First Mistake

A punter, really, cmon guys!

by Tommyboy45 on Apr 26, 2009 2:21 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Except

He’s a phenomenal punter and UC guy, so that makes everything great.

I think the Bengals are having an amazing draft thus far. The way things are going hopefully one of those RBs will slip to our first pick of the 5th round.

I meant 6th round obviously. Hit the wrong button =X

They are still there too.

What concerns me....

I know there has been talk of Rashad Jennings, but why doesn’t anybody think very highly of Jevon Ringer?

He absolutely carried the load for Michigan State.

and why haven’t Jennings or Peerman gone yet?

by dauph88 on Apr 26, 2009 2:55 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Who cares

let other people not like them. that way they can fall to us. I would like to see them take Ian Johnson personally

by Diesel2405 on Apr 26, 2009 3:35 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Ringer is gone and Peerman just left, any chance we get Jennings?

"yeah so basically you got a qb with a bum elbow and ocho who is half spanish half retarded and thats it on offense eh"

disagree...

We need a punter ( Larson is done ). This kid can kick it a mile and I don’t think this is a stretch pick. Now lets get a RB and some more depth at O-line

+1

I think it’s great they took this guy, the only worthwhile punter in the draft.

And I mean what are you really going to get in the 5th round?

by elricsi on Apr 26, 2009 4:23 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

In the 5th, 6th and 7th rounds you get one of two things… fodder for the practice squads, and instant starters that everybody (including you) mis-ranked. And the latter type are quite rare.

So if they miss out on some of those picks I’m not complaining too loudly.

As for the punter, obviously tommyboy wasn’t watching the orange bowl. This kid tried his best to salvage the situation for them, and he gave them a couple of chances to grab a safety or good field position for their offense. Too bad it didn’t work…

by FriarBob on Apr 26, 2009 6:26 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Hmm on second thought there’s another type of player you get back there… players who contribute because they fit your system so well but wouldn’t have fit others’ as well and that’s the only reason they weren’t drafted sooner…

Anyway, I’m glad they got this guy. Larson should be given a fair chance but I have zero expectation of him beating the kid out.

No Mistake

Tommy, if you are going to comment on the blog at least pretend to know about football. My friend Dave Zastodil was drafted in the 4th round years ago and has been winning the field position for the Ravens and the browns ever since. A punter is pretty important and we had the worst in the league last year. Why not go for potentially the best and greatly improve your special teams.

I know, I know, when you play Madden you never punt. But in the real game it is as necessary as it is vital. Huge pick for the best punter and the hometown boy.

Also, Josh, nice job this weekend.

not a bengals, or even really an NFL fan, but...

my lord have you guys had a nice little draft

Why thankyou

by nz on Apr 26, 2009 3:47 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Trent Morgan?

It is a fine move for our recoring secondary but, Rashad Jennings is still on the board why won’t Cincy pull the trigger? I still think this is the best Cincy draft in a while but we need Jennengs.

by cincyboy on Apr 26, 2009 4:16 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Huber was a great pick. some of these picks may not make the team. He is a lock. I would love to see Jennings picked but they may be looking at Sheets to find more of a 3rd down back.

by smoormandiddy on Apr 26, 2009 4:28 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Sheets

I like Sheets. He would be a good 3rd down back and can catch and block.

by gnunley on Apr 26, 2009 4:47 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

huber was a retarded pick when

both Tupuo and Robinson were still on the board. No excuses, period. I don’t care if he can punt the ball like Tiger Woods golfs. Rating a punter this high says you have zero confidence in your offense.

by IgnatiusJReilly on Apr 26, 2009 6:38 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Hey if you knew who to draft you'd be a GM

but you don’t so respect the fact that Cincy had a beautiful draft and shut up!

by cincyboy on Apr 26, 2009 8:22 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

over the years, Mike Brown has shown that you don’t need to know anything to be a GM, and get a bonus for doing such a great job.

That being said, things seem to have worked out pretty well this year, and Huber should give our defense 10yds extra to stop the other team. How many 5th rounders have even played more than a few games for us other the last few years.

by R.F. Mehl on Apr 26, 2009 8:38 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

What is with all this Mike Brown hating

I know he hasn’t been useful the past couple years but atleast he has helped the cause this off season. Before the off season I would rather have Dave Shula be our GM than Brown. But cut him some slack. He has done an adequate job. Give him 1 more year than we will of he is in need of a replacment.

by cincyboy on Apr 26, 2009 8:47 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

You've got to be fucking kidding me.

A Mike Brown defender? They exist? This guy has singlehandedly turned this franchise into the least successful of it’s kind- in just eighteen years at the helm. He refuses to hire a legitimate, football-savvy GM, he refuses to staff our draft/scout team and training staff to industry standard levels, he refuses to build an indoor practice facility, he pays five members of his family an average of $700K a year in salary, and, despite the atrocious win-loss record, he has given himself a bonus every year since he took over. He’s hired the wrong coaches or let them stay too long, he’s fired the good one, Wyche, he’s drafted like an illiterate cavedweller- Akili, Klingler, Perry, etc. He is the worst owner in professional sports and you have the audacity to come and defend him? Get your nose out of his ass, loser.

by IgnatiusJReilly on Apr 26, 2009 9:13 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I am going to be more mature than you

and pretend I didn’t hear your crude remarks. I siad give him another year to prove himself. Your arguing that Palmer, Zimmer and Lewis aren’t right for Cincy? Maybe you should get your nose out of your brother’s ass.

by cincyboy on Apr 26, 2009 9:23 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I wish he had a bit less mouth and a bit more brains, cincyboy, but he does have a point. Brown is the owner not the GM. As such there is no replacing him. Unfortunately.

