Open Thread: NFL Draft - Second Round

The first round is over and things didn't go as expected for the Bengals. After the Bengals selected Andre Smith, they watched as two of the top-three rated centers went off the board in the first round. Now the Bengals have to pray that Max Unger sticks around, reach for another center if Unger is off the board or address another position like running back, linebacker, another offensive line spot, defensive end or in the secondary.

In my opinion

The issue of reach went out the window with two centers going in the first round. Not many people expected that.

Michael Crabtree quotes
On the City of S.F. — “It has great weather. I can’t wait to play
football in that weather”

On the QB situation — “I have no idea. As soon as I get there I am
looking forward to working hard with all these guys and try to make each
of them better.”

On if he feels he was the best WR in the Draft — "I always feel like I
am the best. I work to be the best. I have some big shoes to fill when
I go to the 49ers with Jerry Rice. Im looking forward to that too.

Trust your board

I think the Bengals are happy with giving the two at centre now a shot. Either that or they’re considering trading back up but this is a nice pick, gives the D more identity and if I were Heinz Ward I’d think twice about going across the middle this season.

So the first day.

What do you guys say?

I think we addressed two needs, and kind of stole Rey based on projections. I’ll give the Bengals kudos, even though there seemed like plenty of players in which they could have drafted. The key to this year’s draft, obviously, will be what happens on Sunday.

But what do you guys think of Saturday’s draft?

Blogger at CincyJungle.com -- SB Nation Cincinnati Bengals blog.

by Josh Kirkendall on Apr 25, 2009 8:21 PM EDT reply actions

Value wise

Outstanding. Two guys who at one time were top ten prospects at 6 and 38.

by IgnatiusJReilly on Apr 25, 2009 8:23 PM EDT up reply actions

I like it

No reaches. Guys we’ve all heard of and are well-scouted. Guys that played in NFL-ready divisions against NFL caliber opposition. Hard nosed players for a tough division. Andre Smith was going to be a #1 overall once.

I would absolutely love to see a trade to get back into the 2nd round and secure a center, but Marvin has reiterated his faith in Stantucci (for some reason). Maybe Gutcheck still comes back. Who knows!

I can’t complain though. And we get the added bonus of all of our projects from last year playing this year… so it’s kind of like we had 4-5 first round picks! (Rey, Smith, Collins, Sims, Simpson… and I guess we get that Palmer guy and Rivers fellow back from injury).

by jsl413 on Apr 25, 2009 8:26 PM EDT up reply actions

I’d put it another way: the Bengals need to lose some of those 11 picks somewhere, maybe better to do it today rather than tomorrow. If Unger’s not on their board, what about McCoy?

Tasty picks by the Eagles considering their trade with Buffalo as well.

At the end of last years draft, ESPN put out a Mock for this years draft, and I believe that they had the Bengals taking Maulauga with a top 5 pick in the first round

not bad

add him to a full season with Rivers, the addition of Tank Johnson, Peko, Geathers, Odom, Sims, Ndukwe and Crocker.

id say CB depth is a concern, still.

C, RB and TE tomorrow, no?

Crrrrrrrrap!

cnnsi.com feedback, courtesy or Arash Marzaki:

If teams simply drafted on talent alone, Rey Maualuga would have gone in the first round. He probably would have been the first of the celebrated USC linebacker trio to get selected. As it was, not only was he the last to be selected, he also fell all the way to the second round before Cincinnati picked him and reunited him with former Trojan teammate Keith Rivers.
The problem with Maulauga is that as much of a wrecking ball as he is on the field, he’s a bit of a space cadet. I’m not just talking off the field, where he reportedly scored a 15 on the Wonderlic and didn’t know who Vice President Joe Biden was, but on it as well. No one frustrated USC coaches more than Maualuga. He looked like he was running around with his head cut off and looking to hit anything that moved. The more tape pro coaches watched on Maualuga, the more times they probably saw him being saved by his teammates on missed assignments.
Huge hits might make for great highlights in college but if you can’t play within the confines of a structured defense in the NFL, you might end up on the other end of those highlights.

I'd like to see a C or RB with the third round pick.

I’m happy we have addressed needs, I appreciate we’re not a creative type of team to move up and down the board at will but both picks are solid and address needs. You cannot complain about that.

Now we still need a centre but finding a starting one is going to be difficult so it’s going to be pre-season to see who beats out whom for that starting role. RB to create competition, a FB, a project QB, possibly WR or a TE and another OL probably fills out offensive needs.

Cover DB and another LB and possibly a tweener and D is looking healthy.

Getting the punter we want will be nice 5-6th rounder and it’s been a solid draft.
