Open Thread: NFL Draft - Day 2

Now that the Bengals have addressed two needs at linebacker and offensive line, Cincinnati will have nine picks on Sunday to address other needs. But what are those needs?

We identified many of the team's positions as possible targets. The strongest being center and running back. Fullback, quarterback and punter aren't necessarily critical, they'll probably be addressed. There's a chance they could go after another offensive lineman, wide receiver and someone in the secondary. Here's what we've identified.

  • Center
  • Running Back
  • Fullback
  • Wide Receiver
  • Secondary (third CB, cover-safety)
  • Quarterback (third string, possible backup in 2010)
  • Offensive lineman
  • Punter

RE:

Well, I see them possibly going after a center, RB, or someone in the secondary.

If I were to project actual names.

C – Antoine Caldwell
RB – Shonn Green
Secondary – Rashad Johnson, D.J. Moore

Which means that they’ll likely not select any of them. :-)

Yea, saw that Clayton piece late last night.

Actually cracked me up. He got the name wrong, but it almost seemed like Clayton disapproved that the Bengals selected an offensive lineman rather than a skill player.

"Denver rookie head coach Josh McDaniels doesn't have a grasp on how to build a team. "

Clayton rips into McDaniels. Of course he’s a rookie coach and rebuilding a team isn’t something you learn in Building Teams 101. Just like Lewis, McDaniels is learning on the fly.

No doubt.

I’m still pumped. If I were to give the Bengals a grade for Saturday, then I’m giving them a solid “A”. Not really sure how they could have done much better without people arguing their favorite players that they wished they would have selected.

Andre Smith on the field is one of the best. Rey M. was identified by many scouting services and NFL draft sites as the best LB coming out.

Fan House
Smith has a lot of potential, so don’t see this as a huge knock on the guy. The problem is, Monroe is going to be consistently spectacular and dominant. He doesn’t have nearly as much risk as Smith, and hasn’t shown up fat and/or angry. In other words, taking Smith (the guy with the “quirky” personality but high upside) over Monroe (the seeming lock that Mike Mayock has at the top of his draft board) is the typical Bengals move.

See, this is where grading draft less than 24 hours after the selection is made is DUMB, DUMB, DUMB. How in the world can one little man with a keyboard predict so accurately the future? Hell, even scientists can’t predict global warming, but dinky writers predict how selections will work out? Writers are the most narcissistic egotistic junk heads of anyone in all of sports.

Man, I’m loaded on coffee this morning. ;-)

More on Fan House

They write for the Lions:

How often does a first-round tight end pan out? Answer: not that much. Yes, there are great tight ends that get drafted in the first round and, yes, Pettigrew is extremely talented.

Huh? So, first-round tight ends don’t pan out much, but there are great tight ends drafted in the first round and Pettigrew is really talented. Where does that make sense? If you’re going to point out that the Lions should have drafted defense, then say that. Don’t downplay the Lions TE selection — which honestly surprised me too.

I say Caldwell first.

However, I’m starting to get into the territory thinking how much of an improvement are the remaining centers over Kyle Cook and Dan Santucci. If we keep waiting, it might be pointless to draft a center. That level of talent would already be on roster.

by Josh Kirkendall on Apr 26, 2009 9:54 AM EDT up reply actions

I'm thinking along the same lines.

Caldwell is really the only guy who would be an upgrade left immediately. I was super-pissed when Wood went, he’s the one I wanted.

by Craig Conrad on Apr 26, 2009 9:56 AM EDT up reply actions

No doubt.

It took me about five minutes of a glossy look in my eyes before registering Wood had gone. Not that he wasn’t available to the Bengals, rather he left so early.

And it also appeared that the Bengals didn’t have Unger high on their board, passing him up. But also the Bengals reportedly wanted to trade out of the sixth pick to draft Rey M. later in the first round. Instead, they got him and an offensive lineman. Accidentally making it work = priceless.

Blogger at CincyJungle.com -- SB Nation Cincinnati Bengals blog.

by Josh Kirkendall on Apr 26, 2009 9:58 AM EDT up reply actions

I'm kind of glad they didn't take Unger.

He was graded to have a hard time with mountainous nose tackles. He’d have been Ghiaciuc v2.0.

by Craig Conrad on Apr 26, 2009 10:01 AM EDT up reply actions

I think the next pick is Caldwell

He’s the only center left worth having. He is a good one tho. Was my second choice all along after Wood. I’ve seen him play quite a bit here in Tuscaloosa. Not flashy but, rock steady.

by BamaBengal on Apr 26, 2009 10:01 AM EDT up reply actions

Cadwell or move onto another position pick

As much as I would love to see us draft a center, after getting a great LBer when there was quality centers available, I’d like to see a good FB come along. One that can run and pass block.