Still, Brown has not made the Bengals in the least successful franchise in the league. Not single-handedly, at any rate. But his first few years at the helm were a disaster, and the last few haven’t been anywhere as great as we’d like.

But he’s not the worst owner in the league. Not by a long shot. Jones, Senile Al, whoever owns JAX, Snyder, and a few others all come to mind without even trying. And several others give him a strong run for the money.

by FriarBob on Apr 26, 2009 9:28 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Uh-oh, the hall monitors are here.

Yes, he is the worst owner- in the NFL and otherwise. This is based on win/loss percentage over the years in which Mike has been in charge compared to other bastions of futility out there like the Pittsburgh Pirates, the L.A. Clippers, etc. Do I believe Marvin, Mike Zimmer, and Carson aren’t right for Cincy? Not personally but it remains to be seen whether these individuals can achieve anything in the atmosphere created by the Brown family’s grip on the franchise.

How does this work? Well, recently, it starts with signing an aging Willie Anderson and a discontented Levi Jones to expensive, long-term contracts, while letting the versatile and talented young Eric Steinbach go north and not acting to replace a retiring Rich Braham at center. It continued with failing to reign in behavioral problems with Thurman, Henry, and McNeal, which culminated in making Marvin look like an idiot by resigning Henry almost immediately after Lewis had publicly stated it wouldn’t happen. This resulted in a national reputation- regardless whether earned or simply perceived, that, when coupled with the long tradition of losing, makes Cincinnati about the last place that big time free agents consider coming. Meanwhile, in the converse, Mike refuses to take a ridiculously sweet offer prior to last year’s draft for a disgruntled wideout out publicly taking stabs at teammates and the organization as a whole. This adds even more to the poison in the locker room.

As senile and just plain nuts as Al Davis is now, he’s got rings. So does Jerry Jones as outspoken and interfering as he may be. Snyder and the JAX ownership at least make the pretense of hiring GMs and staffing their personnel departments fully. Oh, yeah, and their win/loss percentage shines compared to ours.

Yes, FriarBob, the main problem is we cannot fire Mike Brown, even as he rewards himself with bonuses yearly without the corresponding performance to merit it. I could go on- anybody remember Mike turning down a trade of the whole Saints draft board in order to draft Akili Smith- but it would take more time and bandwidth than either of us have.

by IgnatiusJReilly on Apr 26, 2009 11:34 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

no, I wouldn't

there is no GM here, moron.

by IgnatiusJReilly on Apr 26, 2009 9:13 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Uh-huh

Did you steal that line from tigernut or are you just his sock puppet?

Either way, you’re both wrong. I think we would have won at least 6 games last year if we could have punted worth a flip. BAL1 likely, NY definitely, CLE1 definitely, and possibly also DAL. Two games, maybe four, lost to pathetic punting.

As for Tupuo and Robinson, when they make the pro bowl next season then your claim might have a bit more merit. Until then you’re off your rocker.

I never said I didn't like the move

Huber is an instant starter in my head.

by cincyboy on Apr 26, 2009 9:31 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

That wasn’t to you. The threading can be hard to follow sometimes… but that was to IgnoramusJRutebaga about his “Rating a punter this high says you have zero confidence in your offense” baloney…

by FriarBob on Apr 26, 2009 9:33 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

yes please shut up

There was another punter taken 2 picks later moron by the saints and last time i checked they have a pretty good offense

by Diesel2405 on Apr 26, 2009 10:05 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

True. And they too probably would have picked up a few more games if they could have punted worth a flip…

by FriarBob on Apr 26, 2009 10:19 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Great draft

would be even better if Bernard Scott was replaced with any RB that isn’t a bum

by Cedric Benson Boat Party on Apr 26, 2009 6:50 PM EDT reply actions   1 recs

I thought Cincy was looking for a 3rd string QB

I know we have more to worry about but now we’re in the post-draft stage we can can ink a QB for a small price. Graham Harrell and Chase Daniel weren’t drafted.

by cincyboy on Apr 26, 2009 8:31 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I think they should pull one in if they can, but this wasn’t a good year for QBs. And I think Jordan has more potential than most people think. I’m surprised he’s not ahead of JT O’Irrelevant…

by FriarBob on Apr 26, 2009 9:30 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I just like the idea of having a QB who has played in big games

and can heave the ball to big time WR( Harrell-Crabtree and Daniel-Maclin). Many forgeet that Harrell made the right throw at that Texas game.

by cincyboy on Apr 26, 2009 9:36 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Elated.

That’s the only word I can use to describe how I feel about this draft. To get potentially the best OT in the draft, a LB who was considered, at one point, the best LB in the draft and DE with huge athleticism and upside? Plus a true to life bruising FB, a pass catching TE, and a C with potential? AND Huber?

We had one of the best drafts, hands down. Clayton’s already on our nuts on ESPN. This definitely helps rid the bad taste left in my mouth from a dismal season last year.

by Adam Morgan on Apr 26, 2009 10:04 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Does any one think Cincy will ink a undrafted QB?

Possible candidates are Billy Malone (brought in for a visit), Harrell and Daniel.
ML wants competition for Jordan Palmer.

I hope we can keep these young pups

they all seem to be able to step right in and contribute.
