Open Thread: NFL Draft - Day 2 (part 3)
The Bengals have kept the balance through their seven picks this year; three on offense, three on defense and one on special teams. Note that all of the draft picks are on the offensive line (tackle, center and tight end) while on the defense, all three units were selected (line, linebackers, secondary). The special teams pick of Kevin Huber addressed a critical need.
Now, we're on the home-stretch. One more sixth round pick and then the seventh round.

I knew the draft was going too perfectly...
we had to pick some obvious bust before the day was done.

Personally.
Not in favor of it, but the question at this point is how much better/worse than David Jones is he? Plus his role won’t be as integrated as a normal defensive player that would play a lot of snaps. It would seem to me that he’d be more of a dime-guy. You know?

A little, I'd guess.
Really though? The rest of this draft is completely negligible for me. It’s been the best draft I could have hoped for.

Yea.

I still think...
This will be a productive draft despite the Morgan Trent selection.
Who knows? Maybe he’ll compete with David Jones for the nickel spot.
and plus, it’s still been so awesome to see the Bengals actually get players that they not only needed but were among the best on the board.
Al Afalava
I’d forgotten about him.. he could be decent. Bears just snagged him.
Merrill Johnson, the safety from Auburn, has been #2 on the SI toplist for over three rounds, right behind the TCU RB.
Trent is supposed to be good in a Cover 2, maybe hell get in gear with some coaching

believe, if you've watched him play over the past four years,
it is going to take a helluvalot of coaching.

Most of us don’t like him, for SURE! Of the 51 voters already, 37 say NO, bad selection.

Why all the corners this year?
People were reaching for them throughout the whole draft. I don’t know why.
Can you believe we still have four picks left?
Hopefully they’re good value-picks, if such a thing exists this late.

Chinedum Ndukwe?
Maybe we’ll get another guy like him.
I just have two many things against the Trent pick
1) There other positions (RB, G) that had better players on the board
2) If we were going to go CB i would have taken Mickens for a nickel back
3) He’s from FREAKIN Michigan!!!!
I am wondering who are the players below Morgan Trent on the draft board...
do they have all of their limbs? Did they actually play football, or are they tennis players with great football upsides? are they legally brain dead? Seriously, Morgan Trent is awful – I am wracking my brain to figure out who deserves to be drafted later than that guy…

Kory Sheets
I’m leaning towards Sheets for the late-round RB selection. Probably not a starter, but those are hard to find in the 7th round.
Hello Peeps..
The picks were going great! and then I see Morgan Trent….yikes!!!!!
I really expected we would have went running back by now, but gotta say I love the other picks. Huber was nice too…..and Michael Johnson is a physical freak if he wants to accept coaching, could be a hoss, I have seen him play a lot down here and his arms are always in the way of the QB’s line of sight.
James Davis a Brown
Guess we’ll see if he’s going to be effective the hard way. I had a good feeling about him. Now I hope I was wrong.
I remember when he was a stud as a freshman at clemson
his career there drastically fell short of expectations
Wow
did the patriots really just draft a long snapper in the 6th?
Yea, but
They always seem to know what they are doing…..scary huh.
Jake Ingram
I wonder about guys like this. A long snapper. Went to college in Hawaii, now he’s going to get paid ridiculous amounts of money to play in the NFL. As a long snapper. Is that a charmed life or what?
Then I looked at his bio and saw he was from Hawaii anyway, and started out as a defensive end. Guess he’s earning it after all.
Running Backs
Is Jennings the best one still available?
http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/blog/shutdown_corner/post/Character-is-still-not-a-huge-concern-for-the-Be?urn=nfl,159008#comments
Proper link to yahoo’s lol character issues lol blog, interesting it’s full of criticism so far.
Seems to me like they’re really reaching here. Admittedly it’s an easy mark when the Bengals use their first three picks on guys that have maturity/work ethic questions, but it’s not like these guys are Pacman Jones or Michael Vick. The knocks on Maualuga for partying sound pretty minor. Andre Smith sounds like a typical dumb kid, give him the summer to man up and he’ll probably be fine.
RE:
Some of the comments on this article, if you’d call it that, are pretty ignorant. People have such a bias against “character issues” and the Bengals, which is just dumb considering the lack of “issues” we’ve had compared to other NFL teams since 2006.
James Johnson is already a project, do we need another?
by 80%OFTHETIMEIMRIGHTEVERYTIME on Apr 26, 2009 5:27 PM EDT reply actions
I tend to agree. After Shonn Greene came off the board, my interest in RB went down pretty fast. I still hope to see Watson as the starter, but if that doesn’t happen all they have left are partial guys, very similar to what’s left in the draft. Guys that can probably get 3 yards and a cloud of dust, but never break open a big gain. Or scatbacks that can’t carry the ball much or get tough yardage. Etc.
I'm rooting for jennings
or guard if they think they have a project that could be a gem
Hopefully hes a good change of pace back
we need a speedster
lol
he has character issues;
Scott won the 2008 Harlon Hill Trophy in a landslide, getting the third-highest vote total in the 23-year history of the trophy. He had finished runner-up in the voting in 2007 to Danny Woodhead. In that year, Scott broke the league’s single-season rushing record with 2,165 yards and set a pair of NCAA Division II single-season records with 39 total touchdowns and 234 points scored.1
Scott’s NFL prospects are tarnished by his off-the-field issues. He was kicked off his high school team at Vernon because of an off-campus fight after his junior season. He also was dismissed from the Central Arkansas University team for hitting a coach, along with a few other issues. He’s also been arrested for some traffic-related misdemeanors, and he’s currently finishing out an 18-month probation for failing to identify himself during a traffic stop in Abilene in the spring of 2007
Poor Quon Cosby is still there
Erin describing him as a soon to be millionaire might only be if he’s bought a powerball ticket recently.
The good: NFL scouts will say Scott is not really fast, big or strong. But he is simply one of the most productive runners in college football history.
The bad: However, his checkered past may catch up with him. He was kicked off his high school team for being part of a fight off campus, dismissed from Central Arkansas for – among other things – hitting a coach and has had multiple additional run-ins with police.
Ok, forget what I said earlier. The yahoos on yahoo were right.
Well, I hope Chris Henry can take him under his wing....
errr…we’ll see what happens.

