Are we expecting too many players to break out?
Lets face it, the Bengals were 4-11-1 last season for a reason. They were a bad football team. I'm not going to get into the Carson Palmer effect. The Bengals are better with Carson Palmer thats for sure, but how much better? Expectations are high this time of year for every team in the NFL. Its no different for fans of Bengaldom. I keep hearing fans say well this guy is going to be better or this guy is in his 2nd season with the team. But for this team to have a better record than last year, a few players are going to have to answer those questions marks and have breakout seasons. i'm not even talking about the rookies. I'm looking at the players who have been on the roster for at least 1 season. Theres a lot of players that need to break out or come into their own for the Bengals to be a better team this season. Not all of them will step up, but lets hope most of them do. Heres a look at a few of the players that make the 09 Bengals full of potential.
Cedric Benson - He played so well in the last 3 games of the 08 season. Carson Palmer tells us to pick Benson in our fantasy leagues. While other "experts" say the bengals will regret signing him. Benson never reached his potential in Chicago, and now we hope he can do it Cincinnati.
Chris Henry - The guy has talent. The Bengals havent really been able to count on him, but Henry looks to be on the correct path. Again Palmer swears Henry will have a breakout season. but with the depth at WR and the return of Chad, how much can Henry actually "breakout"?
Andre Caldwell - Just about the same situation as Chris Henry. Sitting behind 2 established WRs. But Caldwell can play the Slot and Return Kicks. Caldwell will have to breakout this season as the main return man and the guy that must fill the shoes of T.J. in the slot.
Pat Sims - Sims will come into his 2nd year as a starter. So he should be automatically better right? I mean it is his 2nd season, and IF he breaks out, this Bengals defense could reach new heights.
Keith Rivers - All signs point to Rivers comming into his own and being that player the Bengals need. Fans will say Now we will have Keith for the entire season, that will make us better. Sure, as long as Rivers takes that next step. Brandon Johnson played well last season. Rivers needs to play better.
Jonathan Joseph - With the skills to be one of the better CBs in the league, Joseph hasn't broken out yet. But with the hopes of a improved pass rush, and Joseph being healthy an entire season. That right there should make him better right?
Chinedum Ndukwe - If this guy could play a full season, he could make the pro bowl. Ndukwe might be the only true play maker on the Bengals defense. If the Defense wants to take the next step, they need him to have his breakout season this year.
If all of these player come into their own and have the breakout seasons we all hope they do, then the Bengals will make the playoffs. But is this too much to ask? Can all of these players step up? Will all of them step up? Most likely they all wont breakout. But who dosnt love offseason hopes?

Good Post
I don’t think we really need all of these people to break out. We just need them all to stay healthy. If all (or most) of our starters were healthy last year our season would have been much better. Not saying we would have been in the SB or anything but probably something closer to the .500 seasons of the past few years. I don’t expect Benson to “break out”. I think with a good line, he will be a decent starter but nothing that will blow us away. Judging by his contract, MB and ML are estimating the same. Henry and Caldwell don’t need to break out per say either. With Ocho and Coles both starting, they just need to pull their weight as upper tier 3 and 4 receivers. Rivers, Joseph and Nduke have all shown what they can do on the field so if they just stay healthy, we will be looking great on D. I think Palmer will play with some fire after missing all last year and I can only hope the team stays healthy for a good run. Who Dey.

I have to agree…. but, if Henry and J-Jo and Ndukwe all DO “break out” we’re going to kick a LOT of butt…

Maybe "break out" isnt the right way to put it?
Are we expecting too many players to find their role? or contibute? or reach their potential?

Good Q
Hey FP, I liked your post.
To answer your question, no, I don’t think we are expecting too many players to have breakout seasons, because I don’t think that we need all of those players to bust out. Here’s who we do need though.
Cedric Benson – By “breakout” year here, I mean we need him to average 4+ yds/carry and have 1000 + total yards and 8 + TDs. We don’t need to put really high expectations on the guy, but without a decent run game, the offense becomes too one-dimensional to function.
The O-Line – Pretty self-explanatory. No line, no run, no Palmer and no offense.
Rivers – The guy set the bar pretty high before his injury last year, so in order to have a breakout year, he’s going to have to start hitting some people pretty hard. I want this guy to set a tone and really lay out some Steelers (or at least some Browns).
JJ – In the past our defense has lived on interceptions and creating havoc at the right times. Hopefully we won’t have to rely on that this year with a strengthened linebacker crew. However, we still need turnovers from Joseph if we expect to win football games.
As for all the other guys you listed, I think we can set the bar a little lower for them.
Henry and Caldwell – Henry is going to be a dangerous 3rd wideout, but if he doesn’t step up this year, then we know that there are talented WRs who are chomping at the bit to take his place. As for Caldwell, we need his as a decent kick returner (better than Chatman) and backup to Coles. The guy is blazing fast, so I expect that returning won’t be a problem.
I also want to frame your question a little bit differently, “Do we need this many guys to have breakout seasons to have a legit chance at a playoff birth?”

Rivers of the glass jaw.
Isn’t his goal to last the season and make some solo tackles??
Without him your D still ranked 12 last year.

