NFL Draft: Open Thread (Saturday)
Here we open the site to you. A no-holds barred open thread.
While we wait for the Bengals selection at approximately 5 p.m., here are some things to review.
We analyzed the team's roster and what the Bengals could address in the draft.
We interviewed Mocking the Draft and Michael Abromowitz.
What if Aaron Curry is available?
Which offensive tackle would the Bengals select if all were available?
If Chad Johnson is traded, today would be the day.
How does the Matthew Stafford signing affect the Bengals?

Hello Josh,
Hey, thanks for everything you do on CincyJungle. Although we don’t always say it, I will say on behalf of all of us… thank you!! I check CincyJungle every day and read everything published here and it gives me an outlet to continue to be a real die-hard Bengals fan. Again, thanks!
You got it man
I love doing it and thrilled that I can do it for you guys. And THANK YOU for reading.

Now, down for business.
Let’s take Curry if he falls to us (I WAS a big Crabtree fan, but, changed my mind), if not, we take the best OT on the board. I think we should also trade some of our 11 picks for another late round first, if we can…
Looking forward to hanging out with some Bengals fans during the draft. Here’s hoping we take an OT!
Me too!
And I’m glad the draft day is here.

Anyone notice Crabtree with Reds cap?
On ESPN, Michael Crabtree was being interviewed and he was wearing a brand new Cincinnati Reds cap. Now, I know wearing Reds cap are the in thing (and who can blame those trend setters), but that had me going “uh oh”.

I didn't notice...
But, that is interesting. I think the only way we take Crab is if we trade Chad and I don’t see that happening. Not that I don’t think we should, because I THINK WE SHOULD, but, don’t think we will.
I don't know.
Perhaps it’s our most popular ambassador Nick Lachey. :-)

Curry
I love the kid, i mean who takes a developmentally challenged kid to the draft? I’ve never seen that by a top pick and it seems like Curry exudes class and maturity. But……the Bengals just selected a top 10 LB last season and an OT must, must, must be drafted with the #6 pick.
Unless the Big Three are gone.

back to back
we took Hall and Joseph back to back at CB, so we could do it at LB

On of the biggest positives about Curry is his character.

My opinion...
I thinks Curry’s value to OUR team is increased with the possibility of pairing him with Rivers. It would be pretty potent, especially with the addition of Tank on the line. He could be the one critical piece that finally gives us a REAL run defense to compete with Pitt and Balt.
I agree.
Adam Morgan mirrors my opinion. Curry is the only selection, IMHO, in which I won’t mind if we pass on an offensive tackle.

Raji to Cleveland
Been seeing that a lot this morning in respective mock drafts.
Does it make sense? The Browns run a 3-4 and Shaun Rogers is a pretty good tackle.

OK... so if Curry is gone, but Eugene Monroe and Anrdre Smith are on the board...
which do we take?? I see some mocks taking Andre, even with Monroe there because he could be RT or LT??
RE:
I think that the Bengals are much higher on Andre Smith than Monroe. Supposedly Smith has more upside, better technique and less questions in the way of durability.

They just introduced Crabtree at the draft...
I live in Lubbock, Home of Texas Tech. Saw all his games. Love the guy, he is going to be a star.
Read through the Texas Tex blog on SB Nation.
And people were surprised by the “diva” characterization he was being given in the past week or so.

No update on Chad Johnson
We have some guys that were given press creds. at radio city, and there’s absolutely NO buzz about Johnson. In fact, Mort keeps saying roboticly that he’s not getting traded. ESPN’s Michael Smith said the same thing, which got me a little excited, because a lot of what he says, the opposite turns out.

Crabtree freaking?
Per PFT
As the draft approaches, we’re hearing that Michael Crabtree is getting nervous.
So nervous that some think his camp is floating a phony rumor that the Dolphins want to trade up to get Crabtree.
The thinking is that, if Darrius Heyward-Bey or some other receiver is picked before Crabtree, the Texas Tech receiver will blow a gasket.

