Question

Hello Bengals fans. I'm an Eagles fan, but I got into talking with one of my friends, a Seahawks fan, and he said that the Seahawks will make the biggest jump this year from last year's record. I told him I doubt it because I wasn't really impressed with their off season moves too much (although they built for the present rather than the future. I guess I was just in a disagreeable mood). He told me to name one team that will make a bigger leap. I, not being one to back down on a challenge, fired off the Bengals and a couple of others (Chiefs, and Jags specifically). We decided to place a bet for $200, and I had to pick one team. I chose the orange and black. Now I could care if you think I'm right or wrong, analysts always crack me up with thier predictions because it is the same regurgitated crap that comes out of everone else's mouth. An injury here, a surprise break-out player there and boom! Then they start talking about how this and that and logically this team is set for a great run like they knew the whole time. The offseason drives me crazy honestly. That being said, I did pick the Bengals because I think they do actually have the best shot at turning thier ship around, regardless of what division who is in. But now I have a solid reason to cheer for the Bengals this year. Anyway, I came here to do a little research and saw you guys talking about "The God of the Golden Arms". Gotta ask, is that an Ochocinco thing, or did it just pop up on here?

The 'God of Golden Arms' is a Carson Palmer thing..

and if it’s all about our big guys up front, as nadffllictar has mentioned, then I would have bet on another team..

and I have no idea who came up with the saying, but its truth…

I know it's in reference to Carson

But who coined the term? It sounds like something that would come out of Chad’s mouth, or maybe him and this website were separated at birth?

Also have money on the line here

I bet a ’boys fan that the Bengals finish 8-8 or better this season. If they play solid on both sides of the ball, and some good special teams play, they should do better than .500.

Seahawks on the other hand have a LOT of changes. Start with the whole coaching staff, their first year working together from what I can tell. They lost a lot of good players as well. Plus, they have a pretty tough schedule for ’09.

They might be an overall better team this year, who knows? But I don’t think they will break even this year.

Exactly

Who knows? I made a bet that will end in 6 months. That’s less than $35 a month, but at the same time it gives me a reason to take on a 2nd team when the birds aren’t playing and another team to go against, although I already have plenty of them. One of the top ones is the Squeelers, thus adding to my excitement for those games.

The Smart money would be the Lions

you should have bet on the lions. One win and you get your money. haha

by voken99 on Jul 20, 2009 1:28 AM EDT reply actions

If it were that easy

Basically, the Seahawks won 4 games last year. This season, say they win 8. That’s +4 from last season. The Bengals would have to win 9 games for me to get the money. The Lions would have had to win 5 for me to get the money had I bet them. Hmmm, that’s the worst team in history going to a bad team. That probably would have been the smarter bet as the margin for error was still enormous. Good call. Too late now.

Don't bet on the Bengals

The only thing I will bet on them anymore is a guy movie/ chick flick contest between me and my girlfriend. No matter which way you bet, they always find a way to disappoint.

Here is my bet as it stands-

If the Bengals go 6-10 or worse, I have to watch both legally blonde movies and some movie from the 80’s that I have no idea what it is but I get the impression is one of the biggest chick flicks of all time.

If the Bengals go 7-9 or better, then she has to watch all 3 Matrix movies (which she hates). I may try to re-negotiate what movies she has to watch, just chose these cause I knew she could not stand them.

It's still a good season if we go 2-14 and beat the Steelers twice.

As someone said right away, the Bengals hopes this year all depend on the o-line. If they gel quickly and play well, I don’t think 10 wins is entirely out of the question. Most of the fans here are pumped up about the defense, but you have to admit their numbers were padded heavily the last couple games. Same only more extreme for Cedric Benson.

The passing attack should be fierce, if the o-line can at least give Carson time to throw and preferably protect his blindside as well. Carson is terrible about fumbling when someone hits him from behind.

The running game won’t scare anybody unless Watson gets a lot of carries.

The defense was ok last year, and in a couple games actually played extremely well. They won’t make big plays, but they’re generally pretty solid considering the position they were usually put in.

As for Seattle.. they’ve got a ridiculously easy division, but that may get a little tougher this year. TJ is a HUGE upgrade over what they had at receiver, and I like the new coach. There are probably too many personnel and coaching changes to expect anything really big out of them, though. Getting 9 or 10 wins, locking up their division, then getting knocked out in the first round of the playoffs is the best I would expect from them.

Detroit can’t get any worse, obviously.

The Chefs have a ways to go. Their o-line is terrible and the defense is even worse. I don’t expect much out of them.

The Jags should turn it around, but it remains to be seen whether their defense will ever be as fierce as they were under Smith or whatever is name is, the guy that took over in Atlanta. Their division is a beast. When the doormat is a perennial 8-8 team that has a knack for knocking off division rivals, that’s kinda scary compared to the cakewalk either West division has.

Schedules

Yeah, the division is easier. The Bengals play the AFC West and NFC North out of the division. The Seahawks, the NFC North (draw) and the “scary” AFC South.

Isn’t anyone reading this? I don’t care about opinions about my bet, I want to know who coined that term.

"The running game won’t scare anybody unless Watson gets a lot of carries."

I’m sorry, I couldn’t read that without falling out of my chair. I could see Troy Palumalu or Ray Lewis talking to their team beforer the game saying “we got this, we own them….unless Kenny Watson gets some carries, then we may need to rethink our game plan”. Let’s be serious. He’s a great guy to have on the team for utility purposes but actually scaring opposing defenses…not quite.

Also, on the Housh upgrade, I’m sure he will help them greatly on 3rd downs and redzone situations but when the sun sets he will be about as effective as the Deion Branch pick up a few years ago. They do have an easy division with hu-hum defenses but outside of some clutch short yard pick-ups and a few TD’s he’s not going to stretch the field or anything.

by smoormandiddy on Jul 21, 2009 8:14 AM EDT reply actions

with the patchwork quilt of barely-walking stiffs serving as the offensive line in 2007, Kenny Watson averaged 4.29 ypc. His career average is over 4.6, and he has never in his career had a season ypc average below 4.23. Benson’s ypc last year? 3.49. Benson’s BEST ever is 4.12, well below Watson’s worst.

Watson is 31, but he’s had less than 400 carries. He’s always been the guy that comes in when the starter is hurt and makes the starter look bad. Why he isn’t locked in as the starter is a mystery to me.
