NFL Draft: Open Thread (Saturday)

Here we open the site to you. A no-holds barred open thread.

While we wait for the Bengals selection at approximately 5 p.m., here are some things to review.

We analyzed the team's roster and what the Bengals could address in the draft.
We interviewed Mocking the Draft and Michael Abromowitz.
What if Aaron Curry is available?
Which offensive tackle would the Bengals select if all were available?
If Chad Johnson is traded, today would be the day.
How does the Matthew Stafford signing affect the Bengals?

Hello Josh,

Hey, thanks for everything you do on CincyJungle. Although we don’t always say it, I will say on behalf of all of us… thank you!! I check CincyJungle every day and read everything published here and it gives me an outlet to continue to be a real die-hard Bengals fan. Again, thanks!

Now, down for business.

Let’s take Curry if he falls to us (I WAS a big Crabtree fan, but, changed my mind), if not, we take the best OT on the board. I think we should also trade some of our 11 picks for another late round first, if we can…

by txbengalfan on Apr 25, 2009 3:16 PM EDT reply actions

I agree with taking Curry if he drops to us but I don’t think he’ll be there. If he’s not there, it’s imperative that we take an OT.

by Adam Morgan on Apr 25, 2009 3:19 PM EDT up reply actions

Looking forward to hanging out with some Bengals fans during the draft. Here’s hoping we take an OT!

Anyone notice Crabtree with Reds cap?

On ESPN, Michael Crabtree was being interviewed and he was wearing a brand new Cincinnati Reds cap. Now, I know wearing Reds cap are the in thing (and who can blame those trend setters), but that had me going “uh oh”.

I didn't notice...

But, that is interesting. I think the only way we take Crab is if we trade Chad and I don’t see that happening. Not that I don’t think we should, because I THINK WE SHOULD, but, don’t think we will.

Curry

I love the kid, i mean who takes a developmentally challenged kid to the draft? I’ve never seen that by a top pick and it seems like Curry exudes class and maturity. But……the Bengals just selected a top 10 LB last season and an OT must, must, must be drafted with the #6 pick.

Unless the Big Three are gone.

My opinion...

I thinks Curry’s value to OUR team is increased with the possibility of pairing him with Rivers. It would be pretty potent, especially with the addition of Tank on the line. He could be the one critical piece that finally gives us a REAL run defense to compete with Pitt and Balt.

by txbengalfan on Apr 25, 2009 3:32 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree.

Adam Morgan mirrors my opinion. Curry is the only selection, IMHO, in which I won’t mind if we pass on an offensive tackle.

Been seeing that a lot this morning in respective mock drafts.

Does it make sense? The Browns run a 3-4 and Shaun Rogers is a pretty good tackle.

No update on Chad Johnson

We have some guys that were given press creds. at radio city, and there’s absolutely NO buzz about Johnson. In fact, Mort keeps saying roboticly that he’s not getting traded. ESPN’s Michael Smith said the same thing, which got me a little excited, because a lot of what he says, the opposite turns out.

Crabtree freaking?

Per PFT

As the draft approaches, we’re hearing that Michael Crabtree is getting nervous.

So nervous that some think his camp is floating a phony rumor that the Dolphins want to trade up to get Crabtree.

The thinking is that, if Darrius Heyward-Bey or some other receiver is picked before Crabtree, the Texas Tech receiver will blow a gasket.

Possibly.

They could have identified DE, however, from what they’ve said in the past month or so, they are banking on whom they have now, plus Mike Zimmer’s promise of having a more aggressive blitz scheme for 2009. However, upgrades to Fanene and Rucker? Yea, wouldn’t have a problem with that.

by cinbengal_85@yahoo.com on Apr 25, 2009 5:30 PM EDT up reply actions

RE:

Actually, I think the money argument was thrown out of the window once we selected Smith. I don’t think we can make an argument against DE anymore simply about cost.

The question is this. Since Geathers and Odom are primarily pass rushers at end (even though they didn’t produce) and since both players were injured mostly through 2008, does it makes since to draft a defensive end simply to pass rush.

Personally, I think the odds are much higher that the Bengals draft a defensive end to transform him to an OLB who rushes the passer on third down.

DE from Cincy

He impressed the hell out of everyone at the combine, and many would project him at OLB, but mostly as a pass rusher. A lot of people suggest he would fit best in a 3-4 scheme and not a 4-3.

I'm still disgusted that the Bengals did not use their surfeit of picks to actually pick up a center...

God I hate Mike Brown.

If Unger is gone...

I think we go with Barwin…..and have him play both ways….offense and defense….lol

What about Ziggy Hood?

I like him just for his name…….

by Sloppygolf on Apr 25, 2009 7:27 PM EDT reply actions

so long as he’s not a big giant circle with legs.

I don’t like the idea of Maulauga and Polamalu roaming the same defense.

Cleveleand trades down and down and down to get a center? did they realy need one or is it a case of knowing that Cincy and Pitt were in that market?

Cleveland just sucks.

That’s the only logical and intellectual reason I can come up with.

Thats the only one i could come up with either. I’m good with Caldwell but, round 2 is higher than I was thinking.

I think Unger is ours for the taking

All that is needed is a coaching staff as smart as us!

by mskiles314 on Apr 25, 2009 7:37 PM EDT reply actions

I actually like this

If the bama C is there in the 3rd this is a good pick

by CincyMike56 on Apr 25, 2009 8:00 PM EDT reply actions

I’m on the Caldwell bandwagon too.

by BamaBengal on Apr 25, 2009 8:08 PM EDT up reply actions

im in love with the pick!

now lets get Caldwell and Jennings in the 3rd

by Joe Goodberry on Apr 25, 2009 8:29 PM EDT reply actions

Hoping for Caldwell in the 3rd too

It might even help with Smith and Caldwell learning the O together