I think trading him to ensure we get the best center in the draft is worth giving up our second round pick. Addition by subtraction.

Or wait for a C?
Stoked with the Smith pick. RT is a huge need. Also, shame Crabtree, teaches you for wearing pink…
wait for a C
i think that is the biggest need on the ballclub, by far. if one of the big three centers are available its a no-brainer.

Yea, they very well could look at guard midway through Sunday

by cinbengal_85@yahoo.com on Apr 25, 2009 5:26 PM EDT reply actions
Possibly.
They could have identified DE, however, from what they’ve said in the past month or so, they are banking on whom they have now, plus Mike Zimmer’s promise of having a more aggressive blitz scheme for 2009. However, upgrades to Fanene and Rucker? Yea, wouldn’t have a problem with that.

by cinbengal_85@yahoo.com on Apr 25, 2009 5:30 PM EDT up reply actions
RE:
Actually, I think the money argument was thrown out of the window once we selected Smith. I don’t think we can make an argument against DE anymore simply about cost.
The question is this. Since Geathers and Odom are primarily pass rushers at end (even though they didn’t produce) and since both players were injured mostly through 2008, does it makes since to draft a defensive end simply to pass rush.
Personally, I think the odds are much higher that the Bengals draft a defensive end to transform him to an OLB who rushes the passer on third down.

Yo Peeps....
You guys have been active!!!!
Pretty good first pick for us huh?
We going for Wood in second round?
Pittsburgh seems like someone likely to draft the next center
So if we can dodge another team surprising us by drafting a center, we could get the third one available.

Dick Lebeau to Laurinitis “If you are still there at 32, we’re going to take you”
That's fantastic news. I've always liked you mehl.

You know, come to think of it
Why would Pittsburgh draft another LB. Don’t they have a ton?

To introduce myself...
I’ve been reading CincyJungle for a while, and I’ve just been too lazy to sign up. I love your commitment to the blog and team… and I usually actually agree with you!
Welcome aboard and thanks for reading.
Do you like the Andre Smith selection?

I like the pick..
Although I watched a lot of games with Monroe playing this year, since I’m in virginia……and he is really, really solid. But I am not sure about his knees….has had some problems. You gotta trust the coaches on offensive lineman I think.
Probably could
But I doubt they will. They’re not that creative and they don’t trade up. Sadly. We need one of those centers.

just wait 10 years until Brown is as old as Davis is now, and he’s really senile. Thats when it gets ugly
To be honest...
I was a little disappointed. I had resigned myself to Smith when the other 2 tackles were off the board. I hope (does this make me a bad person?) that Smith’s knees last longer than Monroe’s to justify the pick. I also hope that he ends up being a fit at LT.
11 picks left before we select again.
I’m really concerned about getting a center.
Can ya tell?

Here's hoping.
All I can get from draft gurus is that Pittsburgh seems like the most likely team that drafts a center before the Bengals select again.

I'm not sure we can criticize the Smith pick
We took the need most of us agreed upon which in light of past drafts is an improvement :)
Could Beanie Wells fall as far as 38?
i.e. Corey Dillon

Can't see him at 38
But trade Johnson to the Giants for their first and give them a fourth rounder – and you could have Wells
Trade Johnson for a sixth round pick.
And I’ll be happy. :)

by IgnatiusJReilly on Apr 25, 2009 7:05 PM EDT up reply actions
Caldwell in the 2nd?
Is that too much a reach?
Can they risk waiting?
If three centers are taking in the first round, then several teams that need centers could be reaching before they want.

Now it gets interesting
The teams that are active are moving to get their picks, the teams that stay in one position risk missing out.
That being said there’s going to be some big names at 38.
Agreed abc2
Bobbie moving to center has to start becoming a possibility
OT Ebon Britton ARIZ?

Hummm...
One, Williams has limited, very limited experience at center. We weaken the RG spot too.
Two, having two rookies on the right side of the line is a risk.
I’m not totally against it, but it could be difficult.
