Report: Bengals and Tank Johnson agree to a deal

The Cincinnati Bengals and Tank Johnson have reached a deal, writes Bengals.com. This gives Cincinnati five defensive tackles; with Johnson, we have Domata Peko, Jason Shirley, Pat Sims and Orien Harris.

This also likely means that the Bengals won't be drafting B.J. Raji in the 2009 NFL Draft -- why draft another defensive tackle when we picked up two last year, a free agent this year and extended another during the last off-season?

Personally, I'm fine with this pickup, adding depth to our defensive line.

(h/t cinbengal for being on top of the story)

I’M LOVING IT!!!!

Sure, this will create a media firestorm but hey, he hasn’t gotten into with the trouble since 2007. This is a great addition to our defense. We finally have a defensive tackle that can penetrate and pressure the QB. This will add another dimension to our defense.

I LOVE IT!!!!

Screw the media!! I don’t care!!

(However, it will be one thing if he got arrested months ago but nope… He’s a different person in my opinion)

Good football move....

may take a PR hit to some degree but the payoff is worth the risk.

Top ten

Zimmer is going to have the D in the top ten. I can not wait until they hold the Steelers to 10 points and 75 yards rushing!

Who do you suppose gets cuts now to fit this all in the salary cap?

I suspect

the venerable blogmaster John Thornton won’t be resigned. Incidentally, what position exactly does Jonathan Fanene play? Maybe him, too- though I don’t like losing Samoans and we may have to pick up that Tupuo guy or the BYU full back to erase that particular deficit.

Fanene’s contract was extended last season and they are expecting good things from him this year. As a run stuffer DE and pass-rushing DT. He is just still a little green in inside pass rush moves.

I knew they needed some more production on the line… and when all is said and done I think he’s more than worth the risk. If for no other reason than because now they have almost complete flexibility in the draft because no one position is such an emergency need that they have to take it at #6 no matter how much they don’t really like the player in question.

Trade down, anyone?

Love this move by the Bengals, and yes the media will use this to take a shot at the Bengals.

RE: Thornton

Do you guys think that Thornton may opt for retirement?

I’d almost rather he did than to see him go to another organization. I know it’s selfish but I’d like to see John involved in some other capacity with the team if he’s not going to play any more. Coaching, maybe, or talent evaluation/personnel?

totally agree. While he no longer has a place on the roster I think he can still help the organization.

LOVE THIS MOVE!!

This is the kind of move that the bengals front office never does. This upgrades the entire pass rush of our front 7. When Tank isn’t getting pressure on the QB himself he will be taking up two blockers allowing our DE’s and LB’s to rush the passer.

The hell with frank the tank, we have Tank the Tank
