most if not all currrent NFL OL personnel. Jeebus, we’re talking grinders and big eaters here, not Mr. Universe. Ever seen Willie Anderson’s torso in profile? Also, I’d take the guy with decent strength and long arms over a stubby-armed bench-pressing prodigy anyday because, to paraphrase Winston Churchill, Andre can improve that strength but stubby can’t grow longer arms.

by IgnatiusJReilly on Mar 24, 2009 6:05 PM EDT reply actions

but will he

the point isn’t so much that his body is hideous. It’s that he’s that fat at a time when his future largely rests on how in shape he is. If he’s not willing to get into better shape when it’s going to effect his draft position, so therefore his money. Why would a team think he’d commit himself to improving his body once he’s gotten paid?

Why does it have to boil down to Andre Smith or a guy with stubby arms. How about a guy with good reach and a non-p*ss poor physique? Trust me, no one would have made it an issue if most offensive lineman in the NFL looked like that, as you suggest.

I’m crossing my fingers for a guy who didn’t quit the combine or embarrass himself with millions on the line. As a Bengals fan, am I shooting too high? Perhaps.

It was the right pick to make given how the mock went

Here is my second round draft board.

1.) Alex Mack
2.) Connor Barwin
3.) Michael Johnson
4.) Donald Brown
5.) Eric Wood
6.) Paul Kruger
7.) LeSean McCoy

Yup, no Max Unger, Yup, Eric Wood 5th.

Look here is the thing. This draft is filled with depth with Good centers. Alex Mack to me is the only Great Center. Max Unger to me is a guard in the NFL.

Eric Wood is a good pick, but watch the tape, Johnathan Luigs, Antoine Caldwell and A.Q. Shipley are on the exact same level as Wood in almost everything, and they are projected in rounds 3 or 4.

If Connor Barwin is there in the second, you must select him. He is a rush DE, he can play SAM LB (which we need pretty badly) and he can play TE. He is our Mike Vrabel. Look at the depth of Center compared to LB. LB’s this year are not that good. The drop off is pretty tremendous after Aaron Curry. Select Barwin if he is there, because he is a very good player, good character, a leader, and he does everything right.

Like I said before, Center is so stacked this year, selecting a A.Q. Shipley/Antoine Caldwell/Johnathan Luigs in the 3rd round will give you the exact same production as an Eric Wood.

by "Mr. NC-17" on Mar 24, 2009 10:59 PM EDT up reply actions

Center can wait until the 3rd round this year… unless Mack is there of course. Grab a top LB, DE, CB, or RB… whoever falls to us.

by kirby28 on Mar 25, 2009 8:25 AM EDT up reply actions

Let's wait and see

Let’s wait and see who is available after the first round is over. We could really use a center. That has been my stance for awhile but I have a feeling they might fall back like the receivers did last year. If Mack is there, take him. If not, lets hold the center pick until round 3.

by smoormandiddy on Mar 25, 2009 8:24 AM EDT reply actions

my 2nd round board

1. Max Unger
2. Alex Mack
3. Clint Sintim
4. Donald Brown
5. LeSean McCoy
5. Alphonso Smith
6. Robert Ayers
8. Larry English
9. Paul Kruger
10. Eric Wood

i agree with the above post about waiting for a Center until the 3rd round if Unger and Mack are gone. If they are… then lets take one of the 2 RBs that can come in and start day one for us, the rest of the guys in this draft will be complimentary this first season. Chances is they are gone as well. So lets go with the best LB or DE
