From Scourge to Forgotten. Is Chris Perry Moving Down in the World?

I was always told as a kid, Little Timzilla, the day the coaches stop doggy you is the day they don’t care anymore. The same’s true for Chris Perry, I guess.

Star-divide

Once the scourge here and at other blogs (and in the hearts and minds of Bengals fans, too), today he’s the never-mentioned guy (like Barney Frank and Chris Dodd’s roles in the economic crash). When the 2009 Bengals running game is discussed, Perry is seldom if ever mentioned. I’m probably in a camp of one on this, but it was quite notable how quickly Lewis threw the bad-luck Perry under the bus.

Yup, to hear Lewis tell it, it was all Perry’s fault:

“Hey media, we can’t run the ball, and it’s all his fault. He can’t hold onto the ball. His fault. The fact we were too stupid to properly plan for Rudi’s obviously deteriorating skills (even though most fans saw it for the past 2 years), we’re blaming Perry. It’s all his fault.”

Okay, Lewis didn’t say it in those exact words ... but hey, not only can I read, I can read between the lines. Yeah, sure, it was all Perry’s fault.

Look, it was obvious 5 minutes in the last year’s preseason opener that the Bengals offense was Tim Geithnerin jock straps and helmets—they were in way over their heads. So, what did opposing D’s do? Put 8 and 9 in the box and got to the RB (Perry) like water between fingers, or steamrollers over wet asphalt. It was ugly. Remember?

Think about it. Perry hadn’t played in what was essentially 2 years? Didn’t matter ... “hey kid, we know you haven’t played in years, but we just cut our starting RB, and you’re in there! ... so go strap ‘em up! But oh, we forgot to tell you, we can’t block ... we can’t throw ... we can’t coach ... we can’t game plan ... and we can’t draft ... frankly we just weren’t smart enough to plan for dumping Rudi, and we’re a fake NFL team this year. But hey, you go out there and knock ‘em dead ... make us all look good, kid.”

That’s like you and I being in a coma for 18 months, waking up in a fog and having the CEO say, “Welcome back, Bob. Hey, we’re making a big presentation to Spacely Sprockets in 5 mins, so get over to Men’s Warehouse, suit up ... you’re heading up the presentation!””

Yeah, okay, granted .... he had 5 fumbles last year ... but that was 3 more holes that the OL actually opened for him.

Look, running backs that can actually catch the ball are a premium in the League. I don’t just mean those ‘lil swing pass, baby lob ups. I mean guys that can run routes and catch Palmer bullets.  I don’t know where Perry’s head is these days—is he focused and determined. Or whiney and pitiful. More importantly, I don’t know where his feet and ankles are.

Having taken a stance of defending Perry, here’s the deal-breaker—Perry’s health. If he has not (or can never) regain the physical skills of ’05, that’s an entirely different story. But he’s still young, and if he can be 90-95%, or better yet, 110%, of the Chris Perry we had in ’05, I say suit, kid.

Personally, I’d like one more Perry encore (but a completely healthy Perry, with a completely healthy Bengals offense).

healthy or not

Healthy or not, Chris is not able to hold onto the ball because of his running style. I hope we cut him

Prior to last year ...

Perry had only fumbled twice during his pro career, and I don’t recall it being a problem at UM. If Lewis and Brat get another year, so should Perry. But if he doesn’t show well this year, then I’m with you … send him on.

That's because he had barely played in his pro career

The guy obviously has fumble-itis

Men write many fine and plausible arguments in support of monarchy, but the fact remains that where every man in a state has a vote, brutal laws are impossible.

The whole ...

franchise fumbled last year.

You can’t really count his performance in college as being indicative of having a fumbling problem or not. College and pro are two vastly different planes.

Either way, he was handed the reigns to his future last year. You can chalk a lot of the problems up to the O-line, but he was completely abysmal in his own right. I was embarrassed as a Bengals fan when I’d discuss games with my friends and I could pull out the fact that our backup QB was consistently our leading rusher. I mean really, Perry is about as fragile as china and seemed to have coated his hands with oil last year, but not lathering the rest of his body down to slip past defenders.

It isn’t really fair to place the blame completely on Perry, because it wasn’t all his fault. But he didn’t help his case either with horrible ball control and lackluster performance. I think he was kind of thrown under the bus last year, but he was given a chance. I assume the team will be cutting ties with Perry in the very near future.

Fumblers usually have a ...

… history of fumbling, and Perry doesn’t have that history. So cutting him for fumbling last year doesn’t make sense. Yeah, he was given the reigns to probably the worst NFL offensive line (and offense) in the last 25 years. Gee, thanks for those reigns, Mr. Lewis. How many holes do you recall seeing opened for Perry? I just have visions of him being gang-tackled before getting the handoffs.

College tendency doesn't...

…equal pro tendency. If that was true, then everyone that was picked during the 1st round would essentially be a promised Pro Bowl player and potential Hall of Fame player. How many 1st round picks completely bomb out because they can’t cut it at a pro level? Pretty sure there are quite a few of them. College doesn’t equal pro.

The O-line was completely horrid last season, but so was Perry. Place as much of the blame as you want on the line, he was still completely lackluster. He’s had several injuries, and failed to prove anything last season besides the fact he managed to avoid injuries, which I doubt he would have done if he started the rest of the season. I see no argument for keeping him besides the apparent, “The O-line was atrocious and he didn’t have a real chance.” They have a back they have confidence in, who at least showed some production in Benson, and will most likely draft a back for the immediate future.

I don’t see any room in the Bengals future for Perry, no matter what way you paint it.

"I don’t see any room in the Bengals future for Perry, no matter what way you paint it."

I don’t either. When given the opp. last year to take the ball and run away with it, he didn’t do well (boy THAT is an understatement). He fumbled, lost three in the first five games. His yards per carry were average, at best, and I’m being nice there.

In truth, if you paint a picture, Perry is easily replaceable.

Tim, I see what you’re saying about fumbling. But his string of fumbles hurt him bad. The perception is there, and I’m sure the coaches aren’t too confident giving him the ball anymore with any consistency. IF Perry is brought back, and IF Perry completely turns it around, then it will because he made it happen. He has to make this happen, and he’s competing from behind. Otherwise, he’s behind the eight-ball and I believe, on the chopping block. Drafting a running back makes that a certainty. My two cents.

Because of the totally impossible situation ...

… the team put Perry in last year, I say give him a mulligan for ‘08. It appears he’s finally healhty, at least to the naked eye. I know it’s hard for people to remember the spark he gave that ‘05 team, seems like forever ago. And I know it’s easy to dump on him ,,, but c’mon, what RB could have been successful here in the first half of ’08. No body. And the fumbling thing can be corrected.

If he’s healthy, and the Bengals are a legit Offense this year, I say let’s see what he can do. But I suspect he’ll be cut if Lewis gets the RB he wants in the Draft.

If anything he should be kept as a 3rd down back… He has the best hands on the team.

you do have a point

i would like to have him as a 3rd down compared to have 3D

what?

“it was quite notable how quickly Lewis threw the bad-luck Perry under the bus.”

In four years Chris Perry had one season in which he looked fairly decent, every other year he did nothing at all. How long do you have to wait for a guy? Lewis quickly threw him under the bus? That’s insane.