Caldwell scouting report.

From Mocking the Draft.

Antoine Caldwell
6’3, 305 pounds | Alabama | Center

Strengths: A four-year starter at Alabaspma, Caldwell is quick off the snap. He uses that immediacy to get good leverage. He maintains it by keeping his hands active. Does a nice job of dropping his hips and holding up at the point of attack. Doesn’t waste a motion while he’s snapping the ball. Plays with a lot of intelligence and made all the line calls during his career.

Weaknesses: Caldwell is purely an in-line blocker who has trouble on the move, particularly when a play breaks down. Lateral agility and quickness is greatly lacking. Size isn’t anything special and will need to get stronger in the pros. Not a finisher and won’t intimidate opponents.

Final word: Caldwell has played all along the line, but is by far at his best at center. There, he displays the ability to quickly snap the ball and get into position. He’s an intelligent lineman who will be an asset to most teams.

Asked Mocking Dan about Caldwell and how he could contribute in the AFCN
He could be serviceable. As long as Caldwell doesn’t have to move around too much, he’s a pretty good blocker. However, he’s a big dropoff from the other centers that have already gone.

Drafting a Center

The fact that we missed out on the top Center prospects, I hope we do not settle for the next best prospect available. Like we did in the second round, I hope we use the pick on the best player available, that helps us fill a need. Rey with Rivers is now something that we can get excited about… especially with the improvement the D showed last year.

by NYCwhoDEY on Apr 26, 2009 10:07 AM EDT reply actions

Can't argue that point.

However, if they keep passing on center, then there’s really no point in drafting one.

Blogger at CincyJungle.com -- SB Nation Cincinnati Bengals blog.

by Josh Kirkendall on Apr 26, 2009 10:07 AM EDT up reply actions

That is my point.

Does drafting Caldwell at this spot really promise anything? Since he is considered such a drop off from the other Centers… maybe we wait til the 4th round and pick him. Otherwise, no need to reach for him if he doesn’t improve the position over what we have. Would he be a big difference over our Center last season?

by NYCwhoDEY on Apr 26, 2009 10:10 AM EDT up reply actions

We're on the same page.

Plus you have to account by the talking points we’ve heard from Marvin about Santucci and Cook. He likes them both and Santucci went down before the season started, so we really don’t know what he’s all about just yet. That could be the center lineup in 2009.

Honestly.

I don’t know much about Johnson, and can’t remember if I saw him or not. I like what I heard about him though and what I’m reading.

However, personally, I didn’t target DE as that big of a need. However, there’s a point that could be made that the other spots could be available later in the draft. Jennings could be there in the fourth, and Caldwell with the second third-round pick.

So as the Zen Master says, we’ll see.

Caldwell being gone isn't a bad thing.

I mean, we might have really wanted him and all, but like I said just a second ago, I don’t think that the Bengals have center in the “need” category like we did. So while it hurts us, the Bengals may have already decided to give the guys we have a try.

Santucci

Look at what ESPN says of Santucci in 2007.

Strengths:

Possesses adequate-to-good height and shows enough room on his fame to add 10-to-15 more pounds. He shows good awareness in pass pro, especially for a relatively inexperienced lineman. He does a good job working on double teams, while still keeping his head up to find stunt/blitz. He shows the upper body strength to jar defenders with initial contact. He also is strong enough to maintain good separation once locked on in pass pro. He gives a great effort as a run blocker. He is feisty and plays with a mean streak. He has made significant strides as an offensive lineman since making the transition from the defensive side of the ball in 2004.

Weakness:

Relatively inexperienced at the OG position and still has room to improve in terms of technique. He really needs work on his hand-placement in pass-pro. He gets his feet crossed and fails to sustain because of his poor hand-placement too often. He has good size potential, but he must continue to add bulk to his frame. He lacks an ideal base and will struggle to anchor versus more powerful bull rushers, especially when playing too high. Leaves his feet too often and must learn to play with better balance. Struggles to consistently reach his assignment on the second-level and winds up lunging or diving at LB’s too often. He needs to learn to play with better leverage. Comes out of his standce too high at times and will struggle to shuffle laterally when he does.

Overall:

Santucci arrived at Notre Dame in 2002 as a defensive end and did not receive any playing time. In 2003, he appeared in all 12 games, mostly on special teams, but saw action as a backup defensive tackle in one game. Santucci was moved to the offensive line during 2004 spring practice, played in 11 games that season, and started the season finale against Oregon State in the Insight Bowl. Santucci then took over as a starter at guard for 11 of the Fighting Irish’s 12 games in 2005. Santucci started all 13 games at left guard as a senior in 2006.

