What has to happen for Curry to fall to the Bengals

While I agree that Oline is the most pressing need, I have made it no secret that I think Curry is a strong enough D-playmaker that if he falls to 6th the Bengals MUST take him. SAM LB is still a long term need on this team and pairing the playmaking abilities of Curry with the solid technique of Rivers would make the LB positon a strength of the team for the first time in the Marvin Lewis era.

Unfortunately Curry is going 3 in almost every mock and on SportsCenter this morning it was reported that while the Lions were in contract talks with Matthew Stafford, the Lions frontoffice has agreed on a plan to draft Curry #1 overall if they don't reach an agreement with Stafford by draft day. Probably just a strategic leak to scare the Stafford camp......but you never know.

Anyways, I have come up with only 1 reasonably possible scenario in which the Bengals can land Curry at #6

1. Lions - Matthew Stafford (very likley)

2. Rams - Jason Smith (also very likley)

3. KC - Eugene Monroe (this is obviously the key pick, it has been pointed out that while Curry is a natural SAM 4-3 LB  KC runs the 3-4 which might be a concern. They also are in the market for an OT)

4. Seattle (or SF) - Mark Sanchez (this also isn't very likely as SEA would gladly take Curry if he fell to 4 but they do like Sanchez. If SF trades for the pick we might be in luck.

5. Cleveland - Michael Crabtree (they could trade Edwards for picks and take Crabtree here)

6. Bengals - AARON CURRY

I give this scenario about a 10% chance, in any other situation we take A. Smith or one of the top 2 OT's if they happen to fall.

I think Curry would be great but he is too small to play SAM LB. I read a report saying that a team with a 4-3 defense said he would be used as a MIKE LB if chosen by them in the draft. Could that be Cincy? Possibly. We certainly need a SAM more than a MIKE but he would still be a great pick for the future.

RE:

I’m not sure. Listening to most of the talking heads, you get the feeling that there’s a overwhelming majority that Curry is the best player in the NFL draft.

Curry was always the SAM in Wake’s 4-3. While Wake listed him as 6’3 the combine measured him as 6’2 254 which is still bigger than our current starting SAM Jeanty who is listed at 6’ 2’ 245. I could see him developing into a good MLB, which is part of his versatility, but I think he is a natural SAM.

I hope that’s an eery coincidence and not a sign from the football gods about how our next saviour linebacker will turn out…

I don't think you could find two more different people than Curry and Ahmad

Ahmad made it All American his sophmore year then proceeded to continually get in trouble and get kicked off football teams.

Curry was a late bloomer who was only recruited to 1 power conferee school and had worked for everything he has gotten. He would be a nice character guy in our locker room.

Ray Lewis?

Didn’t everyone thing he was too small when the Ravens landes him in 96. Wouldn’t it be nice to have a couple mean linebackers to lead the defense? Maybe get some Palmer Protecton with our later picks?

Thanks

I didn’t realize he was bigger than Jeanty and Brooks. That only makes me more hopefull he falls to us at 6. If so we can use the 2nd pick for a RT and 3rd for a C.

I completley agree

while getting a first round OT would be great you can still find very quality RT in the second and third rounds. If we didn’t have Anthony Collins I might say we HAD to take a LT but b/c he played so well towards the end of the year we have some options at #6

by CincyMike56 on Apr 23, 2009 10:41 PM EDT up reply actions

Agreed. Considering Collins was a 4th rounder, saying you have to take an OT in the first round to get a good LT (or even RT) is nuts. Whoever thinks that needs to lay off sniffing Mel Kiper’s hairspray.

Do we need to draft OL? Absolutely. Probably at least three between C/G/T, preferably four. But they don’t have to be in round 1, and I would just flat out love to see Curry in stripes. We have a D that got progressively better over last season even as the offense got worse and worse (at least until they took the handcuffs off Ced against teams that made the Lions look talented… Ryan “double-clutch and then play RB” Fitzpatrick shouldn’t play football in the backyard much less the NFL.). Give them a couple of big-time playmakers like Curry and maybe one more DE/CB and they could really start kicking some serious butt. Especially if the O can at least give them a tiny bit of help this time around.

Or if the talented-but-always-hurt DEs/CBs we have could get and stay healthy…

i think your asking for a little too much on that one :)

Maybe, but what’s wrong with a little wishful thinking?

Everybody gets hurt at least a little bit during the season. I’m just hoping they get only “lightly” hurt and can continue to play and produce.

espn's Clayton

Clayton just reported that KC is considering DE Tyson Jackson LSU with the third pick. The plot thickens.

Peter King has KC taking Tyson Jackson as well

In his mock for Sports Illustrated. This guy really came out of nowhere to climb the charts. King also has us taking Raji while Monroe and A. Smith are still on the board so don’t put too much stock into it.

Mel Kiper's Latest Mock

ESPN gave Mel’s lastest mock, Jackson going to KC. He has the Bengals taking ASmith. Then the Raiders take Monroe.I believe the top five were Stafford,JSmith,Jackson, Sanchez and Curry.

by redberkey on Apr 24, 2009 3:31 PM EDT reply actions

The browns taking Curry? Only if they are just trying to make sure he doesn’t end up in Cinti. If he’s not a good choice for a 3-4/4-3 mix like KC why would he be good for a pure 3-4 like Cleveland?
