I don’t see them keeping 4 TE’s. I also thing Cosby may get the nod over Chatman for the 6th WR spot and Dennis Roland will get the last OL spot over Crummey. The one to watch out for is Rucker or Blackstock. One will make it. One won’t.

Wow...we have no backup QB's... ;-(
I think Daniel Coats puts on his coat and is sent out the door. He’s a backup TE trying unsuccessfully to play FB. With 3 TE’s they aren’t going to keep a 4th. I think it’s a questions if they even keep 3 TE’s. Also, if they keep another guy to play FB I think it will be Johnson or Pressley.

JT O'Sullivan
I’m just curious about what people think about JT O’Sullivan. I thought he was a pretty decent backup to bring onto the squad. His numbers with the 49ers last year weren’t great, but they weren’t terrible either. He had a 73 passer rating threw for 1700 yards and eight TD’s through 8 games. He even had a 3 TD game against the Patriots. And he did all that without any decent receivers for most of the year. He was a little interception prone, but I think he could have been a 20 TD, 3400 yard guy if he had played the whole season.
This is our year!

I can't say i'm crazy about him....
but he is better than Jordie Palmer (I hope).
They guy had 17 turnovers in 8 games started last year.
He had 6 fumbles (2 lost) alone in his his last 2 games.
Yes, he had 3 TD’s vs. NE, but also had 3 INT’s which cost them an early lead. Also he completed less than 1/2 of his passes that game and only had 130 yards.
Yes, he was on a bad team. But was so bad himself that he got benched in favor of Shaun Hill of all people. Shaun Hill!!! And Shaun Hill went on to have a much better season on that same bad team.
His 1/2 season stats projected out to:
3356 yards, 16 TD, 22 INT
But if you factor that in the 1st 8 weeks he got to face Seattle twice (the worst pass defense in the NFL last season), and avoided facing Baltimore & Pittsburgh later in the season after he was benched, i’d downgrade his projected #’s down to something like 3100 yards, 14 TD, 24 INT.

Upgrade over Fitzpatrick?
I’m not convinced he’s going to be a great backup, his numbers were barely better than R.Fitz. (if at all). At least it appears as though JT can move the ball upfield a bit more (emphasis on a bit…). Fitz averaged a measley 5.1 yards per toss and 146.5 ypg…. thats tells me he was afraid to move the ball upfield. JT averaged 7.6 yards per toss and 186.4 ypg. While neither guy shows too much promise, I think I would take the more aggressive QB anyday. Honestly, I put as much stock in Jordan Palmer as I do them… at least he’s a Palmer

They signed Sullivan shortly after losing Fitz. Seems like I read the QB coach had worked with him previously. I think Losman has more talent, he’s still looking for work. But the coaches must think Sullivan is a better fit for their system. I agree with other posts that Coats won’t make it.I also think if Shirley has a decent camp he will stick because of his size. I haven’t seen much on McDonald.I wonder if they are going to try him at end or LB because of this size.

I have to think that Chapman is going to have to have a terrific camp to make it. If Cosby or Brown show any ability to return punts they traditionally keep youth over experience. Besides Chapman has spent too much time in the training room.

The thing with Shirley is… when i was watching the Minicamp Video on Bengals.com. they showed Shirley and Mike johnson going through lineman drills. And Shirley was doing pretty good keeping up with Johnson. And you could hear in the background players yelling “ok Big Shirley, you decided to show up today”. What does this tell you? I think Shirley may be playing a little bit lazy, and maybe gets shit for not practicing hard.
And if you watch the older Videos you see Cosby Not getting lined up correctly on some plays and the coaches talking to him in the huddle. If he cant play WR, Then he’s not better than Chatman. Scott and Caldwell are taking snaps at PR so if either of them can do it, then Cosby wont make the team.
And i went with 4 TEs because Coats just signed an extension this offseason, i think they see him as a replacement for Reggie Kelly eventually. Coats is too valuable on special teams, and he can play FB. Utecht has been hurt before, and Coffman is still recovering, even though he should be fine. Chase is raw for a pro style offense. I think Utecht has the best chance of getting cut out of all the TEs

I always had high hopes for Frostee Rucker, and I’m not ready to release him yet.
Don’t see how Kyries Hebert could beat out Marvin White, and another CB would be useful.

Hebert is a special teams ace. When you go in to the last one or two DB spots, a ST guy usually gets the nod.

There would be nothing interesting in cutting Watson.
Sorry, but his days are numbered in Cincy unless he turns into the Incredible Hulk or something. As of right now (to quote comic book guy from the Simpsons) “You couldn’t even turn into Bruce Banner.”

I like Kenny Watson
Not sure whose corn flakes he took a leak on…but after an incredible ‘07 season I found it odd that he didn’t even get a sniff last year at carrying more of the load. I know injuries played a role…but he eventually got healthy…but then they just turned to James Johnson (who?).
If you recall, the Redskins did the same sh-t to him after a solid showing.
Kenny Watson is the the Rodney Dangerfield of the NFL.
by JohnCockToastin on Jun 29, 2009 4:14 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I think Watson is as good as gone…and will get signed the very next day by another team after we cut him late in camp. For some reason the Bengals just don’t seem to like him enough to play him.
I guess these rosters all all speculation…because i don’t think everybody saw them cutting their best O-Lineman Willie Anderson and their top RB Rudi before last season.
I agree they take youth over production / experience…so Watson is gone…
In the same line of reasoning I wonder if that alone would get Rucker another year over Fanene?
I think Marvin White would survive over Lynch and maybe even HayBear?
by ephram on Jun 29, 2009 7:50 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Just my hunch...not scientific
HeyBear and Lynch are both either late round or FA acquisitions likely playing for the minimum and both have contributed heavily on special teams…and well on special teams.
Marvin White hasn’t done squat in his two years here except get beat badly on defense, miss a ton of tackles…and he’s not a solid special teams guy. If they only keep 4 or 5 safties (I can’t see them keeping 6 — no way), then I see Lynch or HeyBear making the cut over White.
Just a hunch though.

No way?
They kept 6 last season, and wiht the depth so much deeper at safety rather than CB. they will most likely do it again this year

I guess there's always a way...but
With 3 legitimate starters (Roy W., Ndukwe and Crocker — 2 whom collect pretty decent salaries) then 2 other special teams guys, I just don’t see it.
Keeping 6 last year was entirely different as they really didn’t have one solid starter at safety to begin with. (you could argue they had 2…but Ndukwe was a 7th round pick coming off his rookie year and DexterJ was out of gas — and hurt — and really was hardly a factor in ‘07) So…I would think that factored into them keeping 6. They had no idea who was going to play where, who would or wouldn’t pan out (White, Lynch, Hebert, Henana-Daze Jones)
Wouldn’t you agree that the depth at safety is night and day different than it was last year at this time?
by JohnCockToastin on Jul 1, 2009 12:01 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
yeah i agree
i agree because last year we had a ton of question marks, this year i feel like we know what we have in all 6 of these players. and now theres question marks at CB

Not enough!
I think this is a fairly accurate prediction… but i think they should add the number of spots on the roster. With this new artifical turf, it seems like people are getting more leg injuries. They should make it 60 players!

I agree about needing more but can’t blame it on the turf. How many guys did we lose on Pittsbugh’s mud pit of a field? The new stuff is also much better than the ole astro-turf days which was like playing in the parking lot. but I do agree with needing a few more rosterspots especialy if they increase the regular season games. How many times have we seen teams have to pick up guys off the street. That way we could keep guys on the bubble like Frosty or even bring Thorton back to be a back up / coach for the youg guys.
