Detroit Lions have Stafford in their sites, Will Curry fall to Bengals?
John Clayton of ESPN has reported that as of last night there is still no agreement between the Detroit Lions and Matthew Stafford QB Georgia but that there main focus is signing him before the draft.
They have been negotiating with Stafford, Curry, and Smith but all attention now seems to be on Stafford. Obviously, the factor is the money right now but Stafford is quoted as saying he would love to play for Detroit.
Where does this leave the Bengals? I have read countless posts that if Curry does indeed fall and is sitting there at #6 the Bengals should not hesitate and pick him.
I am not doubting Curry's freakish ability but looking back in recent years on Bengals 1st Round LB picks have not worked out or have been unluckily thwarted by nature itself.
David Pollack-Career ending Neck Injury
Odell Thurman-Out of league
Keith Rivers-Awesome athlete season ending broken jaw. I know freak hit and I hope he recovers and brings back that talent he had in the first few games but I am just saying 1st Round LB jinx.
On the flip side though Curry would be a nice fit next to Rivers but seriously do we really need to keep stockpiling defense players. The time is now to start stockpiling some protection for Carson and help the running game. Bring in a bunch of OL players to compete and push each other to turn this team around.
the CSF still thinks Andre Smith would be the BEST pick at #6 but the verdict is out on how Brown and the Bengals will surprise us all at the 2009 Draft!

I don't know about a 1st round LB jinx...
More a general 1st round bengals jinx full stop.
I think the obvious solution is to give up all our 1st day picks for the next 10 years and concentrate on players noone else wants (i.e. Dhani Jones, Chris Crocker, Chinedum Ndukwe, Anthony Collins, TJ) instead of the hyped-up college prosopects (i.e. Ki-Jana Carter, Akili Smith, Chris Perry, Justin Smith, Odell Thurman, David Pollack…you know how it goes).
I’m kidding obviously, but it is unusual how we get such consistently bad early picks and yet manage to get more than servicable starters off the street or deep in the draft.
Anyone got a theory to explain it?
I think ...
it’s because once we cut thru all the Draft-craze masturbation, there’s marginal differences between the annual concensus Top Ten players and those drafted in the first couple hours on Day 2. I don’t have the research to back this up, but I’m betting over the past 10-15 years there’s nearly as many (or maybe more) 3rd- and 4th-round successes as those coming in the 1st round. Then, throw in the ‘motivation factor’ … who’s gonna play harder, a guy with a $35 million guaranteed deal, or a guy who’s gotta strike gold on his second contract?
Jinx??
Odell Thurman wasnt a first round draft pick.
Keith Rivers broke his jaw, hardly something that will effect his ability to run or tackle. Its way too early to pass judgement on him.
Pollack was a shame, and its terrible that he was injured like that. However he was an end coming out of college, and may have played some end in the pros, so i dont think he counts.
Brian Simmons was a leader and the most reliable defender we had for 8 years.
Takeo Spikes was a fine player and eventual pro bowler (though, not for the bengals)
Im not seeing how the bengals have a first round linebacker jinx.