There is something to be said about the intimidation factor though. It’s not that you want to hurt people, but a hard hitting defense causes players to think twice about catching balls over the middle. I think that you have to be half crazy to be a great defensemen (see Ray Lewis).
If Rivers gets a lot of tackles, it will make him a good player. If he gets a reputation for hitting people hard, it puts him at that next level.

The key isn't in any one individual Breaking Out.
The key is that they all are on the same page, contributing as parts of a whole.
As Carsonorbust mentions, O-Line. My god, O-line has to produce or we won’t break 8-8. If you want a break-out spotlight, aim it right here, probably from the Center to RIght Guard to Right Tackle. That’s right, Andre the Giant, I’m talkin bout you. Time to put away the Star Wars Action Figures and put some hurt on. Move people out of your way like they are between you and that third stack of flap-jacks.
Rivers was a freshman last go around, an although injured, I didn’t see any fire from him. Rivers will be made much better with Sting Ray in the D huddle. That guy’s motor is huge and we’ll see a leader emerge on this side of the ball. If he gets everyone fired up and most importantly motivates by example, watch out!
I do believe that we will have 4 great WR’s at our disposal as targets for Palmer. While I think Henry and Caldwell (get ready for every NFL announcer saying “whos that kid?”).
If you want my hope for a breakout player, it has to be with Chase. Great thing is, he doesn’t have to be spectacular this year to make a different, just have crazy glue digits. Catch every 3rd and 5 that comes your way Coffman. Make a couple of key blocks here and there. Be that option for the dump off pass during a blitz. We all know AFC North this year means 6.5 (giving Cleveland one half of solid D before they crumble) games of D pressure. Having an end that acts like a big reciever is going to do what the Choir Boy could not.
Overall, this year it’s going to be break out for the team to play as a team. All contributions welcome!

add on!
It’s early a.m. and I wanted to add…
…while Henry and Caldwall are going to be playmakers this year, it will be Henry that emerges as a star reciever. Slim will CATCH more deep balls than Ocho and Coles combined.

The real breakout needed
We need the team to breakout. By that I mean team unity. We have subtracted players who were problems here such as Levi and Andrews. IMO Chad, except for last year, adds spark and though he gives guys like Ghuachek (sp?) fodder for excuses he will thrive in a team with real unity. I see for the first time in a long time signs that this is beginning. TJ wasn’t public about his discontent but after leaving his true feelings came to the fore. Competition at so many positions is causing, from what I hear the hardest working off season in the ML era. The last ones standing will feel pride and confidence because they won out over not just ok players but good players. Roll all of the players into one unit and that one unit can be considered a breakout “person”. If the team can come together as a unit we do not need anyone to break out. Solid play at every position with everyone playing to their realistic potential than any one or two guys “breaking out”. Marvin had it right when he said “do your job”. If everyone does that and nobody tries to be a hero we have a chance to go far. If we don’t Henry can catch 14 TDs and go 1500 yards and we will still fall short. It isn’t how good your best players are – it is how bad your worst players are that matter. It is just like golf it isn’t hao good your good shots are – it is how bad your bad shots are that determine success.

What about Hall?
How many times did we see Leon being burned by receivers while he was 1-on-1 with them? Too many. I expect him to play better 1-on-1, and I also expect the coaches to NOT put him 1-on-1 so much. I don’t think he has “elite” talent based on what I’ve seen. We need him to brake out as much as any other player on this team.

WR's won't breakout
If Chad plays, he will want the ball.
I assume we didn’t give L Coles $7 mill to run decoy routes.
So i don’t see enough balls for C Henry and A Caldwell to “break out”.
Especially if they want to use the TE (Utech or Coffman) in the passing game, and throw to the FB (Fui?). Also, let’s not forget our over-drafted 2nd round pick Jerome Simpson who will look to outdo last year’s spectacular 1 catch performance. So i see the ball being spread out too much for Caldwell or Henry to have a chance to “break out”…..Unless we adopt the run and shoot, but skip the ‘run’ portion of it!!! :-)
.
I think all the other guys will “break out” solely on the assumption that they actually stay healthy. If they do that they will have broken out because they’ll outperform their previous years on IR….! :-)

breakout-vs improve
I think that in some positions, we are better off this year than we were last year at this time, whether the player has a “break-out” year or not. . Specifically with Caldwell at KR, Pat Sims starting at DT, Tank Johnson coming in to rush (no offense intended to John Thorton, he gave us 4 very professional years), Cedric Benson at RB, anyone at Center, and Rivers having a year in the Defense.

a Sims Breakout would be great if the other DTs don't breakout first
Henry did his breaking out in 06-07 for him to break out anymore he is going to have to crack the starting lineup.
Joseph is already solid in coverage I doubt he will ever be a turnover magnet. that is what Hall is for. JJ just needs to start 16 games and that is a breakout.
Ndukwe is one of the best hitters we have and can be dangerous on blitzes though I doubt there is a probowl spot for him this year. If he starts the whole season I feel he will do a 4 sack, 5 int, 90 tackle season. is that breaking out?
Rivers and Benson are the only ones on that list I feel we really need to have “breakout seasons”.
All the O-line needs to do to breakout is just not cave in like it has the past couple seasons.

You know who I think will break out...?
I don’t know if this counts, but I think that Antwan Odom will break out big this year. It sounds like the guy had a beastly offseason, and with the addition of Tank Johnson and others, he’ll get a heck of a lot less attention.