I expect somewhere between 3 and 5 of these picks to be starters by midseason. If that comes to pass, that’s a hell of a draft.
Likely:
Andre Smith
Jonathan Luigs
Fui Vakapuna
Kevin Huber
Possible:
Chase Coffman
Rey Maualuga
Situational player, won’t start but could play reliably in his specific situation:
Michael Johnson
Who?:
Morgan Trent
Bernard Scott
I’m happy with the draft, but they’ve got 7 RBs on the roster now, plus 4 FBs. If they cut Kenny Watson again I’m going to be pissed.

Says the right things for adoring Stoolers and Ravens fans to read. Best not to say anything bad about the “visionary” Browns as he’s being entertained in northern Ohio. Let’s question the Bengals draft choices, just to even things up.
No objectivity – and it’s been like this all last season as well. Bengals draft is solid all the way through with depth now at every spot. Coaches have really stepped it up to get the team ready for the opening game in September – a deadline they missed by one month last season.

I’ve got a really good feeling about Shipley. I think he’s going to be in the league a long time. Not confident enough to have been really hoping the Bengals would bypass all the top-tier guys, but pretty confident nevertheless.

generally speaking, yes. He doesn’t miss every time, though. He was lambasted for taking Nnamdi Asomugha the year after their last super bowl. He was expected to go in the 3rd, if I remember right, and they took him at 31. Now he’s considered one of the very best, if not THE very best, cover corner in the league.

I've had enough of Sanchez
He’s a one year wonder that wasn’t even considered a top five pick until a couple weeks ago. It’s WAY too early to declare him the “grand slam” pick of the draft.
Admittedly, the Jets got the trade very cheap, a 2nd round pick and 3 backups to move up 12 spots in the first round is an absolute steal, especially to get all the way up to #5, but I just don’t think Sanchez is worth the spot.
If you believe in that silly chart for pick values, as most teams seem to, then the difference between picks 5 and 17 is 750 points. The Jets gave the 52nd pick, worth 380 points, and three backups with little to no value. What gets me, aside from Sanchez being not worth a top-10 pick, is that the media acts like the Jets gave up too much.
I don’t have Sanchez down there with Grossman on the overrated, someone will deeply regret this pick chart, but he’s a lot closer to Grossman than he is to Carson Palmer.

From SI
BIOGRAPHY: Three-year starter awarded all-Conference honors as a senior after posting 39/7.5/7. Junior numbers included 55/9.5/4.
POSITIVES: Explosive gap penetrating defensive tackle who plays with great intensity. Possesses terrific first step quickness, plays with good pad level, and gets leverage on opponents. Pushes his way up the field, flashes power in his lower body, and stays with the action. Slides down the line to make plays on the ball carrier and rarely off his feet. Tenacious and goes hard until the whistle blows. Helps out on special teams.
NEGATIVES: Handled by a single blocker and can be driven off the line. Marginal skills as a pass rusher.
ANALYSIS: McDonald is strong for his size, yet he lacks the classic measurables to be a starter in the NFL. He possesses the athleticism and build to be used as a backup three technique lineman and should help out as a special teams player.
PROJECTION: Fifth/Sixth Round
CLinton McDonald?
Why in the hell did we draft the RB out of ACU with legal problems? Jennings is on the board, Ian Johnson is on the board. Uggh. I wish the Bengals had traded these picks rather than waste them on troublemakers and no-names.

Poor Chefs fans
I live in Chiefs country, and boy are the fans pissed. When Tony Gonzalez was traded for next year’s 2nd round pick, fans wanted to know why they’re looking long term. Pioli said trading Gonzalez was a great deal short term, because "The pick that is the 2010 pick right now is, as we sit here, could very well be a pick that’s a second round in 2010 but that pick, as you all know can be used in a lot of different ways and can somehow end up being a pick that’s used in the draft this year. So, in terms of us continuing to bring in players and build a roster with players it may be that pick will be the Falcons pick next year or it may be a different pick this year or several picks."
After all that hot air, the Chiefs still only had one pick on the first day. They didn’t do anything at all to turn the pick from Gonzalez into picks this year.
I was in heaven up to the punter and the criminal.

9. What’s going on with the Bengals? Cincinnati’s Day 2 drafting was as solid as its Day 1 selections. There were no reaches, no controversies and even a nice story. The Bengals earned good grades for first-day selections Andre Smith and Rey Maualuga. On the second day, they left themselves without much criticism after taking defensive end Michael Johnson, tight end Chase Coffman and center Jonathan Luigs, who might start. The good story was taking University of Cincinnati punter Kevin Huber, who learned of the selection while golfing. The secret to the success was the Senior Bowl, as the Bengals coached four of their draft choices in that game.