Santucci must continue to add bulk and improve his lower body strength. However, he continues to improve with more game-experience as an offensive lineman and he possesses enough size-potential, power and mobility to eventually contribute in the NFL. Santucci could contribute as a versatile reserve at guard and center in the NFL. He grades out as a mid-Day 2 pick in the 2007 class.

by swebbIL on Apr 26, 2009 11:10 AM EDT reply actions

More on Jonathan Luigs - Center from Ark.

Strength/Toughness

Gets adequate hand placement and has adequate upper body strength but doesn’t always extend arms once locked onto the defender’s frame. While flashes a mean streak, doesn’t always finish blocks. Doesn’t appear to have great lower body strength and legs can go dead on contact.

Agility

Moves well laterally and can hook defenders lined up over outside shoulder. Quick, shows adequate though not great body control in space and can adjust to the moving target in space but lacks elite foot speed and has some problems sustaining downfield blocks.

Awareness

Displays above-average football intelligence and one of the most efficient offensive linemen in class. Shows above-average instincts in pass protection.

Pass Protection

Keeps head on a swivel and does a good job of picking up stunts and blitzes. Stays active and shows above average mirror-and-slide skills. Has problems holding ground working against bull rushers and can get pushed back into the quarterback’s lap if doesn’t sink hips enough.

Run Blocking

Takes adequate angles to downfield blocks and flashes the ability to cover up linebackers. Rarely takes false steps and has the quick first step to beat defenders to the point of contact but far more effective when left uncovered than is working against two-gap nose tackles. Doesn’t get great push and won’t be able to drive nose tackles off the ball until/unless gets stronger in his lower body. Leans into bigger defenders and slides off too many blocks as a result.

ANDRE SMITH AND REY-REY?

ARE YOU KIDDING ME? BOTH

MAKE BENGALS BIG WINNER

The Cincinnati Bengals hit a home run on Day 1 of the draft, addressing both sides of the ball with impact players.

The selection of Alabama OT Andre Smith (No. 6) and Southern Cal MLB Rey Maualuga (No. 38) represent the Bengals’ present and future at RT and MLB, respectively.

In Smith, the Bengals get the massive offensive tackle needed to protect QB Carson Palmer and open holes for TB Cedric Benson.

Then the club beefed up its 12th-ranked defense with Maualuga, who will be groomed as Dhani Jones’ replacement.

His performance on the field is crrrrrrrap. His attitude is crrrrrrrrap. Ditch him, or make him cover punts.

Wow...

Can’t believe Rashad Johnson is still there. Bet that’s the pick at 98.

by Craig Conrad on Apr 26, 2009 11:48 AM EDT reply actions

Could be.

Then Rashad Jennings in the fourth. Only seven picks to wait in-between.

True.

But none of them are Chad Johnson either.

That's what I mean.

With no Crabtree, Harvin or company left, gotta keep Chad.

RE:

I just don’t trust him. If he wants out, and he’s “crying” to Houshmandzadeh, what makes us think that he’s going to go all out? What’s his motivation to play hard and perform like he has in the past?

That should be the concern.

If he's going to rebuild his value in the FA market...

he has to perform. Mike Brown’s got him by the short and curlies. If he does not perform and he is benched, then no big contract for him when he leaves the Bengals.

No doubt.

But is it worth sitting idly by hoping that he comes around? The player should never dictate to the team, and he’s been doing that dating back a year now.

Chad is concerned about money and winning,

both of which require him to perform. It’s all about incentives with him and he’s got th incentive to perform this year.

Don't know.

Scouts Inc on Robinson

Pass blocking

A natural knee bender. Has long arms and quick hands. Rarely loses a battle once he locks on. Can sink his hips and anchor versus bull rush. Not as quick with first step in pass pro set as he is when firing out as a run blocker. Also will overextend versus quicker DT’s at times, which leads to him getting caught lunging versus some double moves.

Run blocking

Fires out of his stance, displays a quick first step when coming forward and takes very good angles as a run blocker. Needs to keep his head up more consistently and do a better job with hand placement. Has the massive build and enough strength to win nearly all phone booth matchups when he’s in position.

And no, I don’t think Whitworth is as good a guard as Steinbach.

2008: Leads the Tigers with 90 receptions for 987 yards and 10 TDs. Finishes his career as Division I record holder for receptions by a tight end (247).

He’s tougher than expected. He’s willing as a blocker and will get ‘chippy’ at times when challenged. He also is a fearless route runner and a tough to bring down after the catch.

Coats will get cut.

He has no chance at winning FB.
Kelly will stay as a FB/H-Back
However what happens with Utecht is up in the air.

There’s never a positive comment about the Bengals.
I think if Jesus Christ was on the board and the Bengals took him, Walker would find some sort of downside. He’s not giving the Bengals an “A” on the ESPN chat because there are issues about the players taken…
